2006 sophomore release from this electronic, arty and atmospheric Post Punk-influenced band from Brooklyn. Features guest appearances from David Bowie and labelmates Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead) and Katrina Ford (Celebration). Hezekiah Says You're A-Ok, the debut album from Philadelphia songwriter vehicle Hezekiah Jones, is a record both nuanced and swayingly graceful. Falling somewhere in the realm between early Leonard Cohen and Will Oldham's Bonnie 'Prince' Billy recordings, Hezekiah Jones has crafted an album of tightly coiled harmonies, memorable lyrical melodies, and nimble, literate songwriting.
Raphael opens the album with the hypnotic Agnes of the World, setting the stage for a record populated with songs crafted like messages in bottles, tossed over the deck by a lone sailor on a rickety ship. The messages at first are sweet love letters, a little melancholy and a little homesick, but as the album progresses the ship turns a bit askew as the songs take on a slightly cracked logic and the wide-eyed air of 4 AM sleep deprivation.
The transition brings to mind the nervous eclecticism of the Beatles' White Album, only with a hazy delivery as if it were recorded by modern folk luminaries Hayden or Iron & Wine. Albert Hash, replete with distorted harmonica and gorgeous soaring harmony vocals, paints a figure akin to some of Lennon's fragmented character studies, while songs like Postpone channel that lush, acoustic beauty reminiscient of McCartney's contributions. In this context, the screen-door soundscape and prominent use of the slide whistle on Writing Letters in the Morning, or the kazoo chorus and Tom Waits junkyard clang of Hildebrand nestle themselves next to the summer hammock sentiment of Nothing's Bound and the tempered, bittersweet How You Feel About Traveling in a surprisingly cohesive, complementary fashion.
It's an album that is both easy to fall in love with and difficult to really nail down where it's coming from, comfortable but unexpected, unabashedly beautiful and languidly unnerving. I've never heard anything quite like it, and we here at Yer Bird are thrilled to bring it to you. I do hope you'll enjoy it.

MOTORO FAAM is hailed from Kanagawa, Japan and is an act made by three 23 years old musicians. Mizukami Ryuta takes care of the electronic side of this unique project (samples and programming) while Kobara Daisuke (violin) and Kato Ayumi (piano) both classical educate have a main input in the musical part. MOTORO FAAM brings a perfect blending of weird electronica with beautiful played violin and piano. The general sound can be described as Murcof or Donato Wharton in a very experimental state of mind. U-cover is pleased to have this act on their roster and a follow up release on the new U-cover transparente label is already planned for this year. With Fragments these three Japanese youngsters brings their European debut, seven tracks full of emotions, strange sounds and touching melodies. MOTORO FAAM is an act with some great future and Fragments can be seen as a big musical statement.

Accomplished at the end of some little panel of eternity, Orval Carlos Sibelius&#146; first self-titled record is a joke, and such for quite a number of reason. First and foremost, because this miraculous debut album is not really a debut album &#150; Axel, who hides himself behind this mysterious alias, as if it didn&#146;t really matter, used to electrify the hearts of the French underground a few years ago, using the Snark moniker.

Going up and against the streams of our time, Axel records on a plastic recorder, he likes to stretch his recording sessions over time (between the first brick and the last piece of tile, this one album took 5 years in the making), and he loves progressive rock. He is an eager musicophage, who belongs to that little group of people who likes to spend time deciphering the mathematic melancholy of Robert Wyatt (and also belongs to that even smaller group of those who actually know what the latter is about), the eager passion for the raw gold of ELO, early Yes or Genesis material, the tempi craze of math rock. Constant interferer of line spaces, he also likes to fill up his sweet and complex, songs, foliated with unexpected surprises of truncated bars, with non-western clutter, resonances of weird strings and sun lit bazaar. And he always stands, hand in hand, next to his unblinking doppelganger, the actual Orval Carlos. Superb and cool-headed, virtuoso, amazing lover, he is his permanent skyline, his musicianship ideal, his dream of a composer, dream of a musician; he is also the one to which he can attribute the words "I wanted to revisit the melancholic harmonies of the old masterpieces of Yes or Genesis, which have deeply marked me when I was a teenager".

Jimmy LaValle's varied experience includes stints with Tristeza, The Locust, GoGoGo Airheart, The Blackheart Procession, and Sigur Ros. "Into The Blue Again" sees LaValle handling the bulk of the vocal and instrumental duties. After tracking, he took the concentric billows of feathered keyboards, filmy strings, and chiseled drums to Iceland for three weeks of mixing to tape to maintain Brian Eno-informed translucence. Having shared so much time and space with others on the road, LaValle proves, with this personally charged release, that The Album Leaf resonates most profoundly when he goes it alone.

This marks Mac McCaughan's second foray (following 2001's "Looking For Leonard") into soundtrack work in the guise of his musical alter ego, Portastatic. Inspired by film music from composers such as Henry Mancini, Ry Cooder, Francis Lai, and Piero Umiliani, Portastatic's score is a beautiful musical interpretation of the themes of the people we love and how much we hate them, sex, and the ensuing tensions that can arise within the confines of friendship and the extended family. In addition to Mac's traditional guitar-based songs, he incorporates strings, oboe, flute, and piano to propel the infectious melodies. Fans of Belle Orchestre, Rachel's, and Calexico will enjoy this score. The film stars Lukas Haas and Molly Parker.

Philadelphia's Bardo Pond return in June 2006 with Ticket Crystals -- their sixth studio album and second for ATP Recordings. Completing a trilogy of work -- first embarked on with 2001's Dilate and centred with 2003's On the Ellipse -- Ticket Crystals resumes the quintet's signature doom tempo, multi-layered drones; while introducing a lighter pastoral, even Tudor-like feel, which rallies throughout against the band's youthful riff petulance. Guitarist and founder member, Michael Gibbons, elaborates: 'On The Ellipse was really influenced by the post 9/11 vibe, this one is the coming out of that... On this album we really investigated the dynamics between acoustic sound and heavy electrics.' Recorded over two years at the band's home studio, a handful of the tracks first came to light on Bardo Pond's 2003 live UK dates alongside kindred spirits and former label mates, Mogwai. 'Yeah, most of the time we go out on the road before we record to get comfortable with the tracks,' remarks Gibbons. Fans of the space rock pioneers may already be familiar with much of the new material owing to the band's well-publicised endorsement of bootleg recordings. Tracking down the elusive balance between extensive improvisation and acutely structured arrangements, Bardo Pond's latest long-player, Ticket Crystals, includes the spellbinding 'Moonshine' (a ten-minute plus ethereal expedition that immediately recalls the acoustic intricacy of Led Zeppelin III coupled with the contemporary quirkiness of Coco Rosie) and live favourite and album opener, 'Destroying Angel,' which only just manages to contain the sheer force of the brothers Gibbons amplification and vocalist and flautist Isobel Sollenberger's haunting and occasionally terrifying tones. Also featured on the album is the band's unique reworking of The Beatles' White Album classic, 'Cry Baby Cry,' which was originally recorded for and broadcast by the BBC as part of their commemorations of the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death.
