李善兰，字壬叔，号秋纫，浙江海宁人，从小喜爱数学，“方年十龄，读书家塾，架上有古九章，窃取阅之，以为可不学而能，从此遂好算”，“三十后，所造渐深”。1852年到上海参加西方数学、天文学等科学著作的翻译工作，8年间译书80多卷。1860年以后在徐有壬、曾国藩手下充任幕僚。1868年到北京任同文馆天文学算馆总教习，直至病故。李善兰的数学研究成果集中地体现在他自己编辑刊刻的《则古昔斋算学》之中，里面包括有他的数学著作13种。其中《方圆阐幽》、《弧矢启秘》、《对数深源》3种，是关于幂级数展开式方面的研究。李善兰创造了一种“尖锥术”，即用尖锥的面积来表示Xn”，用求诸尖锥之和的方法来解决各种数学问题。虽然他在创造“尖锥术”的时候还没有接触微积分，但已经实际上得出了有关定积分公式。李善兰还曾把“尖锥术”用于对数函数的幂级数展开。
