First Word Records is very proud to present a brand new EP from Yazmin Lacey - ’When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees’.
This EP follows on from her two recent singles, ’90 Degrees’ and ‘Something My Heart Trusts’, both of which are included here, along with three previously unreleased tracks, ’Heaven’, ‘Body Needs Healing’ and ’Burn & Rise’. This set illustrates again Yazmin’s candid songwriting delivered in her uniquely laidback soulful style, whilst a glorious fusion of neo-soul and jazz performed by Pete Beardsworth and her trusty band rides throughout.
In recent times, Yazmin has made live appearances on Jazz FM, BBC Radio 4, 1Xtra and NTS, & received widespread acclaim across the airwaves, including BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Worldwide FM and Mi Soul, plus Spotify love from the likes of The Independent and heavy support from DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Tom Ravenscroft, Huey Morgan and Jamie Cullum. Yazmin appeared heavily in The Guardian / The Observer's recent extensive feature on the UK's new Jazz movement too.
Initially a Brownswood ‘Future Bubbler’ graduate, Yazmin self-released her debut EP, 'Black Moon', last year. This lead to a Maida Vale session late 2017 with Jordan Rakei, Moses Boyd, Oscar Jerome and now label mates, Children of Zeus. She kicked off the year with a performance at the Worldwide Awards with Skinny Pelembe, and has recently done shows with artists such as Alfa Mist, Ezra Collective, Tall Black Guy and Fatima. Yazmin has a UK tour scheduled for November, as well as several festival appearances across Europe locked in.
There’s a lot more to come from this Notts-based Londoner yet. In Yazmin's words: "'90 Degrees' is about that time of the day / night when there's a shift in pace and energy. When you decide to lock off from the 'outside' world and create your own atmosphere, take some time to give thanks for what's breathing love into your life and smoke off the fuckeries. Moses Sumney evades definition as an act of duty: technicolour videos and monochrome clothes; Art Rock and Black Classical; blowing into Fashion Week from a small town in North Carolina; seemingly infinite collaborators, but only one staggering voice. A young life spent betwixt Southern California and Accra, Ghana — not so much rootless as an epyphite, an air plant. The scale is cinematic but the moves are precise deeds of art and stewardship. Sumney’s new, generous album, græ, is an assertion that the undefinable still exists and dwelling in it is an act of resistance.
The songs on græ may be divergent, like the visceral, Smashing Pumpkins drama of Virile and the intoxicated, outro jazz of Gagarin. HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in. I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. Just as Marvin Gayes Lets Get It On was about much more than the sex that it celebrated, so does Meshell Ndegeocellos putative love album Comfort Woman have more than seduction on its mind. Lust and romance frame the records concerns, but as with Gayes work, theyre seen as a liberating force: "I wanna get free with you," sings Ndegeocello near the discs beginning; she later quotes an anti-pie-in-the-sky verse from Bob Marleys "Get Up Stand Up" to hammer home the theme of salvation on Earth. Similarly, Comfort Woman is more musically ambitious than the bulk of recent neo-soul sets with which it shares an audience. A number of dubwise excursions and rock guitar solos ensure that a debt to the 70s is paid, but this is hardly a slavish Gaye/Curtis Mayfield tribute. Comfort Woman finds Ndegeocello in an inspired frame of mind and at a peak of invention. --Rickey Wright

Until a late flurry of percussion arrives, doleful guitar and bass are Solána Rowe’s only accompaniment on opener “Supermodel,” a stinging kiss-off to an adulterous ex. It doesn’t prepare you for the inventively abstract production that follows—disembodied voices haunting the airy trap-soul of “Broken Clocks,” “Anything”’s stuttering video-game sonics—but it instantly establishes the emotive power of her rasping, percussive vocal.
