The narrative of Martha Ballard, reconstructed from her diary and numerous archives by Ulrich, has been able to present a lively image of an everyday woman. The power or the informativeness of this book is its detailed narrations on different dimensions, e.g. medical, communal, religious, etc., of a person, of a family, and of a community.
