At just 24, Christina Perri has already lived a handful of lives. She's toured the world as an assistant to a rock band, spent a year at a prestigious university, became a wife and then an ex-wife, produced popular music videos, made olive oil in Italy and even served as a fashionista barrista in Beverly Hills. The whole while, music had been tapping her on the shoulder, trying to lead her down a path as a musician. It seems that fate grew tired of this shoulder-tapping approach as well and went for an old fashioned sucker punch.
On June 30th, a raw, defiant break-up song that Perri had written called "Jar of Hearts" aired on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance as a backdrop to a memorable piece choreographed by Stacey Tookey. The song struck a chord with viewers, who began downloading it from iTunes in droves, sending "Jar of Hearts" into the Top 10 on the iTunes Pop chart and into the Top 15 on the Overall chart overnight. Impressed, SYTYCD's producers invited Perri to play the song live on the show two weeks later.
Following Perri's stripped-down piano performance on July 15th, "Jar of Hearts" continued its meteoric rise. After landing at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at No. 1 on Amazon's digital singles chart, the track sold 200,000 downloads in three weeks. Suddenly a hot property, Perri signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and is in the studio finishing up her debut album, with an eye toward a late fall release. She will also hit the road for a handful of shows in late September to perform with Jason Mraz, one of her all-time favorite artists.
Perri feels that "Jar of Hearts" has connected because, "on a basic level, everyone has had this experience with a person who broke their heart. I'm just telling my story in a very real and direct way. This kind of slapped the crap out of everyone's hearts," she says with a laugh.

Is adolescent pop supposed to be this clever? The Dallas-based Taylor Thrash sings radio-ready pop songs in a grown-up Nick Jonas voice, with nary a hint of hipster irony. Thrash’s heartfelt convictions in songs like the opening “Losing My Mind” help Step Forward bypass the guilty for the pleasure. “La La Love” moves on a skip-along beat with distorted electric guitars and Velcro-catchy hooks—but, again, what really makes this song come to life is Thrash laying his feelings on the line and singing his heart out. Even when he fails at making himself look like a bad boy (“What’s Her Name”), his attempt is endearing and should connect with anyone who's ever unsuccessfully tried to cover up heartbreak with a thinly veiled mean-mask. Thrash is much more successful when it comes to performing ballads. “Broken” reveals a man with an uncanny talent for creating those nearly whisper-sung serenades punctuated by piano and descending chord changes. As much as heartbreak proves to be a worthwhile muse, Thrash’s best moments (“Run into Me”) come when he’s fawning.

ZZ Ward didn t have to look far for inspiration on her second full-length album, 2017 s The Storm. For me, this album wasn t really about experimenting, she admits. It was more about simplicity, honing in on what I love about music and what makes me who I am as an artist. Growing up, I listened to a lot of hip-hop and blues, and I love those two genres so much. Sometimes, to evolve you don t need to go outside of yourself; you can reach further inside of yourself instead.
It s a realization earned over a whirlwind five years. The Fedora-rocking, guitar-shredding, harmonica-wielding blues siren peppered an old backporch musical recipe with hip-hop urgency and hashtaggable wisdom on her 2012 mixtape Eleven Roses. Followed by her full-length debut Til The Casket Drops yielded a veritable hit in the form of Put The Gun Down. The latter generated 7.4 million-plus Spotify streams and held strong in the Top 10 of AAA radio for 10 weeks as well as receiving over 100 high-profile licensing placements and syncs, including the feature film We re The Millers. Kendrick Lamar [ Cryin Wolf ] and Freddie Gibbs [ Criminal ] were quick to collaborate, while Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Elle, Interview Magazine, USA Today, NPR and more extolled her. Shortly after the release of 'Faith in the Future' in September 2015, Craig Finn got together with producer Josh Kaufman to talk about making another record. He had been writing a ton, and wanted to follow up quickly on the last album. He had been thinking about love and partnership in modern times, and had written a lot of songs about couples. Love seems like the biggest mystery in our modern days- no amount of science or advances in technology can help us fully understand the notion of love and the role it plays in our lives. But Finn also thought about the search for love as an antidote for loneliness, and how so often modern partnership can be an alignment of self interests. We make teams with each other to combat the world around us. There is a beauty in that for sure, but it also can fray around the edges. We lean against each other to keep ourselves upright, make uneasy truces, and push forward into uneasy times. The songs Finn had written dwelled on this. Finn and Kaufman started working in short sessions starting November 2015 and kept it going over the next year. As on ‘Faith in the Future’, percussionist Joe Russo and engineer Dan Goodwin were prominent parts of the sessions. They had developed a vocabulary and a style of working that felt comfortable- maybe like a band making their second or third record. That said, they also wanted create something different and new, so they invited a lot of other people to collaborate. They held a big session at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck NY in Spring 2016 that yielded most of the songs that made final cut, and finished by inviting friends and family to help with overdubs over the summer in Brooklyn. Before long they had a record that they loved, and Finn's most melodic album to date. They named this collection “We All Want The Same Things” after a line in the song “God in Chicago”. It seems like a bit of dark humor in these turbulent political times, but it also rings true: no matter our differences we all have some very basic wants and needs that line up with each other. The characters in these songs are normal people trying to help themselves, trying to move forward, and in some cases trying just to survive. All the while they are negotiating what space the others in their lives can occupy. Craig Finn will be on tour with Japandroids this February and March 2017 ahead of the album's release. The NY Times describes Finn as "a poetic storyteller and portraitist of people adrift and clawing their way forward in a depressed American landscape," and Noisey has called him, "one of America’s most perceptive and consistently rewarding contemporary songwriters.
