Justin Vernon began recording as Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings and, to a certain extent, Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Pronounced 'bohn eevair', it is French for "good winter" which is spelled wrong deliberately. This debut CD is centered around Justin Vernon, who is the primary force behind Bon Iver, as he moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. Her fiery red and yellow photo-manipulated hair and bandaged finger stand in stark contrast to the orderly mysticism conveyed on the front of her previous release, DAYS OF OPEN HAND. Producer MitchellFroom surrounds her strong songs with surprises in instrumentation, arrangement, and mix. The set opens smartly with a couple of selections that stand in stark contrast to the more traditional folk bearing of her previous output. For new album, Vernon brought in sidemen such as pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and sax virtuoso Colin Stetson, who has backed Arcade Fire, Beirut and Tom Waits. Bon Iver’s new album will have 10 tracks, each inspired by a different place. Perth, named after the Australian city, is a “Civil War-sounding heavy metal song” with martial drums, choir and “wailing guitars”. Minnesota Wisconsin lays Stetson’s bass saxophone over Vernon’s finger-picked guitar, and the album closer, Beth/Rest, is “definitely the part where you pick up your joint and relight it”.

Ragged Wood is unassuming roots-rock recorded in the Sub Pop way. Now that Band of Horses can be found in car commercials, Sub Pop is prepping the next licensing bonanza. There's something more traditional, and purportedly authentic, about Ragged Wood, which is a nicer way of saying that the songs are less gripping than Everything All the Time. When they're not sounding like Band of Horses, the vocal and songwriting approach would fit wonderfully on the interminable second half of It Still Moves, where absolutely nothing grabs your attention. This seems like one of the few times that an independent label has pigeon-holed a band's sound. On the flip side, this album will be a precursor to financial success for the band. For many, this is a niche of music that's only now pouring itself into mainstream. For me (and probably most of the RYM community), there's just so far where this sound can go in the 00s, and it was done already over the past few years.
