If you simply can only have one Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers disc (and why would you stop there?), it absolutely must be MOANIN'. This 1958 Blue Note date is the cream of the early Messengers' studio sessions. The group of this period featured the wailing Lee Morgan (trumpet), the swinging Benny Golson (sax) and the soulful Bobby Timmons (piano) with longtime bassist Jymie Merritt by Blakey's side. All of the pieces fell into place here to create one of the most hard-swinging, blues-inflected records in jazz history.
Timmons' classic title cut sets the pace as it's laid-back call-and-response chorus and swinging bridge will get in your soul and start your head bobbing. Golson's bouncing "Are You Real" and the subtle "Along Came Betty" feature that golden Messengers ensemble sound that can't be matched as Blakey drives his men mercilessly. The most dynamic tracks, of course, are the drum feature "The Drum Thunder Suite," a Blakey tour-de-force, and the powerful "Blues March" featuring Art's signature shuffle groove. A delightful reading of the standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine" caps it all off. This is the one to get first.

诺拉琼丝和鼠尾老大是旧识,公元2008年合作过一张唱片,他建议这次可以做一些较黑暗,较情绪化的音乐。只是诺拉琼丝当时仍处在「疗伤期」,不是那么愿意让音乐再次揭开心里那道还没结痂的伤。两人不断沟通,谈了许多与感情相关的主题,鼠尾老大提供了不同的视角让诺拉琼丝看待这一切,让她有了新的想法:「这是做音乐有趣的地方,自己生活里的烦恼或痛苦,其实可以藉由音乐,转化成对其他人的一种向上力量。」
专辑就象是一趟色调昏暗的心灵之旅,有些歌听起来就像我们熟悉的诺拉琼丝,比方开场的《Good Morning》,但大部分其它作品的节奏与质地,对她来说都是新鲜的挑战。《Travelin’ On》是将印象派古典音乐与七零年代乡村音乐结合而成。《Out on the Road》充满孤寂、苦涩,却带些甜意,英文单字Bittersweet大概是最好的形容。《After the Fall》,则彷彿灰色梦境里的镜像,见着自己如此憔悴,却怎么也走不出去。至于《Miriam》,诺拉琼丝用一种极具魅力的平静声音诠释,细细雕琢过的情感,象是一道来自伤心世界里的冷光。整张专辑有条固定的故事线,主轴就是伤痛。标题曲《Little Broken Hearts》讲着旧爱虽美,但碎心人儿们决定挥刀斩情丝。而最跳Tone的一首歌,非《Happy Pills》莫属!旋律与节奏都象是在晴空底下欢乐游行,听来一点不伤感,但歌词里讲述着「试着把一切搞定,便再也不用看见你那张脸」,毕竟只要自己愿意,心念一转,伤痛早不知所踪!

Ramsey Lewis has long straddled the boundaries between jazz and pop. In fact, some of his music sounds more in the realm of easy listening than anything else. This 1977 effort combines elements of what some have termed "elevator music" with funk, soul, and jazzy melodies and harmonies. We even hear a dash of disco thrown in for good measure. Indeed, TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD is a time piece of sorts--all eight tracks have a distinct '70s flair. Lewis plays Rhodes keyboard on most tracks, the drums are heavily muffled, the electric bass is strictly used to add the element of funk, and unison horn riffs jump out of the music. However, a fine soprano saxophone solo is heard on the title track, and Lewis' own solos employ a jazz vocabulary that is more advanced than many of his crossover contemporaries. Highlights include "Intimacy" (mainly for the lovely piano introduction) and Lewis' instrumental version of the pop hit "Wandering Rose," which is quite soulful and danceable (perfect for anyone planning a retro party).
