The ever-mysterious Donna Tartt tells us a little about her childhood in this non-fiction essay for Harper's Magazine, therefore giving us a glimpse into what created her enigma. Published during the media-blitz that surrounded The Secret History, in this essay Tartt reveals intimate details about herself in a way that she would later avoid.

It's fascinating to find so many of her inspirations of The Secret History, The Little Friend (especially this book), and The Goldfinch in the short but charming essay. From Tartt's humorous, reflective, but also emotional writing, we can see how her Southern roots influenced her writing and transformed her perception of the world from a young age.

My Evil Mother: A Short Story Goodreads
My Evil Mother
Margaret Atwood Amazon Original Stories 2022 - 4
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed. But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted.

What I like about this book: the closeness of a gang, the loss of a friend, the trauma and agony, the wit and charm; what I hate about this book: the heroine and the hero, with almost zero chemistry and the fact that the author had to come up with a traumatic background story for the hero to explain his motives really threw my off.
A night that changes everything.” 我相信大部分读者看到这里,都能感觉到这个封面所有的信号都在指向(misleading)friends to lovers, probably been pining each other for years, and one night (stand, maybe) changes everything,然后也许剧情就是在写pining和两人如何处理变化的关系里走向romance的必然结局? 抱着这样的期待,再来看简介: “Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday pub trivia night is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too. But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever. In the aftermath, Eve’s world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction... They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?” ok,很好啊,所有要素齐全了! 这不来了吗?),而且“can’t stop thinking about what could have been”(second chance? What could POSSIBLY go wrong? Well, it turned out that everything went wrong, dreadfully. People We Meet on Vacation我看了一点也无感,甚至觉得好俗好无聊......

È stato così
Frances Frenaye New Directions 2019 - 6
Finally back in print, a frighteningly lucid feminist horror story about marriage
The Dry Heart begins and ends with the matter-of-fact pronouncement: “I shot him between the eyes.” As the tale―a plunge into the chilly waters of loneliness, desperation, and bitterness―proceeds, the narrator's murder of her flighty husband takes on a certain logical inevitability. Stripped of any preciousness or sentimentality, Natalia Ginzburg's writing here is white-hot, tempered by rage. She transforms the unhappy tale of an ordinary dull marriage into a rich psychological thriller that seems to beg the question: why don't more wives kill their husbands?

Jill Gutowitz 2022 - 3
Perfect for fans of Samantha Irby and Trick Mirror, a funny, whip-smart collection of personal essays exploring the intersection of queerness, relationships, pop culture, the internet, and identity, introducing one of the most undeniably original new voices today.
Jill Gutowitz’s life—for better and worse—has always been on a collision course with pop culture. There’s the time the FBI showed up at her door because of something she tweeted about Game of Thrones. The pop songs that have been the soundtrack to the worst moments of her life. And of course, the pivotal day when Orange Is the New Black hit the airwaves and broke down the door to Jill’s own sexuality. In these honest examinations of identity, desire, and self-worth, Jill explores perhaps the most monumental cultural shift of our lifetimes: the mainstreaming of lesbian culture. Dusting off her own personal traumas and artifacts of her not-so-distant youth she examines how pop culture acts as a fun house mirror reflecting and refracting our values—always teaching, distracting, disappointing, and revealing us.
Girls Can Kiss Now is a fresh and intoxicating blend of personal stories, sharp observations, and laugh-out-loud humor. This timely collection of essays helps us make sense of our collective pop-culture past even as it points the way toward a joyous, uproarious, near—and very queer—future.

He leads a platoon in Afghanistan just after 9/11 and advances to the pinnacleRecon two years later, on the eve of war with Iraq. He vows to bring all his men home safely, and to do so hell need more than his top-flight education. Fick unveils the process that makes Marine officers such legendary leaders and shares his hard-won insights into the differences between military ideals and military practice, which can mock those ideals. In this deeply thoughtful account of what its like to fight on todays front lines, Fick reveals the crushing pressure on young leaders in combat. Split-second decisions might have national consequences or horrible immediate repercussions, but hesitation isnt an option. One Bullet Away never shrinks from blunt truths, but ultimately it is an inspiring account of mastering the art of war.

But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her--how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way. Because Maren Yearly doesn't just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson's eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car. But when her mother abandons her the day after her sixteenth birthday, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, and finds much more than she bargained for along the way. Faced with a world of fellow eaters, potential enemies, and the prospect of love, Maren realizes she isn't only looking for her father, she's looking for herself. Camille DeAngelis' Bones & All is an astonishingly original coming-of-age tale that is at once a gorgeously written horror story as well as a mesmerizing meditation on female power and sexuality.
