Underground Passages [
Jesse S. Cohn AK Press 2014
"There is, quite literally, nothing like this book available. Various studies of anarchist culture do exist, some quite good, but none approach the breadth or depth of Jesse Cohn's study. He is able to do something different: explore what forms of anarchist resistance culture in different places and times have had in common, and therefore what made them specifically anarchist. --Kenyon Zimmer, author of Immigrants against the State: Yiddish and Italian Anarchism in America
"Readers [of Underground Passages] will appreciate how anarchist culture (poetry, songs, fiction, plays, illustrations, and films) was by no means monolithic in approach or rationale, since different anarchist creators at different times saw the importance of making anarchist resistance culture relevant to particular settings or 'deterritorializing' it to give it a more global feel that fit with the transnational and internationalist dimensions of global anarchism." --Kirwin Shaffer, author of Black Flag Boricuas: Anarchism, Antiauthoritarianism, and the Left in Puerto Rico, 1897-1921
What anarchists demanded from art was what they demanded from all aspects of their political lives: that it should, as much as possible, embody the principle in the practice, the end in the means. While prefiguring a post-revolutionary world, anarchists simultaneously created a richly textured "resistance culture" to sustain their ideals and identities amid everyday lives defined by capital and the state, allowing an escape from domination even while enmeshed in it. Underground Passages investigates and interrogates these creations across the history of the movement. Whether discussing famous artists like John Cage or Diane DiPrima or unknown and anonymous anarchist writers, Cohn shows how aesthetic shifts both reflected and influenced and political and economic ones. This is cultural criticism at its best--and most useful.
Jesse Cohn is the author of Anarchism and the Crisis of Representation: Hermeneutics, Aesthetics, Politics, and an associate professor of English at Purdue University North Central in Indiana.
Slow Burning Fuse [
John Quail PM Press 2019 - 06
In the accounts of the radical movements that have shaped our history, anarchism has received a raw deal. Its visions and aims have been distorted and misunderstood, its achievements forgotten. The British anarchist movement during the years 1880–1930, while borrowing from Europe, was self-actuated and independent, with a vibrant tale all its own. In The Slow Burning Fuse, John Quail shows a history largely obscured and rewritten following 1919 and the triumph of Leninist communism. The time has arrived to resurrect the works of the early anarchist clubs, their unsung heroes, tumultuous political activities, and searing manifestos so that a truer image of radical dissent and history can be formed. Quail’s story of the anarchists is one of utopias created in imagination and half-realised in practice, of individual fights and movements for freedom and self-expression—a story still being written today.
Quiet Rumours [
Dark Star Collective AK Press/Dark Star 2002
From consciousness-raising groups to hair-razing punk rockers, a fascinating window into the development of the women's movement, in the words of the women who moved it. Spanning the century, these classic essays contextualize feminism as a larger politics of liberation and equality. Whether it's Emma Goldman's attack on suffrage, the infamous Second Wave debates, or armed struggle group Rote Zora's call for direct action, critical analysis and biting polemic connect the dots to show not just how anarchism influenced feminism, but how feminism changed and continues to change the political landscape around it. Includes key essays "The Tyranny of Structurelessness" and "The Tyranny of Tyranny" which broke open the feminist debate on organizing in the 1970s."
The Nation on No Map [
William C. Anderson AK Press 2021 - 11
The Nation On No Map uses Black anarchism as a tool of survival in an age of crisis. Picking up where his co-authored debut As Black As Resistance left off, Anderson rejects nationalism, the State, and citizenship as avenues to achieve liberation. He issues a bold case for prioritizing basic survival as social and environmental conditions grow worse and global disasters abound. In order to overcome oppression, he says, people will have to first overcome certain barriers to and ways of thinking about liberation that go beyond mere critique of the U.S. By broadening our understanding of what stands in our way to include things like celebrity, dogma, and the idea of nationhood itself (Black or otherwise), The Nation On No Map encourages readers to utilize, and then exceed, the ideals and strategies of Black anarchism, regardless of what term they use to describe the struggle for liberation.
Anarcho-Blackness [
Marquis Bey AK Press 2020 - 07
Anarcho-Blackness seeks to define the shape of a Black anarchism. Classical anarchism tended to avoid questions of race—specifically Blackness—as well as the intersections of race and gender. Bey addresses this lack, not by constructing a new cannon of Black anarchists but by outlining how anarchism and Blackness already share a certain subjective relationship to power, a way of understanding and inhabiting the world. Through the lens of Black feminist and transgender theory, he explores what we can learn by making this kinship explicit, including how anarchism itself is transformed by the encounter. If the state is predicated on a racialized and gendered capitalism, its undoing can only be imagined and undertaken by a political theory that takes race and gender seriously.
Print Culture and the Formation of the Anarchist Movement in Spain, 1890–1915 [图书] Goodreads
AK Press 2022 - 9
The origins of one the largest anarchist movements in history, told through its newspapers, pamphlets, books, and flyers.

Print Culture and the Formation of the Anarchist Movement in Spain, 1890–1915 analyzes the formation of a mass anarchist movement in Spain spanning the turn of the twentieth century. This movement organized the largest body of anarchists in world history: the anarcho-syndicalist National Confederation of Labour (CNT). Anarchist cultural practices became ingrained in localities across the whole of Spain, laying foundations which maintained the movement’s popular support until the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.

This book shows that grassroots print culture was central to these developments: driving the development of ideology and strategy and providing an informal structure to a movement that shunned recognized leadership and bureaucracy. It offers a rich analysis of the cultural foundations of Spanish anarchism, while challenging claims that the movement was “exceptional” or “peculiar” in its formation, by situating it alongside other decentralized, bottom-up mobilizations across historical and contemporary contexts.

