Comprising three centuries of noted composers' "minor" works, Lubimov's Der Bote (The Messenger) bears out its title with short, introspective pieces that capture thoughts of nostalgia, mourning, and meditation. The first work, C.P.E. Bach's 1787 Fantasy, sounds amazingly avant-garde, full of surprising darts and turns. And the experimental 20th-century composer John Cage's "In a Landscape" is an even bigger surprise. Instead of random keyboard plink-plunks, it's a diaphanous Debussyan tone poem, bound to startle party guests playing Name That Composer.
Liszt's otherworldly "Abschied," Glinka's achingly beautiful Nocturne "La Separation," and Bartók's bleak "Vier Klagelieder" (Four Dirges) are highlights, but so are virtually all the other selections--especially Lubimov's moving interpretation of Chopin's neglected Prelude op. 45. Valentin Silvestrov is represented by his stark Elegie, and the fascinating "Der Bote," which vainly attempts to recall the lost world of classicism through Mozart quotations that fragment into shards. This is a concept album that works, each short gem casting refracted light on the others. Despite the New Age implications of an album of short, contemplative music, there's solid substance and stunning pianism here. --Dan Davis

Metamorphosis was written in 1988 and takes its title from a play based on Kafka's short story. Numbers three and four are from Glass's incidental music to the play. Numbers one and two use themes from Glass's soundtrack to the acclaimed Errol Morris film The Thin Blue Line. Mad Rush was written for the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first public address in New York City, in the fall of 1981. Originally an open-structured or open-ended piece, it was first performed by Glass on organ during the Dalai Lama's entrance into the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Wichita Vortex Sutra is the result of a chance meeting between two long-time friends, Glass and poet Allen Ginsberg, in St. Mark's Books, a popular bookstore in the East Village.

Miles Davis thought so much of him, he included him on the sessions for his immortal Kind Of Blue album. You Must Believe In Spring, a trio recording cut late in Evans' career, features gorgeous playing and stunning production. Ludovico Einaudi is back with a new project, Seven Days Walking: seven releases spanning seven months, featuring a new combination of piano/cello/violin but with a return to his trademark sound that has made him one of the most important and relevant composers today.
The project takes the idea of the same walk done over seven days, but each day the experience is different due to a variety of factors – the weather, the season, the walker's mood, the appearance of different wildlife, a new observation within the landscape and so on.
The first instalment, Seven Days Walking (Day 1), is significant as it establishes the project theme. The subsequent six variations on this theme (Seven Days Walking Days 2 to 7) will be released later this year and will feature stunning cello and violin arrangements, apart from Day 7 which is solely piano. This is essential Einaudi listening.

Award-winning Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds has premiered the first song from his new album 'The Chopin Project' - a collaboration with German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott - on The Line Of Best Fit.

The track is titled 'Verses', and gives us a taste of what is to come on March 16th, when the album in full will be released.

Arnalds utilised vintage equipment and techniques to create this stunning, melancholy new reimagining of Chopin's work.

"Verses is a new composition by me which uses the famous right hand motif from Piano Sonata No3 (Largo) and is followed by that part of that Sonata in its original version played on the piano by Alice," Arnalds explained to Line Of Best Fit. "So you hear the motif first recomposed arranged for a string quartet and then just a couple of minutes you will hear it in it's original state played on the piano.

"With this I wanted to show listeners quite clearly what I was doing with 'Verses', which they might not realise is composed around a motif from the sonata unless they hear the original sonata next to it."
