SNAP! have become a true ‘hit machine’ and amassed countless awards in the process. After The Power, Anzilotti and Muenzing released further mega-sellers such as Ooops Up, Cult of SNAP! and Mary Had a Little Boy on their label Logic Records, all of which soared to the top places in the European charts. Music for the dancefloor is normally regarded as an ephemeral, transient commodity: here today, gone tomorrow. Something that the Frankfurt-based producer team Matthias Muenzing and Luca Anzilotti, better known as Snap!, have now been disproving for over 13 years.

A fantastic independent LP by the small local San Francisco-based Courtial! This is one of the records that has the "all killer no filler" tag all over it, even though its standout track is probably "Losing You", a fierce funky-latiney-rockish little number with a storming piano break in the intro that you might know from a compilation (Keb Darge, California Soul).
Courtial was founded by guitarist Bill Courtial & conga man Pete "Coke" Escovedo, with Errol Knowles on vocals. And believe me even with their middle-ages minstrel outfits they can hold a groove! A great feature of the record is the presence of a funky quirky keyboard that you can hear on the title track snippet. A gem of an album, and a real grower—repeated listens advised.

初めて通しで聴き終えた際の感想は、随分ゆるくあっさりした感触の作品だということだった。サウンド的には、70年代を思わせ
る生楽器主体ソウル・ファンク風サウンド(勿論それだけには留まらない)で、ゆらゆら帝国解散後音楽を止めても良いと彼自身
思う程に真っ白な状態に戻り、そこからコンガを始め自分のやりたい音に一から向き合った過程が刻まれている。そこにはゆら
ゆら帝国時代のある種サイケデリックな意匠はなりを潜め、ある意味とてもカジュアルで人懐っこい雰囲気が漂う。
しかしながらこの人の場合、音の表層の部分だけを追っても意味がない。その奥を辿ることでさらなる面白さが見えてくる。
不思議なのはさらりと流れる様なある種の淡白さを纏った音楽にも関わらず、耳をすり抜けていかないところ。耳や心の何処か
に引っ掛かりを残し、この感覚はなんだろう？と繰り返し音楽を再生し確かめたくなる。そのうち耳触りの良い音楽が快感に変わ
りいつの間にか嵌りこんでしまった。なんとも掴みどころがない感覚を与える作品だと思う。
所謂「お洒落」な音を出していながら、その上に乗せられる言葉のベクトルは徹底的に自己の内面で生まれる感情の葛藤に向け
られ、「君」との関係も何処か悶々としている。こういった音楽と言葉の捻じ曲がった結びつけ方も相当ユニークだ。
坂本氏が綴る言葉の中には、強引な励ましも、お涙頂戴のドラマがある訳でも、叱咤されるわけでもない、いわば過剰なカタルシ
スが皆無だ。この上なくシュールな映像が目に浮かぶ「ずぼんとぼう」等、歌う必然性さえ疑問に感じさせる言葉たちを敢えて歌
に仕立て耳を惹かせる処は実にこの人らしい。作風を反映したかのように彼の歌も常に一定のテンションを保ち、飄々とした風情
。それだけに聴き手がどんな心理状態におかれた時でもそばに置いて妨げにならない、しかし単なるBGMにならない希少な音楽
となっている。こういう作品を創れるというのは実はさり気なく凄いことではないだろうか。
雑誌のインタビューで彼は、震災を通し音楽に社会的メッセージを含ませるミュージシャン達の姿勢を認めながらも、自分は敢え
て「意味の無いもの」に囲まれることの幸せを感じたいと語る。本作からは、余計なものも含め自分の哲学に日々淡々と向き合う
ことへの幸福感が感じられる。そしてその感覚は生きる上で案外欠かせないものなのかも、本作を聴くとそんなことを想うのだ。

Made over the course of 2020, when the world was at a standstill, it’s the sound of a band growing up; five guys who’ve known each other since childhood and are finding their way together, in spite of all the major obstacles the last 18 months have thrown at them, when they were unable to return home to Australia and see their loved ones. Day/Night is huge in scope and sound, and its hopeful messages of perseverance through difficult times are a balm for these uncertain times.
