Work, Consumerism and the New Poor 豆瓣 Goodreads
Work, Consumerism and the New Poor (Issues in Society)
作者: Zygmunt Bauman Open University Press 2004 - 9
Reviewers' comments on the first edition: 'Zygmunt Bauman presents a cogently argued and compelling thesis...an important book from a distinguished scholar, that adds a new dimension to the poverty debate' - "British Journal of Sociology". 'It will be of great interest and value to students, teachers and researchers in sociology and social policy! [Bauman] provides a very forceful and sophisticated statement of the case; and a very well written one too. As a wide ranging analysis of our present discontents it is an admirable example of the sort of challenge which sociology at its best can offer to us and our fellow citizens to re-assess and re-think our current social arrangements' - "Work, Employment and Society". 'This is a stylish and persuasive analysis of the transition between the age of the 'society of producers' to that of the 'society of consumers" - Political Studies. It is one thing to be poor in a society of producers and universal employment; it is quite a different thing to be poor in a society of consumers, in which life projects are built around consumer choices rather than on work, professional skills or jobs. Where 'being poor' was once linked to being unemployed, today it draws its meaning primarily from the plight of a flawed consumer. This has a significant effect on the way living in poverty is experienced and on the prospects for redeeming its misery. "Work, Consumerism and the New Poor" traces this change over the duration of modern history. It makes an inventory of its social consequences, and considers how effective different ways of fighting poverty and relieving its hardships are.The new edition of this seminal work features: updated coverage of key thinkers in the field; discussion of recent work on redundancy, disposability and exclusion; and, current thinking on the effects of capital flows on different countries and the changes on the shop floor through, for example, business process re-engineering; and, new material on security and vulnerability. It is a key reading for students and lecturers in sociology, politics and social policy, and those with an interest in contemporary social issues.

钻石、黄金与战争:英国人,布尔人和南非的诞生
作者: Martin Meredith Simon&Schuster 2007
De nieuwe wereld van Peter Stuyvesant 豆瓣
作者: Lucas Ligtenberg Querido Fosfo 2013 - 3

Dutch South Africa 豆瓣
作者: St. John Hunt Matador 2005 - 8
This book provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the first Dutch settlers in Table Bay and is packed full of photographs and illustrations. The diaries of Jan van Riebeeck, the first governor of the new Dutch colony at Table Bay in South Africa, document the struggle to survive in a new environment. Whether repelling attacks from wild animals, bartering with the indigenous tribes, or importing slaves to manage their crops, the diaries provide a valuable historical insight into the harsh reality of settling new colonies. The diaries also detail the success of new skills brought to the community by Malays and the influx of Huguenot refugees in 1685 and finally the misfortunes that eventually brought Dutch rule to an end. In 1652, the first Dutch settlers arrived on the shores of Table Bay, having survived the hazardous journey from the Netherlands. The site, which later became known as Cape Town, had a climate in which European crops could flourish. It was here that Jan van Riebeeck was instructed by the Dutch East Indies company to found a new community. He documented the details in his diary for posterity.
The Jakarta Method Goodreads 豆瓣
作者: Vincent Bevins PublicAffairs 2020 - 5
The hidden story of the wanton slaughter -- in Indonesia, Latin America, and around the world -- backed by the United States.
In 1965, the U.S. government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the twentieth century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.
In this bold and comprehensive new history, Vincent Bevins builds on his incisive reporting for the Washington Post, using recently declassified documents, archival research and eye-witness testimony collected across twelve countries to reveal a shocking legacy that spans the globe. For decades, it's been believed that parts of the developing world passed peacefully into the U.S.-led capitalist system. The Jakarta Method demonstrates that the brutal extermination of unarmed leftists was a fundamental part of Washington's final triumph in the Cold War.
Liftoff 豆瓣
作者: Eric Berger William Morrow 2021 - 3
Review
"Liftoff reads like something out of the golden age of Science Fiction but this isn't a novel by Robert Heinlein or Arthur C. Clarke. This is the true, astounding story of the men and women who spun those sci-fi dreams into reality. This is as important a book on space as has ever been written and it's a riveting page-turner, too! -- HOMER HICKAM, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Rocket Boys
“This might be the best space book I've ever read. Liftoff will prove to be a defining story not only for the commercial space industry, but for the Space Age writ large, and there's no one better than Eric Berger to tell it.” -- KELLIE GERARDI, author of Not Necessarily Rocket Science
“Eric Berger brings to life the passion and sacrifice of the early SpaceX team as they navigated through countless obstacles toward unlikely success. The skillfully described technical details, paired with a candid glimpse into individual personalities, makes Liftoff a must read for space enthusiasts and novices alike.” -- KAREN NYBERG, NASA Astronaut
"[Berger] depicts race-against-the-clock crises as fast-paced as a thriller, with moments reminiscent of Apollo 13 or The Martian. ... An exciting and insightful read." -- Booklist
"The elegant brilliance of the engineering that allows today’s space rockets to land themselves back on earth—or at sea—right way up, and on target to the inch, is all the doing of the teams assembled by Elon Musk—and the story of how he did it, and how for sure he will get us to Mars whether we like it or not, is told in appropriately stellar fashion by Eric Berger in a book that held me captive, in earth orbit, from prologue to epilogue, countdown to splashdown." -- SIMON WINCHESTER, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Perfectionists
“Eric Berger has followed the exploits of SpaceX and its founder, Elon Musk, from its very early days. In Liftoff, Eric relates the many personal accounts collected in one-on-one interviews with Musk and many of his key leaders and associates. He chronicles the frenetic pace of Falcon 1 development and the toll it took on many of the early employees. This is a book that will hold your rapt attention from start to finish.” -- CHARLES BOLDEN, Former NASA Administrator and Four-Time Astronaut
