It is a sequel to Cigars of the Pharaoh, with Tintin continuing his struggle against a major gang of drug smugglers. Then one day a Chinese man comes to meet him but he is hit by a dart dipped in a poison which causes madness. He just had the time to tell him that someone going by the name of Mitsuhirato wants to meet him in Shanghai. Tintin travels to Shanghai, China, where he is awaited by the assassins of the opium consortium.

Having encountered Al Capone's gangsters in his last adventure, Tintin is sent to Chicago, Illinois to clean up the city's criminals. He is captured by gangsters several times. However, relying on his wisdom and bravery, Tintin overpowers gansters.

In the previous adventure, The Secret of the Unicorn, Tintin and Captain Haddock discover three parchments revealing the location of the Unicorn, a 17th century navy ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor Sir Francis Haddock. The Unicorn was scuttled by Sir Francis while battling the pirate Red Rackham for his treasure. Tintin and Haddock believe that the pirate's treasure is in the remains of the sunken Unicorn and they hire a fishing trawler, the Sirius, to search for the treasure.

Un soir d’orage, il se passe des événements étranges au château de Moulinsart… Des verres, des fenêtres et des vases se brisent sans raison apparente. Le phénomène étrange va jusqu’à briser les vitres d’une voiture passant devant la grille…
Quelques jours plus tard, Tournesol doit partir pour Genève afin d’assister à un congrès de physique nucléaire. Dés lors le phénomène s’arrête et plus aucun verre ne se brise. Très vite Tintin et Haddock font la relation entre les verres cassés et Tournesol…
Tintin et Haddock décident donc d’aller voir dans le laboratoire de Tournesol. Ils y trouvent une drôle de machine, ainsi que de nombreux débris de verre confirmant leur hypothèse. Mais à ce moment ils sont bousculés par un homme étrange, qui s’échappe mais qui laisse derrière lui un paquet de cigarettes sur lequel est inscrit le nom de l’hôtel où doit descendre Tournesol….

Tintin and his dog Snowy are on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea when they meet Dr Sarcophagus, an Egyptologist who owns a papyrus that he believes will lead him to the undiscovered tomb of the Pharaoh Kih-Oskh (a pun on kiosk, a stand for the sale of petty merchandises such as newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, beverages and/or street foods). He invites Tintin to accompany him. It is just because of the papyrus that they traced a drug-dealing gang.

Alors qu'il est toujours l'hôte du Maharadjah, Tintin reçoit la visited'un chinois qui doit lui dire quelque chose de très important. Mais au moment de parler, le chinois est touché par une fléchette de poison qui rend fou. Avant de sombrer dans la démence, le malheureux à le temps de prononcer deux choses: "Shangaï" et "Mitsuhirato".
Tintin, désireux de faire la lumière sur ce nouveau mystère, décide donc de se rendre au Japon. Durant les premiers jours de son voyage, il manque plusieurs fois de se faire tuer, mais un jeune chinois semble veiller sur lui, et lui évites la mort. Tintin finit par rencontrer Mitsuhirato, qui lui certifie avoir envoyé un émissaire pour le prévenir de rester auprès du Maharadjah.
Mais Mitsuhirato n'est-il pas tout simplement un fieffé menteur? Tintin décide d'enquêter.
