浪漫一生的商人亨利（Don Ameche 饰）去世了，面对西服革履的地狱审断人，亨利悠悠然讲述起了自己一生的故事：亨利出生在富有之家，在吵闹跟呆板的亲人们中间，唯有性格豁达幽默的爷爷与自己相投。相对那位同富商千金订婚的表哥，亨利更热衷于那些在大街上不期然的浪漫偶遇。在表哥订婚的聚会上，亨利惊见未来的表嫂居然是自己曾搭讪过的美丽姑娘玛莎（Gene Tierney 饰），亨利在众目睽睽之下把玛莎抱走，也将一次浪漫爱情紧紧攥入手中。亨利与玛莎的婚姻在甜蜜的主调中偶而也有因误会产生的分离，但岁月给他们的，只有愈发浓烈稳固的爱意。不知不觉中，儿子渐渐长大成人，老去的亨利在儿子身上看到了自己不时浮现的曾经……
