For nearly four hundred years the Changlu salt merchants played a leading role in the urbanization, commercial development, and social change of the city of Tianjin. As early as the fifteenth century, this small yet important group of citizens negotiated with the state as revenue-farmers, developing and defending their businesses and customs while evolving their own urban culture. In this the first detailed study in English of the mercantile activities and social role of Tianjin's salt merchants, Kwan Man Bun reveals how they helped stabilize the city and assumed many civic responsibilities, providing relief, charities, and other services to their fellow citizenry.

Although these developments resemble the emergence of an idealized "public sphere" as in Europe, Kwan makes clear that Tianjin's social changes were not grounded on "rational discourse" but rather drew their strength and continuity from merchant networks based on exclusivity, wealth, education, and kinship.

《天津租界史(插图本)》是由英国人雷穆森撰写的有关天津租界历史的两部著作合编而成。其一《天津插图本史纲》1925年由天津印字馆出版。其二《天津的成长》最初连载于《东方时报》，后于1924年由天津印字馆出版单行本，天津法文图书馆发行。
《天津插图本史纲》讲述了天津各国租界从设立起直至民国时期所发生的最有影响、最有趣的种种事件，是早年西方人研究天津的著述中，资料最丰富、论述最详尽、最生动的《天津租界史(插图本)》。天津租界多达九国，居民来自十余个国家。不同的文化和生活方式，中国特殊的近代社会环境，造就了丰富生动的历史。多国的管理，不同的语言，又增加了研究的难度。《天津租界史(插图本)》作者不仅运用了各租界当局的资料，阅读了历史亲历者的回忆录、日记、笔记，还访问了不少当年在世的外国居民。20世纪初的二十年，是近代天津城市快速发展的时期。

本书是“天津记忆”丛书之一，是国内首次比较系统地将日本人有关天津的文献资料辑录编译出版。总共收录了日本人有关天津的游记、日记、见闻录等文字20篇，并附有3篇旅行指南。内容涉及了近代天津的政治、经济、社会及风土人情等等，是部分来华日本人的所见所闻，从中可以看出当时日本人对华人的立场与态度。

《津门书肆记》收录雷梦辰先生文章六篇，包括《津门书肆记》、《津门书肆二记》、《天津三大商场书肆记》、《晚清至解放前天津书坊刻印本书籍知见录》、《直隶书局创办始末考》、《近代天津私人藏书述略》，其中《津门书肆二记》乃曹式哲先生根据其遗稿和卡片整理，为首次与读者完整见面。藏书史也是近年学术研究的热点，但天津作为近代藏书文化重镇，相关研究成果还不多见，《津门书肆记》因此有一定补阙意义。

《万国天津：全球化历史的另类视角》是法国学者辛加拉维鲁依据大量档案文献，撰写的一部研究八国联军临时政府对天津进行殖民统治的历史专著。自列强在北京与清政府开始谈判以来，联军便在天津组织了临时政府，统治这座城市长达两年零一个月之久，直到 1902年 8 月 15 日才将之移交给新任直隶总督袁世凯（1859-1916）。
在国内研究庚子国变和八国联军侵华史的相关论著中，有关天津临时政府及其管治史的著述并不多见。本书更以丰富的史料和生动的历史叙事而独树一帜。

《天津城市历史地图集》收集的最早的原始地图是1674年的《天津卫城图》，最晚的是1946年出版的《最新天津市街图》。

《近代外国人记述的天津》精选了五种亲历者的记述，作者有军人、医生、传教士、公务员。他们有的在某个特殊历史时段到过天津，有的曾长期在天津生活。他们通过日记、回忆录、传记等形式，记录下了他们在天津的生活，和他们亲眼看到的这个城市。其内容之鲜活，笔触之生动，读起来让人颇有身临其境的感觉。

《天津商会档案钱业卷(套装共29册)》中记录了天津商会由官办商务局到商务公所，再到商务总会的演变过程。天津商会正是在处理清末津直地区纷繁复杂的社会矛盾中，由天津一埠的三十二个行业，逐步发展到直隶全境，八九年间，在五十余州、县、乡、镇建立了自己的分会和分所，从光绪三十三年（一九○七）起，与上海、广州、厦门、苏州等商务总会一起，发起筹建中华商会联合会，并在政治经济生活中，形成一股颇具影响的社会势力。

This timely book traces the development of banking and paper money in republican Tianjin in order to explore the creation of social trust in financial institutions. Framing the study around Bian Baimei, a conscientious branch manager of the Bank of China, Brett Sheehan analyzes the actions of bankers, officials, and local elites as they tried to overcome political and financial crises and instill trust in the banking system.After early failures in promoting trust, government authority as a regulator of the financial system gradually increased, peaking in 1935, when the state unified the money supply for the first time in several hundred years. Concurrently, when local elites proved unable to develop successful strategies to make people trust the system, their influence declined.
The need for trust in increasingly complex financial arrangements redefined state-society relations, simultaneously enhancing state power and creating new constraints on the actions of both elites and governments.
Trust in Troubled Times is a valuable new perspective on the economic, social, and political history of modern China.
