Emotions is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released on September 17, 1991 by Columbia Records. The album deviated from the formula of Carey's 1990 self-titled debut album, as she had more creative control over the material she produced and recorded. Charmbracelet is the ninth studio album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on December 3, 2002 by Island Records. It was her first album on the label and was also her first following the release of her film Glitter (2001) and its accompanying soundtrack album Glitter, both of which were critical and commercial disappointments. Sales of Charmbracelet were an improvement over those of Glitter, and the album went platinum in the United States. The album was unable to garner any U.S. hits, as none of its singles made the top 80 of the Billboard Hot 100. She once again collaborated with many artists on this album such as rappers Cam'ron, Jay-Z, Freeway, Westside Connection and R&B artists Kelly Price and Joe. To date, Charmbracelet has sold over 4 million copies worldwide.
The first single from Charmbracelet, "Through the Rain", only peaked at number 81 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, but it was more successful in Canada and the UK where it reached the top ten. It also hit number 1 on the U.S. sales and dance charts. In association with the album's release, Carey was the subject of an MTV special, Shining Through the Rain.
The album debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 with 241,200 copies sold in its first week, just behind Tim McGraw's Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors which held the number two spot in a second consecutive week after selling over 250,000 copies, and Up! by Shania Twain which held the top spot for the third consecutive weeks with 317,000 copies sold.[3] Charmbracelet remained in the top twenty for just three weeks and on the chart for twenty-three. Carey's tour in support of the album, the Charmbracelet World Tour: An Intimate Evening with Mariah Carey, was the biggest tour of her career, lasting over eight months with more than sixty shows across many countries. During the tour, "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" was issued as the third single. The album was re-released in Asia and Europe to support the concert tour under the title Charmbracelet: Limited Edition with four bonus, unreleased tracks and videos for "Through the Rain" and "Boy (I Need You)".

Rainbow is the seventh studio album by American R&B singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on November 2, 1999 by Columbia Records. Rainbow has been certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. Rainbow was Carey's last album released by Sony/Columbia Records.
Rainbow is a collaboration-heavy album on which Carey worked with a wide range of producers and artists that dominated the music scene of the late 1990s; Rolling Stone called the album "a sterling chronicle of accessible hip-hop balladeering at the close of 1999." Carey herself said of the album "I made it in three months, like "Get me off this label!" I couldn't take it." Guest artists included rappers Jay-Z, Da Brat, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Mystikal and Master P, singers Usher and Joe, and boy band 98 Degrees. The album was the first since Carey's debut not to be co-produced heavily by Walter Afanasieff, her long-time collaborator who co-produced most of her signature ballads. In his place, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were enlisted. The album was promoted with several short clips shown on MTV showcasing Carey's feuds with her alter-ego from the "Heartbreaker" video, Bianca, played by Carey. This was one of Carey's first public attempts at acting, and many agree the humor of these videos showcase Carey's playful side and her true acting ability. Carey stated in the MTV Special highlighting her Rainbow World Tour that because there were leftover videos, they were integrated into her show. The album was nominated in the category Pop Album of the Year at 2000 Japan Gold Disc Awards.
Rainbow debuted at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart with 323,000 copies sold, the highest first-week sales of Carey's career at that time. In its debut week it was kept off the top spot by Rage Against the Machine's Battle of Los Angeles. The second week Rainbow stayed at number 2 selling another 228,000 copies, this time blocked by Faith Hill's Breathe. The album stayed in the top twenty for ten weeks and on the chart for thirty-five, making one re-entry. The album's weekly sales peaked at 369,000 copies in its eighth week (when it was at number 9). In total the album has sold 2,946,000 copies in the US and was eventually it was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. Although a commercial success, it was Carey's first studio album since Emotions (1991) not to reach number 1 in the U.S.
Rainbow produced two number 1 hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100: "Heartbreaker" and "Thank God I Found You". A cover version of the Phil Collins song "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" featuring the Irish boy band Westlife was released in the UK and became Carey's second number 1 single there, but the double A-side "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)"/"Crybaby" became her first single to miss the U.S. top twenty.
Rainbow was certified platinum in Europe by the IFPI for sales in excess of 2 million copies. Estimated sales in France stand at 675,300,[8] and estimated sales in Canada stand at 300,000.[9]