Hood Feminism [
Mikki Kendall Viking 2020 - 2
Review
“In prose that is clean, crisp, and cutting, Kendall reveals how feminism has both failed to take into account populations too often excluded from the banner of feminism and failed to consider the breadth of issues affecting the daily lives of millions of women. . . . Throughout, Kendall thoughtfully and deliberately takes mainstream feminism to task . . . [but] if Hood Feminism is a searing indictment of mainstream feminism, it is also an invitation. For every case in which Kendall highlights problematic practices, she offers guidance for how we can all do better.”
—NPR.org
“A deeply personal portrait of want and a polemic that brings race and gender into the discussion of poverty.”
—The Washington Post
“A searing indictment of . . . the modern feminist movement’s failure to support marginalized women and to integrate issues of race, class and sexual orientation.”
—USA Today
“This book is an act of fierce love and advocacy, and it is urgently necessary.”
—Samantha Irby, author of Meaty and We Are Never Meeting in Real Life
“Mikki’s book is a rousing call to action for today’s feminists. It should be required reading for everyone.”
—Gabrielle Union, author of We’re Going to Need More Wine
Kurdish Women's Stories [图书] Goodreads
Pluto Press 2021 - 1
'A fascinating, inspiring journey' - Meredith Tax, author of  A Road Unforeseen Kurdistan has had a tumultuous history, and the women who lived there have experienced life like no other. From Saddam Hussein’s reign of terror beginning in the 1960s, to the fight against ISIS today, violence, revolution, and questions around identity, agency, survival, and resistance have been at the forefront of women’s lives for decades. This book is a collection of these women’s stories written in their own words. Each story reveals a tapestry of experiences, including political activism under Saddam and armed resistance in Rojava’s PKK and YPG and Komala in Rojhalat. This is in addition to experiences of FGM and overcoming victimhood, life under extreme conservatism, as well as a look into the work of artists, poets, novelists, and performers whose work represents a complicated relationship with Kurdistan. These rich and nuanced insights come from a group of women from a nation without a state, who are now scattered across the world. Collectively, they take the reader on a journey that will inspire feminist, anti-fascist, and anti-racist people across the world.
Lizzie Borden Seven Stories Press 2022 - 12
Illuminating accounts of how stripping and sex work informs writers’ experiences of friendship, motherhood, teaching, working, creating art, and activism.

No one knows more than strippers about being looked at: as objects of desire, objects of curiosity, as angels or Jezebels or hookers with hearts of gold. In this anthology, twenty-three dancers whose careers span decades, geographies, and identities demand to be seen. Through stories from first nights on the job to the day they hung up their sky-high heels—or decided they never will—these writers offer glimpses into lives of camaraderie and celebration, joy, pride, despair, frustration, self-doubt, and fear.

Their unfiltered perspectives on their lives, onstage and off, are a powerful counternarrative to the whorephobia that shrouds the conventional portrayals of strippers in crime movies, TV shows, music videos, newspaper articles, and legislative debates. Each of these illuminating essays and interviews peels away tired myths and salacious speculation and presents the naked truth: that sex work is real work and strippers are real people.

The Sociological Imagination

The Big Picture: A Sociology Primer

In Defiance of Boundaries: Anarchism in Latin American History [图书] Goodreads
University Press of Florida 2015 - 9
Choice Outstanding Academic Title “A pioneering collection of essays on the world of anarchists, anarcho-syndicalists and libertarian thinkers in Latin America.”—Barry Carr, coeditor of The New Latin American Cracks in the Empire

“An important contribution to a recent trend which sees anarchism not as derived from a European center but as a genuine Latin American phenomenon.”—Bert Altena, coeditor of Reassessing the Transnational Scales of Analysis in Anarchist and Syndicalist Studies

“Thoughtful, well-researched, and well-written. As a collection, this goes a long way to furthering our understanding not just of anarchism in Latin America, but of anarchism more generally.”—Mark Leier, author of The Creative Passion .

In this groundbreaking collection of essays, anarchism in Latin America becomes much more than a prelude to populist and socialist movements. The contributors illustrate a much more vast, differentiated, and active anarchist presence in the region that evolved on simultaneous—transnational, national, regional, and local—fronts.

Representing a new wave of transnational scholarship, these essays examine urban and rural movements, indigenous resistance, race, gender, sexuality, and social and educational experimentation. They offer a variety of perspectives on anarchism’s role in shaping ideas about nationalism, identity, organized labor, and counterculture across a wide swath of Latin America.
The Trouble with White Women [
Kyla Schuller PublicAffairs 2021 - 10
An incisive history of self-serving white feminists and the inspiring women who’ve continually defied them

Women including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Sanger, and Sheryl Sandberg are commonly celebrated as leaders of feminism. Yet they have fought for the few, not the many. As award-winning scholar Kyla Schuller argues, their white feminist politics dispossess the most marginalized to liberate themselves.

In The Trouble with White Women, Schuller brings to life the two-hundred-year counter history of Black, Indigenous, Latina, poor, queer, and trans women pushing back against white feminists and uniting to dismantle systemic injustice. These feminist heroes such as Frances Harper, Harriet Jacobs, and Pauli Murray have created an anti-racist feminism for all. But we don’t speak their names and we don’t know their legacies. Unaware of these intersectional leaders, feminists have been led down the same dead-end alleys generation after generation, often working within the structures of racism, capitalism, homophobia, and transphobia rather than against them.

Building a more just feminist politics for today requires a reawakening, a return to the movement’s genuine vanguards and visionaries. Their compelling stories, campaigns, and conflicts reveal the true potential of feminist liberation. An Entropy Magazine Best Nonfiction Book of 2020-2021,The Trouble with White Women gives feminists today the tools to fight for the flourishing of all.
