Shoegaze
Nowhere Douban Eggplant.place MusicBrainz
8.8 (114 ratings) Ride genre: shoegaze / Rock
publisher: Reprise Records
Nowhere seems to hold consensus as the second-best record of the shoegaze era, and with very good reason. All of the common words, phrases, and adjectives commonly used with the short-lived subgenre fit properly here, and they're all positive, every one of them. Whir, whoosh, haze, swirl, ad nauseum -- this record holds all of these elements at their most exciting and mastered. But in the end, great pop records necessitate quality songs, which Nowhere delivers throughout. Undeniably, it's Ride's zenith -- dense, tight, hypnotic. "Seagull" serves as a dynamic opener; after a couple seconds of light feedback, bassist Steve Queralt kicks in with a rubbery, elliptical line (reminiscent of a certain Beatles song), which is soon followed by Andy Bell and Mark Gardener's guitar twists and Loz Colbert's alternately gentle and punishing drumming. After the upbeat "Kaleidoscope," the record falls into a tempo lull that initially seems impenetrable and meandering. However, patience reveals a five-song suite of sorts, full of lovely instrumental passages that are punctuated with violent jabs of manic guitars. The endlessly escalating "Polar Bear" is a high point, featuring expertly placed tom rolls from Colbert. The tempo picks up for the closing "Vapour Trail," a wistful pop song with chiming background guitars galore and mournful strings to close it out. The U.S. version was bolstered significantly with the remainder of the Fall EP ("Dreams Burn Down" having reappeared earlier in the record). "Taste" is one of their finest pure pop numbers; the moody/driving "Here and Now" rates well, and the five-minute "Nowhere" is a nasty distorto-freakout. [Nowhere was remastered and reissued by Ignition U.K. in 2001. Added to the 11 tracks featured on Sire's U.S. edition are the four selections from the equally wondrous Today Forever.]

Monster Movie EP Douban
Monster Movie
release date 2007-07-16 publisher: Clairecords
Between March and September 2000, Monster Movie recorded five songs with Martin Nichols at the White House studio, the same producer and studio used for the first Eternal demo in 1989. The results are a shining accomplishment of impossibly catchy guitarpop, with hints of shoegaze (chugging fuzz bass and swirling, effects-laden guitar work), dronepop (witness "Rovaniemi" with it's layers-upon-layers of effects, keyboard drones, guitar feedback.) and overall just a fantastic sense of pop melody. Monster Movie's songcrafting will make these tunes a permanent fixture in your memory bank. Christian's vocals ride atop with confidence, while the backing vocals of guest Louise Hewson provide the ultimate perfect touch.
The Age Of Lovely, Intimate Things Douban
Sciflyer genre: Rock
release date 2005-11-14 publisher: Clairecords
...Intimate Things" These tracks bring together the best of all angles that influence Sciflyer - brilliant 80's jangle pop a la House of Love or early REM, 60's pop melody, and of course that incredible dreampop/shoegaze sound of the early 90's. extended blast of pop-psych as filtered thru that sound that only Sciflyer can produce. Recorded with Ron Guensche (Reclinerland, Sharron Kraus, Above the Orange Trees; also recorded Stratford 4). One that starts out truly fantastic from the very first listen, and just keeps getting better with each successive spin, "...Lovely, Intimate Things" is definitely the pinnacle of Sciflyer's career to date. For fans of Swervedriver, early REM, early House of Love

Not Here Not Now Douban
Malory genre: Rock
release date 2006-11-14 publisher: Clairecords
"Swirling and enchanting dreampop curls around your heart like little fingers, as warm as rose petal hugs." - BIG TAKEOVER Malory crafts beautiful, blissful sonic sound with brilliant sheets of effected guitars, drawing comparisons to the unmistakable gorgeous guitar work of Slowdive. Their monumental orchestral-shoegaze opuses and ethereal vocals have also been compared to Lush, Spiritualized, My Bloody Valentine, Curve, and Chapterhouse. Late in the year 2000, Clairecords got a hold of one of the most incredible debuts they had ever heard by German band Malory. They imported the disc from Germany through Clairecords Mailorder Direct, and it remains one of their best sellers to date. In fact, they helped put the album into the sad-but-impressive out-of-print status it has retained for the past several years. Clairecords' reissue of Not Here, Not Now includes previously-unreleased bonus track "Worry About Something," plus an extra hidden bonus track!

release date 2012-05-07 publisher: Sony CMG
The announced reissues of “Isn’t Anything” (Creation, 1988) and “Loveless” (Creation, 1991), newly mixed by Kevin Shields, will have to wait. However, it's not all bad news for the My Bloody Valentine fans: they can mark 7th May on their calendars as the day when Sony will release “EP’s 1988-1991”. No tracklist is available as of yet, but it looks like the compilation will feature “You Made Me Realise” (1988), “Feed Me With Your Kiss” (1988), “Glider” (1990) and “Tremolo” (1991), the four EPs the Irish band released in their heyday. As soon as we hear more on this, we'll let you know.
She Beats Douban
Beaches genre: Rock
release date 2013-05-21 publisher: Chapter Music
Sprawling Melbourne psych-rock five-piece Beaches return with second album She Beats. Their self-titled debut emerged on Mistletone Records in 2008, making the Australian Music Prize shortlist for that year and featuring in 2010 book 100 Best Australian Albums. In the intervening years, the band have toured the U.S. twice, played All Tomorrow's Parties at the invitation of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, released an EP for NYC label Mexican Summer, and shared stages with the likes of Roky Erickson, Deerhunter, and Wooden Shjips. For She Beats, Beaches have once again joined forces with producer Jack Farley (Twerps, Scott & Charlene's Wedding). And like its predecessor, the album reflects a love for '60s pop, '70s psych, shoe-gaze, prog, southern boogie and Krautrock. But She Beats is bigger, bolder and more ambitious than the debut. For one thing, German guitar icon Michael Rother of Neu!/Harmonia features on two tracks. The band formed a bond with Rother at ATP in Melbourne in 2009, and he invited himself along to their recording sessions during his next Oz tour in 2012. One of these tracks, the cascading sonic swirl "Distance," was premiered on Gorilla vs. Bear and racked up 15k Soundcloud plays within a week. Elsewhere, "Veda" sees the band extending hypnotically eastward, while droning cello scrapes introduce "Tanzanite." On the other end of the spectrum, tracks like "Send Them Away," "Out of Mind," and "Runaway" are upfront, glorious pop, though still heady with Beaches' dreamy guitar heroics. All up, She Beats is rich, confident and layered, a multi-dimensional sonic world to get lost in over and over again. Beaches are Antonia Sellbach (guitar/vocals), Alison Bolger (guitar/vocals), Ali McCann (guitar/vocals), Gill Tucker (bass/vocals), and Karla Way (drums/vocals).
