▲本书中的衡阳保卫战《47天》是衡阳保卫战中国守军第10军战事记，由笔者和卢华磊根据《原国民党将领抗日战争亲历记：湖南四大会战》（全国政协《湖南会战》编写组编，中国文史出版社，1995年）、《衡阳抗战铸名城》（政协衡阳市委员会编，中国文史出版社，2005年）收编的原第10军官兵回忆文章整理编辑，内容包括各部队各阵地的战况，可以作为了解当时战场全貌的背景参考。“战事记”按部队、其防守阵地、发生时间为序编排。从按时间顺序的战事中可以看出，在抵抗日军47天从无间断的攻击中，守军防卫阵地不断缩小，各师部队由分别守备不同阵地，到互相调防，动用预备部队，补充非战斗兵员，到最后，打通编制、整合剩余兵力，做拼死抵抗的过程。
《47天》最后部分，列了数十位第10军官兵亲历回忆中有关他们被俘囚禁期间的情况，以及逃离的经过，虽然有些事情没有具体的日期，但是发生的时期是确定的。
从他们逃离的经过来看，衡阳城外到处都是日军部队，数量很大。他们三三两两，乘黑夜，走小道，经当地人带路，才侥幸穿过了密集的包围圈。
每个人的逃生经过也都很独特，可作为了解当年战时中国社会情况的参考，对了解当时局势下日军发生的变化，包括对待中国俘虏的态度，以及其战场行为、心理等也极具参考价值。
▲蒋鸿熙原为第10军军部参谋，主动要求上前线，衡阳保卫战开始时，任预10师30团2营5连连长，该师负责驻守衡阳城南主阵地。在防守日军第二次全面总攻时，蒋鸿熙带伤作战，战场立功，被晋升为30团3营营长。日军的两次全面总攻被击退后，预10师伤亡达90%，蒋鸿熙本人第三次负伤，因伤势严重，被送往野战医院。
衡阳失陷时，他腿部重伤，行动困难，和其他伤兵一起沦为战俘。同年11月末，在当地政府、游击队、老百姓帮助下，与几名战友逃出俘虏营，拖着伤腿，蹍转于湖南、广东、江西三省各地，以逃避日军的追杀。其间，腿伤几经手术，不得治愈。最后经一医术高明的广东籍军医袁毓万治疗，终于1945年9月末伤口愈合，结束了14个月的病榻生活。此时，战争已经结束。
蒋鸿熙康复后，即开始整理、记录衡阳保卫战的经历，用他本人的话来说：“为得要纪念我的长官、同事，尤其我那些忠贞的勇敢的子弟般使我永远不能忘怀的部下。我怎能不留点逼真的痕迹，做追悼的资料呢？”
