These songs reveal Mahler, that frankly autobiographical composer, at his emotionally most personal. For the Songs of a Wayfarer, the earliest cycle (later extensively revised), the poetry--a sorrowful tale of unrequited young love--is Mahler's own. The music is simple, lyrical, and deeply moving, going from inward grief through suicidal anguish to calm resignation. (Two of the themes reappear in the First Symphony.) In Kindertotenlieder, the poet Friedrich Rückert laments the loss of his children, a tragedy he knew from personal experience. Mahler, however, began composing the music before he became a father; two years after he'd completed it, his older daughter died. The cycle contains some of the most harrowing, wrenching songs in the literature. By contrast, the five other Rückert songs radiate a serene happiness that is like a breath of fresh air. The performances on this disc are breathtaking. Quasthoff's voice seems to become more and more beautiful; pure, velvety and warm, it has an endless range of dynamics, nuances and inflections. He draws the listener in from the first moment. Urmana gives the Rückert songs just the right sunny lightness, soaring up in long, sustained, caressing phrases; she keeps the last song, "Um Mitternacht," from becoming bombastic. Although the Kindertotenlieder are really a bereaved father's lament, von Otter makes them totally convincing. Her voice is dark, intense, and luminous. As for the orchestra, Boulez inspires masterful precision and impeccable balance, letting every line stand out. He turns Mahler's incomparable instrumentation into a tapestry of blazing, glittering colors, unleashing both inward and outward tempests. This record will leave you overwhelmed and heartbroken. --Edith Eisler

two orchestral masterworks , October 18, 2008
By R. Hutchinson "autonomeus"
This is the first U.S. appearance (2008) of this 2003 disc in the DG 20/21 series. It has been available via Amazon.co.uk for years. Better late than never if it's your first chance to hear it!
"Theseus Game" is a fantastic recent work (33'14" -- 2002), a concerto for orchestra, with the thread of melody passed from one soloist to the next, winding through a complex, dynamic orchestral score. This is a live recording of the work's premiere performance in September 2003. The Ensemble Modern is broken into two groups (a la Stockhausen's "Gruppen") with opposing tempos (a la Elliott Carter) and conducted by both Martyn Brabbins and Pierre-Andre Valade. The recorded version lacks the spatial dimension of a live performance, as the players are dispersed, and move about, layering the sounds.
The new live recording of "Earth Dances" (33'22" -- 1985/6) from October, 2001 in Frankfurt, is great, a big improvement over the quite fine earlier recording by the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Dohnanyi (see my review). This new performance was conducted by none other than Pierre Boulez, and performed by an expanded Ensemble Modern. It is tighter, more dynamic, more visceral, and more powerful than ever before.
If you could only hear one disc by Birtwistle, this is the one!

《马勒:少年的魔法号角/布列兹》Conductor Pierre Boulez completes his Mahler discography on Deutsche Grammophon with this all-new recording. As part of the celebration of Boulez's 85th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon has recorded, live in concert with The Cleveland Orchestra, a program that brings together songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, featuring mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená and baritone Christian Gerhaher, with the Adagio from Mahler's incomplete Tenth Symphony. Previous installments in this cycle of recordings have received the highest praise, including Grammy awards in 2003 and 1998 for Symphonies nos. 3 and 9 respectively.

Gil Shaham / Chicago Symphony Orchestra
发布日期 1999-03-09 出版发行: Decca (UMO)
This recording was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Awards for "Best Classical Album" and "Best Instrumental Solosist(s) Performance (with Orchestra)."
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Pierre Boulez, and Béla Bartók have become a winning combination. Three of the Chicago/Boulez Bartók recordings which preceded this one received Grammy Awards. Boulez has developed his relationship with the Chicago over Bartók's music, through countless rehearsals and performances. The results are stunning, time and time again. Here, young violinist Gil Shaham is added to the mix for performances which strike directly to the works' cores.
The Second Concerto comes from the early days of World War II and is a delicious blend of modal touches, Hungarian flavors, and crunchy not-quite-diatonic harmonies. The two Rhapsodies were written almost ten years earlier--originally for violin and piano, but orchestrated soon after--and evoke Hungarian and Romanian dances and tunes. Shaham tears into the solo parts with tremendous energy, and their virtuosic passages fairly fly off the page. Boulez and Chicago back him with power and sensitivity, their command of the music (or, perhaps, the music's command of them) complete. The recordings were made following a series of highly acclaimed concerts in late 1998, and DG would seem to have produced another winner.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard / Tamara Stefanovich 类型: 古典
发布日期 2008-09-08 出版发行: Deutsche Grammophon
This recording completes Pierre Boulez's highly acclaimed survey of Bartók's major orchestral works on Deutsche Grammophon. Boulez has once again gathered an extraordinary team of musicians: Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Pierre-Laurent Aimard--with his long-term recital partner Tamara Stefanovich--and two of the world's most esteemed ensembles: the Berliner Philharmoniker and London Symphony Orchestra. These all-new recordings present less well-known works by the Hungarian composer in riveting performances that will surely become benchmarks. DG exclusive artist Aimard teams up with Boulez in an intensely powerful and thoughtful performance.
