This feature length prime time programme was broadcast on BBC1 to wide critical acclaim. It is 1882 and London is in the grip of spiritualists and séances. Arthur Conan Doyle joins Joseph Bell in a labyrinthine task of investigating a number of corpses found in the River Thames.

Puzzled by the changes, Archer's attentions are soon drawn to her lively friend, Sarah Devlin, a passionate Irish Nationalist. They fall in love, but the Major soon discovers some disturbing aspects about their relationship, which threatens to explode into violence, destruction, and murder.
According to Michael Palin's diaries this was started filmed in early 1987 as a London Weekend Television drama with Palin as Major Archer, directed by 'Charles Struridge'. Other cast included 'Ian Richardson', Rosamund Greenwood, Rachel Kempson, Patience Collier, 'Gwen Nelson', 'Colin Blakley', Timothy Spall and Fiona Victory. Filming was curtailed after a week because of a strike. It was remounted with Ian Charleson as Major Archer.

The film was written and directed by Stuart Urban, and commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Falklands War. The film was closely based on the historical record, and all of the major incidents portrayed were drawn from contemporary accounts by those who took part. Filming took place on the Falkland Islands and at Ealing Studios. Urban is a fluent Spanish-speaker, and plays an uncredited role as the Argentine radio operator.

This is the 1989 British TV production of Terence Rattigan's play "The Winslow Boy". Very rare, not available on DVD that I am aware of. This production is the play, not a movie based on the play. The script is brilliant. All the action occurs in one room, and Rattigan cleverly conveys all that happens elsewhere through the dialogue of the persons in that room at one time or another. The acting is superlative.
Set against the strict codes of conduct and manners of the age, The Winslow Boy is based on a father's fight to clear his son's name after the boy is expelled from Osborne Naval College for stealing a five-shilling postal order. To clear the boy's name was imperative for the family's honour; had they not done so, they would have been shunned by their peers and society. The boy's life would have been wrecked by the stain on his character.

Robin Chapman based his teleplay for the 1986 BBC production Blunt: The Fourth Man on a true story. Ian Richardson plays Sir Anthony Blunt, an above-reproach aristocrat and renowned art expert. In 1951, Blunt sells out his country by helping turncoat British spy Donald MacLean (Michael McStay) escape to Moscow. Blunt's stake in all this intrigue is personal: he is the former gay lover of MacLean's partner in espionage, the notorious Guy Burgess (Anthony Hopkins). The revelation of Blunt's role as the "fourth man" in Britain's most famous modern spy scandal is not made public until 1979. Blunt: The Fourth Man was first telecast in the US over the A&E cable network on July 24, 1987.
