This spring 16 timeless operas join the series including Verdi's Aida, Puccini's La Rondine, and Gounod's Romeo and Juliet. This collection of Francis Poulenc recordings is highly unusual, in that it features not only Poulenc’s music played by his most famous contemporaries, but also the composer himself playing his own works.
The extracts in which he accompanies Denise Duval in 1959 at the Salle Gaveau have already been published as a bonus in the Classic Archive series, but it seemed appropriate to use them again, this time in their original context — the edition of the television programme Jeunesses Musicales de France devoted to Poulenc — in which the composer talks about his works and replies to questions from the audience with his characteristic wit, humour and warmth.
The DVD also contains nearly fifteen minutes of previously unpublished discussion with the composer, plus a recording in which Poulenc accompanies the great flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal for a magnificent Cantilene from the Sonata for Flute and Piano, a supreme masterpiece also featured in its entirety, as performed in 1963 with Robert Veyron-Lacroix on piano. The extracts from La Courte-Paille (The Short Straw) are republished here, with the addition of a brief introduction by Poulenc, and the DVD also includes another master work which demonstrates what a great pianist Francis Poulenc was, his Concerto for Two Pianos, filmed with his friend and fellow-conspirator Jacques Février and his “favourite” conductor Georges Prêtre three months before the composer’s death.
The DVD also presents footage shot during the year after Poulenc’s death, with performances by members of Poulenc’s inner circle such as Jacques Février and Gabriel Tacchino in the solo piano works, the great French baritone Gabriel Bacquier, especially in his element in some of these melodies, or Maurice Gendron, who performs the Serenade for Cello and Piano he himself transcribed. The crowning glory comes from a slightly later period, with the Concerto for Organ, String Orchestra and Timpani filmed in concert at the Maison de la Radio in Paris, conducted by Georges Prêtre and performed by the great organist Jean-Jacques Grünenwald, nowadays unjustly forgotten. A shadow hangs over this fantastic collection, in the shape of the great Pierre Bernac, whose recital with Poulenc was filmed in 1958, but has sadly now been lost.
