Douglas Adams a relevé le défi en publiant, à partir d'un feuilleton radiophonique, une série de romans drôles, du moins pour ceux qui goûtent un certain type d'humour anglais. Lorsque débute Le Dernier Restaurant avant la fin du monde , Arthur Accroc apprend que sa maison va être détruite au profit d'une déviation ; il s'allonge alors devant le bulldozer chargé de raser son domicile avec l'aide de son ami Ford Escort, qui l'entraîne à découvrir les galaxies et ses étranges extraterrestres tels les Jeuhtlavédis,
de petites créatures bleues munies de plus de cinquante bras chacune, ce qui leur vaut ce trait unique d'être les premiers êtres de toute l'histoire à avoir inventé le déodorant corporel avant la roue.
Adams a souvent des trouvailles comme cette scène où, au restaurant, un bovin programmé se présente comme "le Plat du jour" et demande aux convives quel morceau ils veulent manger :

-Mais c'est absolument horrible, s'exclama Arthur. Voilà la chose la plus révoltante que j'aie jamais entendue.
-Où est le problème, Terrien ? dit Zappy dont l'attention s'était à présent reportée sur l'énorme croupe dodue de la bête.
-Simplement que je n'ai pas envie de manger un animal planté devant moi, même s'il m'y invite , dit Arthur. Je trouve ça cruel.
-Ca vaut toujours mieux que de bouffer un animal qui n'en a pas envie, remarqua Zappy.
