L’empire galactique des Tyrannis comprend des dizaines de mondes, dont la Terre. Or c’est sur Terre, justement, que Biron Farrill, le fils d’un de leurs principaux opposants qu’ils ont assassiné, recherche un document mythique qui pourrait mettre fin au règne des despotes. Quand on attente à sa vie, Farrill doit cependant fuir pour se rendre sur Lingane, la seule planète où s’organise la résistance contre Tyrann. Là, il entend parler d’une mystérieuse planète, sur laquelle une armée de rebelles attendrait de reconquérir la galaxie…

On l'a retrouvé nu, amnésique et balbutiant. Ça n'a pas intéressé les Patrouilleurs. Ils n'ont même pas fait un rapport sur l'incident. Alors, les gens l'ont appelé Rik. Rik le Dingue. Et ils l'ont confié à Lona, la petite paysanne. Elle lui a fait faire ses premiers pas et voici qu'il se souvient. Rik semble détenir une information capitale, tout au fond de sa mémoire détruite. Tout le monde va mourir. Tous les habitants de la planète Florina. Car il y a des courants dans l’espace. Les étoiles sont secouées par de grandes marées stellaires. Qui pourra sauver Florina ? D'autant que les habitants aimeraient bien se débarrasser des Sarkites qui les ont colonisés. Faut-il pour autant appeler Trantor à l'aide et changer un tyran contre un autre ?

On retrouve dans ce roman quelques éléments précurseurs du cycle de "Fondation". C’est en quelque sorte un prélude à l’épopée de Trantor dans cet Empire galactique qui compte plus de 20 millions de mondes.

Tout le monde connaît le nom d'Hari Seldon. Depuis des milliers d'années. On n'imagine même plus que ce personnage légendaire a été un homme ; qu'il y eut un temps reculé où il venait à peine d'inventer la psychohistoire et où il n'y voyait qu'une pure spéculation, sans applications pratiques...

Mais dès qu'il fit sa communication, tout le monde comprit. La psychohistoire ne pouvait pas prédire l'avenir ? Les politiques s'en moquaient ! Ce qui comptait pour eux, c'est que les gens allaient y croire. Ensuite, les équations diraient ce qu'on leur ferait dire. Et si Seldon n'était pas d'accord, tant pis pour lui !

Alors le jeune chercheur s'enfuit en compagnie d'une belle historienne, Dors Venabili. Il sillonna les dédales souterrains de la planète Trantor, capitale de l'Empire Galactique, toujours traqué par ceux qui voulaient contrôler sa découverte. Et ce qu'il vit le stupéfia. La ville géante se désagrégeait. Partout s'étaient constituées des communautés isolées, farouchement attachées à leur autonomie. Un terrain idéal pour affiner son modèle et formuler l'avenir inquiétant qui se dessinait sous ses yeux.

Était-il trop tard pour éviter la catastrophe ? Peut-être y avait-il une chance d'agir...

L'univers uni, c'est fini. L'Empire galactique se désagrège. Trente mille ans de chaos sont au programme. Et moi, j'en ai trop fait et je suis las.
