For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland, and they expect these summers will go on for ever. For the children, it is an earthly Paradise. In this, her most autobiographical novel, Virginia Woolf captures the intensity of childhood longing and delight, and the shifting complexity of adult relationships. From an acute awareness of transience, she creates and enduring work of art.

The tale of Jacob Flanders, a lonely young man unable to reconcile his love of classical culture with the chaotic reality of World War I society, unfolds in a series of brief impressions and conversations, internal monologues, and letters. A sensitive examination of character development and the meaning of life, this 1922 novel features first-rate examples of Woolf’s influential techniques.

This collection shows Woolf’s genius as a critic and essayist: as well as displaying her perceptive understanding of writers and their work, it also offers us an important insight into her creative mind.

"Jacob's Room" is the third novel by Virginia Woolf, first published in 1922. It centres, in a very ambivalent way, around the life story of the protagonist Jacob Flanders. Set in pre-war England, the novel begins in Jacob's childhood and follows him through college at Cambridge, and then into adulthood. The story is told mainly through the perspectives of the women in Jacob's life, including the repressed upper-middle-class Clara Durrant and the uninhibited young art student Florinda. His time in London forms a large part of the story. Towards the end of the novel he travels to Italy, then Greece... "Jacob's Room" is a departure from Woolf's earlier two novels, "The Voyage Out" (1915) and "Night and Day" (1919), which are more conventional in form. It is seen as an important modernist text.

Virginia Woolf displays genuine humanity and concern for the experiences that enrich and stultify existence. Society hostess, Clarissa Dalloway is giving a party and her thoughts on that one day, and the interior monologues of others with interwoven lives reveal the characters of the central protagonists.
To the Lighthouse is the most autobiographical of Virginia Woolf's novels. Based on her early experiences, it touches on childhood and children's perceptions and desires. It is at its most trenchant when exploring adult relationships and the changing class-structure in the period spanning the Great War.
Orlando, 'the longest and most charming love letter in literature', playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf's close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West.
'I am writing to a rhythm and not to a plot', said Woolf of The Waves. Regarded as one of her greatest and most original works, it conveys the rhythms of life in synchrony with the cycle of nature and the passage of time'.

Virginia Woolf received three separate requests for a guinea--one for a women's college building fund, one for a society promoting employment for professional women, and one to help prevent war.
This book is an answer to these requests--and as Wolfe examines the three causes and points out that they are inseparably the same, she declares a new tactic of feminine purpose.

小說中的雷姆塞先生與雷姆塞太太脫胎於吳爾芙的父母。吳爾芙的父親在聖艾芙斯購置了一棟別墅，每年夏天前往度假，直到她母親過世。所以吳爾芙在十三歲前每年都度過一段歡樂的假期，也在她心中留下深刻的印象。與小說中一樣，別墅旁邊就是海灣，海中小島也真的有一座燈塔。吳爾芙十歲時編過一個故事，就是《燈塔行》的雛形。
