"In a relatively short period of time beginning in the mid-1970s Hamilton Bohannon, a drummer from Georgia, released an amazing amount of records. He began as the drummer for Stevie Wonder and later went on to be the bandleader and arranger for various Motown tours. Where all that talent went though I don’t know because after listening to a few of his albums you realize that almost all of his work relies on only one riff with hardly any changes. With most tracks clocking in at 5, 6, 7, 8 even 9 minutes long, that leads to some very monotonous music. Bohannon came right in the middle of this deluge so you get a lot of very long and droning songs."

"Wicked uptempo funky instrumentals from the great Hamilton Bohannon! The record captures him at a perfect point -- when he was taking advantage of the changing dancefloor scene to open up his groove a bit, but before he got lost in some of the triple-time tempos that ruined later albums. Titles include "The Funky Reggae", "The Bohannon Walk", "Bohannon's Beat Part 1", and "Gentle Breeze". (This copy has a light warp but still plays fine. About an inch of the cover is stained and wavy along the opening.) "
"Dedicated to metronomic simplicity, Bohannon tends to walk the line between hypnotic and robotic: the opener "Bohannon's Beat Part I" is a great example of the former, with a simple scratch guitar line that breeds tense excitement, but "Funky Reggae," a one-chord workout with no development or discernable melody - or reggae, for that matter - ends up on the wrong side of the line. Carolyn Crawford - who had also been with Motown in the mid-60s - adds wistful vocals to the bluesy, atypically slow "Can You Feel It." Again, Side Two is ballads, and this time around they're even slower and longer ("Gentle Breeze," with the simple theme stated by sparely used strings), though "The Day To Remember," based on a blues guitar riff, does feature very tasty organ from Lampkin. The wait for D’Angelo’s new studio album is almost over: Black Messiah, the long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s Voodoo, will be available for purchase on iTunes beginning Midnight on Monday.
Black Messiah spans 12 tracks and includes contributions from The Roots’ Questlove, Q-Tip, and Kendra Foster (Parliament Funkadelic).
Of the album title, D’Angelo said, “For me the title is about all of us. It’s about the world. It’s about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.”

Tom Misch releases his highly anticipated debut album Geography via his own label Beyond The Groove / Kobalt Music Recordings. This release sees Tom exploring his songwriting and his own vocals, singing on most of the tracks. Geography is an exploration of a musical landscape, named after a passion of Tom’s which was never pursued, it dances between genres including Disco, Soul, Hip-Hop and Jazz, a true testament to Tom’s diverse sound and genre fluidity. Standout track Movie is a melodic ode to romance written by Tom and his long term collaborator Carmody, and featuring guest vocals at the start by Tom’s sister Polly Misch The track displays a different side to Tom’s music as his calming voice lulls the listener into a daydream. Guests include De La Soul, GoldLink, Loyle Carner and Poppy Ajudha.

Yet another superb entry in Ace's short series of Expanded Versions of Millie Jackson's original Spring albums.

"Hurts So Good" first appeared in 1973, on the back of Ms. Jackson's Top 3 R&B/Top 30 Pop US success with its title track (her all-time biggest US hit, by the way). Its appearance also marked the first time that Millie recorded in the famous southern soul town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - where her major subsequent successes "Caught Up" and "Still Caught Up" (both also available in this series) would be recorded in their entirety.

This newly remastered version, from the original Spring album production master, adds a generous six bonus tracks, including a first-ever true stereo mix of Millie's non-album 45 "Breakaway", several very different mixes of some of the album's highlights and two `one take' demos that Millie never recorded `finished' versions of.

Once again issued with the co-operation and participation of Ms. Jackson herself, this is an hour's worth of seminal Millie that no true fan or collector will care to be without.

Cupid Deluxe is the follow up to Devonté Hynes’ debut as Blood Orange, 2011’s Coastal Grooves. Since that album’s release, Hynes has written and produced music for the likes of Solange, Sky Ferreira, MKS, and more. Cupid Deluxe shows a more expansive aural palate than its predecessor while retaining the pop sensibilities that Hynes has showcased since his days in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion. Simply put, Cupid Deluxe perfectly highlights why Hynes has become one of the most exhilarating and prolific voices creating music right now.

The album was produced by Hynes in his adopted hometown of New York City, mixed by Jimmy Douglass, and features amazing guest appearances by David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Samantha Urbani (Friends), Clams Casino, Despot, Adam Bainbridge (Kindness), Skepta and many more.

Certainly Edwin's most enduring album for Motown, and the one that had him shifting from groovy Agent OO Soul into the heavier soul artist who cut the classic War (What Is It Good For)! The album's also got a killer version of "California Soul", one of the best Motown-penned tracks from the time, plus the tracks Time, I Just Wanted To Cry, and She Should Have Been Home.

Face to Face With the Truth peaked at #114 on the charts, 71 slots lower than their self-titled debut, yet overall it's artistically more satisfying. Side One is straight head music, all remakes, but arranged totally different from their predecessors. "You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" had all the biting commentary of "Smiling Faces Sometimes," and then some. Originally done at a faster tempo by the Temptations, Norman Whitfield slowed the pace for the Truth. Joe Harris sang with perfect diction, making the stark lyrics even more riveting, while Brenda Joyce and Billie Calvin chirped like songbirds. Likewise for "Ungena Za Ulimengu (Unite the World)," another Temptation cut that Whitfield slowed and transformed into a psychedelic mind bender. You won't recognize the arrangement of "Friendship Train," a hit for Gladys Knight & the Pips; and Marvin Gaye's classic "What's Going On" may come off a bit too esoteric for most. Norman Whitfield never produced a song the same way twice, and that's the undisputed truth.
