东方社会发展道路与社会主义的理论和实践》以在东方经济文化落后国家建设和发展社会主义为题，系统、全面地梳理了马克思、恩格斯、列宁的社会发展理论，阐明了马克思、恩格斯关于生产力是人类社会发展根本动力和未来社会发展四阶段的基本论断，澄清了国内外理论界对这些问题的误读或误解，恢复了马克思、恩格斯思想的本来面目。在此基础上，本书进一步揭示了中国特色社会主义理论体系的社会主义初级阶段理论与马克思、恩格斯、列宁的东方社会发展道路思想一脉相承的理论传承关系，为初级阶段理论提供了深厚坚实的理论基础。本书通过深入考察从马克思、恩格斯、列宁到邓小平在社会主义建设上的理论探索和实践经验，回答了在东方经济文化落后国家如何建设社会主义，建设什么样的社会主义的问题。
本书分为四编，二十二章。第一编阐述作为东方社会发展道路研究的理论基础的五个问题，包括社会形态及其划分方法、人的活动的目的性和社会发展的规律性、历史决定论和主体选择及其相互关系、历史进步及其评价尺度、马克思主义的整体性等五个马克思主义的基本原理，它们是正确理解马克思、恩格斯的东方社会发展道路理论的前提。
第二编阐述“亚细亚生产方式”概念的含义及其历史演变问题。本编分四个时期——1853年以前的时期、19世纪50年代中后期、以《资本论》为代表的时期、摩尔根《古代社会》一书发表以后——阐明“亚细亚生产方式”概念的含义及其在社会发展序列中的地位的历史演变，说明了长期以来人们在这个问题上的意见分歧所以之大的原因，就在于没有看到在马克思、恩格斯不同时期的著作中“亚细亚生产方式”概念的含义及其在社会发展序列中的地位是有变化的。
第三编论述俄国社会发展道路问题，标题是“‘跨越资本主义制度的卡夫丁峡谷’问题的再探讨”。关于这个问题，国内学术理论界十分关注，讨论激烈，分歧很大。本篇回答了马克思、恩格斯所讲的“俄国革命”是什么性质的革命；在俄国社会发展道路问题上马克思早年思想与晚年思想是否对立；马克思与恩格斯是否对立；俄国十月革命和中国革命的胜利是否是对马克思、恩格斯关于跨越“资本主义制度的卡夫丁峡谷”思想的证实；等等重大的理论问题。
第四编是对社会主义理论和实践的反思。这一编是全书篇幅最大的一编，约占全书的三分之一，包括马克思恩格斯著作中未来社会名称的历史演变、全面认识资本的作用、从新的视角反思社会主义的前途和命运、马克思恩格斯对未来社会基本特征的设想、关于“一国能否建成社会主义”的论争、邓小平的社会主义初级阶段理论、邓小平对社会主义本质理论的贡献、邓小平对历史时代理论的贡献等八个重大的社会主义理论问题。本编通过系统论述马克思主义经典著作，严格以马克思、恩格斯、列宁著作中的相关论述为根据，对这些问题作了较为深入具体的阐发，并且按照时间顺序首先阐发马克思、恩格斯创立的科学社会主义的几个重要基本原理，然后阐述列宁在新的历史条件下对科学社会主义理论的继承和发展，阐述列宁关于经济文化落后的国家向社会主义过渡的特点以及如何进行社会主义建设的观点，然后阐述邓小平创立的社会主义初级阶段理论，阐述中国特色社会主义理论对科学社会主义理论的继承和发展。这一部分既是对科学社会主义基本原理的阐述，又是对科学社会主义理论发展史的阐述，史论结合得非常紧密。
