小说的故事发生在十二世纪末英王狮心理查一世被囚在国外前后。理查王黩武喜功，一一九一年发起十字军东征，因参加远征的基督教国家内部分崩离析，不久就被迫班师。在归途中遇风暴，理查率领少数随从乔装平民取道维也纳回英，被奥地利公爵所俘，囚禁在多瑙河上城堡中一年余，后来付了大量赎金，才于一一九四年获释归国。
