Comics reading has been an understudied experience despite its potential to enrich our exploration of reading in our currently saturated media landscape. This Element is based on seventeen in-depth interviews with teens and young adults who describe themselves as readers of comics for pleasure. These interviews provide insights about how comics reading evolves with the readers and what they consider a good or bad reading experience. Special attention is paid to the place of female readers in the comics community and material aspects of reading. From these readers, one begins to understand why comics reading is something that young people do not 'grow out of' but an experience that they 'grow with'.

Since classical antiquity, artists have rendered images in painting and sculpture that are so highly mimetic as to be nearly lifelike. Within this long history of strikingly lifelike images, works produced during the Italian renaissance are of special interest. During the sixteenth century, the critical language describing such works of art was codified. This same period witnessed the advent of early modern medicine and anatomical science. As art critics and theorists discussed the vivid immediacy and illusionist potency of art works in terms of aliveness, physicians such as Andreas Vasalius and Realdo Columbo investigated aliveness as a physiological condition of being, and particularly the nature of the soul. Bringing together a wealth of research and ideas from the histories of art, medicine, and natural philosophy, this book demonstrates the significance of lifelikeness for contemporaries and also considers the implications of claims that artwork is 'a living thing.'

This 1988 book is an English translation of the major political works of Benjamin Constant, one of the most important of modern French political theorists and writers. A Swiss protestant by birth, Constant was a prominent figure in French political life in the aftermath of the revolution of 1789, and a leading member of the liberal opposition to Napoleon and, subsequently, to the restored Bourbon monarchy. Criminal Defense in China studies empirically the everyday work and political mobilization of defense lawyers in China. It builds upon 329 interviews across China, and other social science methods, to investigate and analyze the interweaving of politics and practice in five segments of the practicing criminal defense bar in China from 2005 to 2015.
