书还介绍了大萧条时期的美国文化,比如 The Wizard of Oz 和 Superman comics。 后来发生了 Attack on Pearl Harbor 和 The Tragedy of the St. Louis, Roosevelt

可能因为受到 the Domino Theory 和 the policy of Containment 的影响太大了。战火还扩大到 Laos(老挝)和 Cambodia(柬埔寨)去了,因为北越在那里建立了重要补给运输路线。 Washington, D.C. 里有 The American Vietnam Veterans Memorial of the National Mall。后来还拍出了 Apocalypse Now(现代启示录)和 Platoon(野战排) 电影。

De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae(On the Ruin and Conquest of Britian),这书也是第一个提到冰与火之歌・绝境长城的原型即 Hadrian's Wall 的文本。 Historia Regum BVritanniae(History of the Kings of Britain),加了很多角色,比如 Merlin,亚瑟之父 Uther Pendragon,亚瑟之母 Igerna,以及反派 Mordred。

World War II: A History from Beginning to End Goodreads
2019 - 10

Until 1939, World War I was known as “the war to end all wars,” but when Nazi Germany capped its mounting aggression against its neighbors by invading Poland, Europe was plunged into a second global conflict that threatened the entire continent as well as the far-flung colonial possessions claimed by the French, British, and Dutch. German triumphs saw nation after nation fall until only Great Britain remained defiant against Hitler’s dreams of conquest.

By late 1941, the United States was forced from neutrality into war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile Joseph Stalin’s Nonaggression Pact with the Germans became meaningless after Germany invaded the Soviet Union. In Europe, along the Eastern Front, and in the Pacific, the Allies battled the Axis Powers, and then, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the invasion of Normandy brought the fighting closer and closer to Berlin.

In the Pacific, the Allies fought the Japanese island by island in bloody battles where the bodies of fallen soldiers attested to the Japanese willingness to die for their emperor. Untested American President Harry Truman had to decide whether to continue the fighting in the conventional manner and allow more American troops to be slaughtered in battle, or to use a new and devastating secret weapon to bring the war to a cataclysmic conclusion.

In terms of world history, the year 1815 is mainly remembered for the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. But something else happened that year which is now largely forgotten but which had a fundamental impact on the whole world in the years that followed.

In April 1815, a volcano erupted on the island of Sumbawa in present-day Indonesia. The eruption itself was so powerful that it was audible thousands of miles away. The immediate area suffered from tsunamis, ash, and acid rainfall, while a cloud of gas and dust entered the upper atmosphere and blocked the full power of the sun from warming the Earth. As a direct result, the summer of 1816 was truly dismal. Crops failed across the Northern Hemisphere, leading to this year becoming known as the Year Without Summer. Crop failures caused famine, the spread of epidemics, mass migration on a level rarely seen before, and the complete breakdown of some cultures.

If we seek to understand what impact climate change may have, we need only look back to the devastating Year Without Summer.

The creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922 was one of the defining events of the twentieth century. This new federation, created to embody the ideals of communism and the notion of rule by the people, was intended to be different from any other nation in the world. This utopian vision inspired people around the world, and soon, communism became an international movement. However, the history of the Soviet Union did not develop in the way its originators envisaged.

What began as a concept of rule by the common people became a repressive dictatorship with ultimate power concentrated in the hands of one man. While the Soviet Union gained in military and industrial power, personal freedom for its citizens virtually disappeared. The federation persisted for almost 70 years, and for much of that period, it was at the heart of one of the most powerful and feared power blocs in the world. Then, in a stunningly short space of time, it collapsed and then disintegrated entirely. This is the story of the rise and abrupt fall of the Soviet Union.

On a human scale, the climate is something that may seem fixed and unchanging, but on a geological scale, our planet has been subject to vast periods when the climate has been notably warmer or colder than it is today. Perhaps the most famous of these fluctuations in the climate was the Great Ice Age.

We now know that Earth has been subject to at least five ice ages, with the first occurring over 2.5 billion years ago. The most recent, the Great Ice Age (also known as the Quaternary or Pleistocene Ice Age), gripped planet Earth from around 2.5 million years ago and saw its last glacial period end about 11,700 years ago. This ice age witnessed the development of modern humans and the evolution of the first human societies.

While these are ancient events, they do have direct relevance to the world in which we live today. Scientists have spent a great deal of time looking at the Great Ice Age, principally because understanding it could help us understand the complex web of linked factors that lead to climate change. That, in turn, may help us to understand the changes in climate we seem to be facing today. This is the fascinating story of the Great Ice Age.