Glitter is the soundtrack album to the film of the same name by American R&B singer Mariah Carey. It was released by Virgin Records on September 11, 2001. To date, Glitter has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.
As a concept album of the sounds of the early 1980s, Glitter features contributions from dominant figures of the period: Rick James wrote "All My Life", Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis reworked their song "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and wrote with Carey the retro track "Want You", and Cameo are featured on lead single "Loverboy". The album also includes collaboratons with rappers Busta Rhymes, Mystikal, Da Brat, Ludacris, Fabolous, Ja Rule and Nate Dogg.
The album was released shortly before the film Glitter, and both album and film were critical and commercial failures, although Rob Sheffield gave the album a three star review in Rolling Stone, writing, "damn if Glitter isn't a big step forward in terms of maturity for one of pop music's eternal kids."[2] However, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of allmusic was less kind, giving the album 1.5 of 5 stars; he called it "an embarrassment" and "an utter meltdown — the pop equivalent of Chernobyl." Carey attributed the low sales of the album to its release coinciding with the September 11 attacks, saying in an interview, "The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. They tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1 [a reference to the peak position of the single "Loverboy", and not to the album]. The media was laughing at me and attacked me."[3]
The album debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Top Soundtracks chart, staying at the top for three weeks, and at number 7 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 116,000 copies in its first week of release, but it had a substantial slide: it remained in the top twenty for two weeks and on the chart itself for twelve weeks. Glitter was certified platinum by the RIAA in October 2001, and as of October 2007, it had sold just 636,000 copies in the United States. The soundtrack peaked at number-one in Japan, and was certified gold in Switzerland.
Lead single "Loverboy" peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100; after the song stalled at a low position on the chart, Virgin Records reduced the price of the single. The two follow-up singles, "Never Too Far" and "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)", became Carey's first singles not to chart on the Hot 100. A music video was filmed for a fourth single, "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life", but it was not officially released after Virgin Records ceased promotion of the album and paid Carey to leave the label.
The song "If We" was later re-worked by Damizza and released as a single titled "What Would You Do" with Butch Cassidy, Nate Dogg and Carey in 2004. Conflict between Damizza and Shade Sheist led Damizza to recruit Cassidy to replace Sheist on the single version. Sheist retaliated with his own remix titled "G-Mix", which is a re-worked version featuring Nune and Carey. "What Would You Do" failed to make the Hot 100 and received minimal airplay in Europe.
In 2002 for the 44th Grammy Award ceremony, the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis productions of the songs "Never Too Far", "Twister" and "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" were nominated for Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, but lost to T-Bone Burnett's Down from the Mountain: Live Concert Performances by the Artists & Musicians of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Fan Dance.
"Lead the Way" has gone on to become a fan favorite, and is known for a 18 second long belt toward the end of the song.

Daydream is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. Released on October 3, 1995 by Columbia Records, the album leaned towards the hip hop and Contemporary R&B genres in comparison to her previous albums, Music Box (1993) and Merry Christmas (1994). Throughout the project, Carey collaborated with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she wrote and produced most of her two previous albums. With Daydream, Carey took more control over the musical direction as well as the album's composition. Carey said she considered Daydream the beginning of her musical and vocal transformation, a change that became more obvious in her 1997 release, Butterfly. During the album's production, Carey endured many creative differences with her label, Columbia Records and husband, Tommy Mottola.
On Daydream, Carey collaborated with Jermaine Dupri for the first time, and co-wrote and produced a song with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, with whom she had collaborated on Music Box. It was also the first time she had worked with Boyz II Men, an R&B group consisting of four male vocalists. Together, they wrote the concept and lyrics for "One Sweet Day", a song that Carey co-produced with Afanasieff. With his assistance and the addition of a few contemporary producers, she was able to make a subtle transition into the R&B market. Daydream was nominated for six Grammy Awards at the 38th annual ceremony, during which Carey performed live. Due to the album's critical and commercial success, critics believed Carey would be one of the nights big winners. However, to her dismay, she was completely shut out, causing the subject to become very public and controversial.
Six singles were released from the album. "Fantasy", the album's lead single, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks, and became the second best-selling single of 1995 in the United States. The song topped the charts in Australia, Canada and New Zealand and became a top-five hit in Finland, France and the United Kingdom. "One Sweet Day" was the second single released from Daydream. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for sixteen weeks and became the longest-running number one single in US history, a record it still holds. It also topped the charts in Canada and New Zealand and peaked within the top five in Australia, France, Ireland and The Netherlands. Jointly the singles from Daydream spent a combined six months at the top of the Hot 100. To promote Daydream, Carey embarked on the short but successful, Daydream World Tour, visiting Japan and Europe.

Butterfly debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart with 236,000 copies sold in its first week; it remained there for one week, in the top twenty for twenty-one weeks and on the chart for fifty-five weeks (making one re-entry). The album sold more in both its fourteenth week and fifteenth week of release than in its opening week, peaking at 283,000 copies in its fifteenth (when it was at number 8). It has been certified 5x platinum by the RIAA and produced two number 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Honey" and "My All." "Honey" became the sixth single (and the third by Carey) to debut at number 1 on the Hot 100. The album also yielded the airplay-only singles "Butterfly" and "Breakdown." "The Roof (Back in Time)" and "Whenever You Call" received limited release in some countries.
Rolling Stone described Butterfly as "a transitional album" for Carey, who placed herself firmly in the "milieu of modern hip-hop-inflected R&B," while Allmusic stated that "it is one of her best albums, illustrating that Carey continues to improve and refine her music which makes her a rarity among her '90s peers."

The album focuses on several R&B-related genres, ranging from 1970s retro soul to quiet storm, gospel, and others. It received generally positive reviews and won a Grammy Award in 2006 for "Best Contemporary R&B Album". After debuting at number one with Carey's highest first-week sales during that time, it became the biggest selling album of 2005 in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Emancipation of Mimi has been certified six times platinum by the RIAA, and it is Carey's best-selling album in the U.S. since Daydream (1995).
