The album is a four-part concept album based on Wright's then-wife Mildred's battle with depression, and is very much like a classic Pink Floyd concept album in its structure and overall feel.[citation needed] Two songs, "Reaching for the Rail" and "Breakthrough" feature Sinéad O'Connor on lead vocals, with Wright singing elsewhere. The album was recorded in Wright's personal studio in France. Broken China was only Wright's second solo record after 1978's Wet Dream and the last to be released before his death in September 2008.
Wright's Pink Floyd bandmate David Gilmour agreed to play on "Breakthrough." However, the approach for the song was changed later on, and Gilmour's performance was not used on the finished release.
On the DVD David Gilmour in Concert, a guest appearance is made by Wright, who sings "Breakthrough" accompanied by David Gilmour and his band.
The packaging has artwork by Pink Floyd's regular designer, Storm Thorgerson, and Peter Curzon.

Following the release of the 1977 album Animals and its accompanying "In the Flesh" tour, Pink Floyd went on hiatus, having become popular enough to support solo albums by bandmembers who were inclined to make them. Guitarist David Gilmour and keyboard player Richard Wright were. For his album, Wright assembled some of the backing musicians who had been accompanying Pink Floyd for years, in particular reed player Mel Collins and guitarist Snowy White. So it was no surprise that the resulting record, Wet Dream, sounded like outtakes from Pink Floyd sessions. Wright's keyboards had always been a major element in the Pink Floyd sound, and his singing and songwriting had also been a big part of the group's music, despite the increasing domination of Roger Waters. On Wet Dream, he was interested in providing typically slow, contemplative, keyboard-based arrangements and singing (on about every other tune) in a becalmed, echoey voice of marital discord and escape. Wright's conflict with Waters shortly would lead to his being dismissed from Pink Floyd (and then, bizarrely, hired back as a sideman), and in a sense his release of Wet Dream could be seen as an attempt to step out on his own. But the material, while pleasant enough, seemed more like music he might have written to work on with Pink Floyd if he still had as much input into the group as he had had back around the time of Dark Side of the Moon, rather than like an independent solo statement. It was hard to imagine anyone but Pink Floyd fans wanting to listen to such an album, and as it turned out not even enough of them cared, since the album sold poorly.

“Quite a clever forgery,” was Roger Waters’s judgement on 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, the first post-Waters, David Gilmour-led Floyd record. Clever enough, in fact, that it didn’t merely echo the formulas and tones of 1975’s Wish You Were Here, it cut to the quick of Floyd’s entire modus operandi.
Just as Meddle and The Dark Side Of The Moon had refined psychedelia into grander statements that hovered above – rather than at the centre of – prog rock, Momentary Lapse was a cultured take on the synthetic sheen of the 80s; sleek-shelled but containing meat. Its accompanying stadium tour was a similarly smart update, combining Floyd’s by-then traditional circular screen, a third eye into the mind of this sonic enigma, with the wire-flying inflatables they’d pioneered for Animals and The Wall.
Their 1988 live album Delicate Sound Of Thunder – expanded to encompass the full 140-minute set on this remix initially released in 2019’s The Later Years box – sounded so stellar it became the first record ever played in space. Fitting, since only aliens unfamiliar with earthling culture would fail to spot the folly of pitting the first disc, a near-complete run through of Momentary Lapse, against the combined might of the Floyd canon compiled on disc two.

Pink Floyd have announced a massive 16-disc box set chronicling material by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright from 1987 onward.
Pink Floyd The Later Years will include five CDs, six Blu-rays and five DVDs containing remixed albums, previously unreleased audio, concert films, never-before-seen footage and more.
The set follows 2016's Pink Floyd The Early Years 1965-1972, which chronicled the band's career prior to the release of 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon.
A newly remixed version of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, the band’s 1987 LP and first release without Roger Waters, kicks off the set. Gilmour and engineer Andy Jackson helmed the remix, recording new drum tracks with Mason and revisiting Wright’s keyboard parts. The duo also added a fresh coat of paint to Delicate Sound of Thunder, remixing the 1988 live album for inclusion in Pink Floyd The Later Years.
Other highlights include two previously unreleased performances by the band. First up is a 1989 concert in Venice, performed on a floating stage in front of St. Mark’s Square, which caused so much controversy that the city council and mayor were forced to step down. There's also a 1990 set at the Silver Clef Awards in Knebworth, England, which found Pink Floyd topping an all-star bill that included Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, Phil Collins and Eric Clapton.
Appearing in both video and audio form is Pink Floyd’s last live performance with Gilmour, Mason and Wright together. The bandmates reunited on May 10, 2007, at the tribute concert for their former bandmate, Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett.
A re-edited version of the Pulse concert movie, along with a previously unreleased film based around 2014’s The Endless River are also featured.
