Edvard Munch 豆瓣
作者: Sue Prideaux Yale University Press 2005 - 10
Although almost everyone recognizes Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream, hardly anyone knows much about the man. What kind of person could have created this universal image, one that so vividly expressed all the uncertainties of the twentieth century? What kind of experiences did he have? In this book, the first comprehensive biography of Edvard Munch in English, Sue Prideaux brings the artist fully to life. Combining a scholar’s precision with a novelist’s insight, she explores the events of his turbulent life and unerringly places his experiences in their intellectual, emotional, and spiritual contexts.
With unlimited access to tens of thousands of Munch’s papers, including his letters and diaries, Prideaux offers a portrait of the artist that is both intimate and moving. Munch sought to paint what he experienced rather than what he saw, and as his life often veered out of control, his experiences were painful. Yet he painted throughout his long life, creating strange and dramatic works in which hysteria and violence lie barely concealed beneath the surface. An extraordinary genius, Munch connects with an audience that reaches around the world and across more than a century.

作者: Fiona Bradley Tate 2002 - 1
Paula Rego (b. 1935) is acknowledged to be one of the leading figurative artists at work today. Influenced by Surrealism, folklore, dreams, and Disney animation, she creates strongly narrative works imbued with a sense of subversive mystery.
Fiona Bradley provides a thorough and searching account of Rego's life and work, drawing on new interviews with the artist that shed light on Rego's own assessment of her art. Six key works, demonstrating the development of her working methods, are discussed in depth.

Oskar Kokoschka 豆瓣
作者: Natter, Tobias G. 编 Dumont Buchverlag 2002 - 4
Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) is one of Austria's finest Expressionist artists. His paintings are renowned and admired for their vivid colour and restless energy. This book focuses on the early portraits that Kokoschka painted in Vienna and Berlin on the eve of World War I. Perhaps the best known and most highly esteemed of all his works, these portraits are examples of Kokoschka's use of ecaggeration and distortion of colour to convey deep emotioni and psychological tension. they also present a look at many of the important intellectual figures of the era, for their subjects include Peter Altenbery, Adolf Loos, Alma Mahler and Kokoschka himself (in his "Self Portrait as Knight Errant"). This illustrated book includes not only these oil portraits but also some of Kokoschka's drawings of the same sitters and a selection of the postcards, fans and posters he made for the Wiener Werkstatte in the period before the portraits were completed, all of which shed light on his early development. There are also discussions on the culture and history of Vienna and Berlin in the pre-war period; Kokoschka's shift from Art Nouveau to Expressionism; his place within the German and Austrian Expressionist movements; his reception in the United States; and more. This book is the catalogue for a major exhibition that opens at the Neue galerie, New York on 15th March 2002 and runs until 10th June. The show then travels to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany from 4th July to 29th September 2002.

Jeff Wall (Modern Artists) 豆瓣
作者: Craig Burnett Tate Gallery 2005 - 11
""I don't paint but I began as a painter. I take the term "painter" as figurative.... Painter can mean 'maker' in that sense."" -Jeff Wall in conversation with David Shapiro Born in 1946 in British Columbia, Jeff Wall has shown internationally for the last 25 years and is one of the most intriguing and influential artists working today. His signature works are large-scale narrative photographs in the form of backlit transparencies mounted in light boxes, like bus stop advertisements. Rather than advertising products, Wall's photographs celebrate moments of everyday life, often ones he has observed while driving around the streets of his native Vancouver, and then re-created using actors. His use of the light box as a medium has been copied by many younger artists, and his theoretical writings on photography are widely admired. This book is part of a Tate Publishing series focused on living artists. Generously illustrated, accessible, and affordable, the Modern Artists series will build to become an essential reference for all those interested in contemporary visual culture.

Portraits 豆瓣
作者: Helmut Newton / 赫尔穆特·牛顿 Schirmer Art Books 2004
Newton’s collection of portraits from the worlds of film, fashion, politics and culture can be considered a pantheon of VIP’s. But his work is a lot more besides. From his portraits, one can see that he would have most liked to be a Roman paparazzo – as he once admitted. Anyone who had a portrait made by him knew what the result would be, and by the 1980’s there were absolutely no ‘beautiful people’ in this world who did not want to be photographed by him! In front of his camera, both men and women peeled off their covers – literally as well as figuratively. His brilliant staged creations celebrate the attractiveness and prominence of his models as well as their vanity and imperfections. Newton’s top-quality work for major fashion journals and elitist art magazines is likewise first-class erotic art. This collection was first published by us in 1985.

Edward Hopper 豆瓣
作者: Rolf Gunter Renner Benedikt Taschen, Cologne 2000 - 5
Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is considered the first significant American painter in 20th-century art. After decades of patient work, Hopper enjoyed a success and popularity that since the 1950s has continually grown. In canvas after canvas he painted the loneliness of big-city people. Many of Hopper's pictures represent views of streets and roads, rooftops, and abandoned houses, depicted in a brilliant light that strangely belies the melancholy mood of the scenes. Hopper's paintings are marked by striking juxtapositions of colour, and by the clear contours with which the figures are demarcated from their surroundings. His extremely precise focus on the theme of modern men and women in the natural and man-made environment sometimes lends his pictures a mood of eerie disquiet. On the other hand, Hopper's renderings of rocky landscapes in warm brown hues, or his depictions of the seacoast, exude an unusual tranquillity that reveals another, more optimistic side of his character.
