A thousand-year-old snake that has transformed itself into a human, Madame White Snake (Choe Eun-hui), falls in love with a young pharmacist named Heo-Seon. Although they encounter difficulties, they are wed, and their love for each other does not change. However, Beophaeseonsa (a Zen priest) and Gwaneumbosal (the Buddhist goddess of mercy) order Madame White Snake, who had transformed into human without being granted permission to do so, to return back to the world of the gods before July 7. Grieving, she prepares to say goodbye to her beloved husband. But before she can return to the world of the gods in time, she falls into a trap set by Dae-yun (Choe Sam), who is attracted to her. Because of the trap, she is not able to keep the promised deadline, and ends up risking her life to save her husband.

On the day she matriculates in college, Lee-hwa (Jang Mi-hee) meets Yo-sub, a rich man's son who has been sending her anonymous love letters. She accompanies him to his father's vacation house in Cheongpyeong. When Yo-sub tries to take her into his arms, Lee-hwa rejects him and leaves the house. Despondent at being turned down by Lee-hwa, Yo-sub commits suicide, and Lee-hwa resolves never to reject a man who needs her. She falls in love with Wu Suk-gi (Kim Chu-ryeon), a college newspaper reporter involved in student activism. Her meeting with Suk-gi opens her eyes to social consciousness. But with only a week to go before the end of his military service, Suk-gi dies in a car accident. Several years later, Lee-hwa runs into her high school teacher Heo Min (Shin Seong-il). She gives her body as consolation to Min, who has been living a lonely and solitary life since his divorce. But when he asks her to marry him, she turns him down, creates an opportunity for him to reunite with his ex-wife, and departs.

Summer, 1983. The entire nation is glued to their television sets as KBS airs a special live broadcast dedicated to reuniting family members who were separated during the Korean War. Hwa-young (Kim Jee-mi), who has been keeping a prosperous and harmonious household, decides to search for her lost son, at the recommendation of her husband (Jeon Mu-song). On the way to the TV station, Hwa-young begins to reminisce about the past. At the end of Japan's occupation of Korea, Hwa-young's family moves to a small village called Kilsodeum, in Hwanghae-do. Hwa-young (Lee Sang-a) soon becomes an orphan, and is taken in by her father's friend, Kim Byung-do. She falls in love with his son Dong-jin (Kim Jung-suk), who treats her with warmth and affection. One rainy day, Hwa-young and Dong-jin consummate their love and Hwa-young gives birth to a child. But the Korean War breaks out and their respective fates take them away from each other. While looking for her son in the rendezvous plaza outside the TV station, Hwa-young reunites with Dong-jin (Shin Seong-il), who has been waiting for her all his life at the expense of the family he built with the daughter (Oh Mi-yeon) of the man who saved his life. The two of them run into Seok-chul (Han Ji-il), a man who has been searching for his parents, and sense that he is their lost son. They go to visit him, but his rude behavior the product of a life spent in the gutters of society causes them to feel a sense of estrangement. Seok-chul's scar and a DNA test virtually confirm that he is their son, but Hwa-young turns her back on him, saying that she will not believe anything less than proofpositive of his parentage. Dong-jin turns away also, as he tosses Hwa-young's contact information in the garbage. As she drives along the road, Hwa-young stops her car for a moment and weeps, but soon continues on her way.

Once a bright and innocent girl, Gyeong-a (Lee Ahn-sook) overcomes the pain of being abandoned by her first love and becomes the second wife of a middle-aged man named Lee An-jun (Yoon Il-bong). But Yoon has a history of having driven his first wife to suicide through his pathological suspicions about her fidelity. Gyeong-a, who once had an abortion, is cast out by Lee when her past comes to light. She takes to drink, and is degraded to the level of a bar hostess by Dong-hyeok (Baek Il-seop). Then she meets an artist named Mun-oh (Shin Seong-il) and moves in with him. They embrace their mutual similarities and, in their own way, enjoy a happy life together. But Dong-hyeok comes looking for Gyeong-a and forces her through blackmail to leave Mun-oh. When she loses herself in severe alcoholism and self-loathing, even Dong-hyeok leaves her side. But Mun-oh discovers her whereabouts and comes to her. After watching her sleep until dawn begins to break, he leaves some money by her pillow and leaves the room. Gyeong-a continues to indulge in the bottle and has meaningless encounters with men. Then, one snowy day, she sets out to her hometown to visit her mother. In the mountains, she takes a sleeping pill and falls asleep in the snow, never to awake. Mun-oh scatters Gyeong-a's ashes on the river and looks back on her difficult life.

One rainy day, Cheol (Shin Seong-il), who is a lowly auto mechanic, and Yeong-hui, who works as a maid at the home of the French ambassador, meet by chance. Cheol has a great desire to succeed in life. He tells Yeong-hui that he is the son of a businessman and pretends to be the owner of a luxury sedan. Attracted by Cheol, Yeong-hui also pretends to be the French ambassador's daughter, and the two promise to meet only on rainy days, when she can hide her real identity by wearing an expensive French raincoat. Cheol and Yeong-hui continue to meet for romantic dates in the rain and their love deepens day by day. However, Yeong-hui's conscience is tortured by the need to keep lying, and she confesses the truth to Cheol. Unable to hide his disappointment and anger at the shock of having his hopes dashed, Cheol abandons Yeong-hui.
