Identities, Boundaries, and Social Ties
Charles Tilly Paradigm Publishers 2006 - 1
Identities, Boundaries and Social Ties offers a distinctive, coherent account of social processes and individuals' connections to their larger social and political worlds. It is novel in demonstrating the connections between inequality and de-democratization, between identities and social inequality, and between citizenship and identities. The book treats interpersonal transactions as the basic elements of larger social processes. Tilly shows how personal interactions compound into identities, create and transform social boundaries, and accumulate into durable social ties. He also shows how individual and group dispositions result from interpersonal transactions. Resisting the focus on deliberated individual action, the book repeatedly gives attention to incremental effects, indirect effects, environmental effects, feedback, mistakes, repairs, and unanticipated consequences. Social life is complicated. But, the book shows, it becomes comprehensible once you know how to look at it.

Brokerage and Closure
Ronald S. Burt Oxford University Press, USA 2007 - 10
Social Capital, the advantage created by location in social structure, is a critical element in business strategy. Who has it, how it works, and how to develop it have become key questions as markets, organizations, and careers become more and more dependent on informal, discretionary relationships. The formal organization deals with accountability; Everything else flows through the informal: advice, coordination, cooperation friendship, gossip, knowledge, trust. Informal relations have always been with us, they have always mattered. What is new is the range of activities in which they now matter, and the emerging clarity we have about how they create advantage for certain people at the expense of others. This is done by brokerage and closure. Ronald S. Burt builds upon his celebrated work in this area to explore the nature of brokerage and closure. Brokerage is the activity of people who live at the intersection of social worlds, who have a vision advantage of seeing and developing good ideas, an advantage which can be seen in their compensation, recognition, and the responsibility they're entrusted with in comparison to their peers. Closure is the tightening of coordination in a closed network of people, and people who do this do well as a complement to brokers because of the trust and alignment they create. Brokerage and Closure explores how these elements work together to define social capital, showing how in the business world reputation has come to replace authority, pursued opportunity assignment, and reward has come to be associated with achieving competitive advantage in a social order of continuous disequilibrium.
Networks and Organizations
Nitin Nohria Harvard Business Review Press 1994 - 7
Networks form essential links in all organizations. They exist among co-workers, among firms, and among individuals and institutions. They establish patterns that both propel and impede activity. Since networks are such a vital component of how organizations function, it is increasingly important for businesses to understand how they work. "Networks and Organizations" explores the significant link between the structure of an organization and how it affects action. Using the perspectives of leading scholars and practitioners in sociology and management, it examines such timely issues as: is entrepreneurial activity easier in some networks than in others?; can electronic ties substitute for face-to-face relations?; are industries such as biotechnology better learning systems because of extensive networking?; do highly networked economies, like Japan's, have a comparative advantage? Based on a Harvard Business School colloquium, this book considers networks in various firms, industries and economies. It aims to provide managers and researchers with new insight into understanding the pivotal role of networks in organizations.

The Critical Mass in Collective Action
Gerald Marwell / Pamela Oliver Cambridge University Press 1993 - 6
The problem of collective action is that each member of a group wants other members to make necessary sacrifices while he or she 'free rides', reaping the benefits of collective action without doing the work. Inevitably the end result is that no one does the work and the common interest is not realized. This book analyses the social pressure whereby groups solve the problem of collective action. The authors show that the problem of collective action requires a model of group process and cannot be deduced from simple models of individual behaviour. They employ formal mathematical models to emphasize the role of small subgroups of especially motivated individuals who form the 'critical mass' that sets collective action in motion. The book will be read with special interest by sociologists, social psychologists, economists and political scientists. It will also be of concern to those in industrial relations and communications research working on issues in collective action and rational choice.
