Ellen Taaffe Zwilich was born in Miami, Florida, on April 30, 1939. She learned to play piano, trumpet, and violin, her principal instrument, which she studied with Richard Burgin and Ivan Galamian. She later studied music at Florida State University, where she came into contact with Ernst von Dohnanyi, the great Hungarian pianist of the old European school; and she took degrees at Juilliard, where her principal composition teachers were Elliott Carter and Roger Sessions.
Pierre Boulez introduced her Symposium (1973) with the Juilliard Orchestra, but her String Quartet 1974, which had its conspicuously successful premiere at the ISCM World Music Days in Boston in 1976, probably launched her reputation. Since then she has produced solo works, chamber music of numerous kinds, and music for orchestra. In 1983 she won the Pulitzer Prize for her Symphony No. 1 (Three Movements for Orchestra); she was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in music.
Prologue and Variations for string orchestra was commissioned by the Chattanooga Symphony, which gave the first performance under Richard Cormier on April 10, 1984. In her remarks on this piece, the composer also spoke of her wish to celebrate "the special sonorities, character, and expressiveness of the string orchestra"; qualities her extensive experience as a violinist taught her well.
Celebration for orchestra is an overture commissioned by the Indianapolis Symphony on the occasion of the inaugural concerts in its new home, the Circle Theatre; John Nelson led the premiere on October 12, 1984. About this work Ms. Zwilich wrote: "In writing this work I was motivated by three complementary goals. First, I wanted to celebrate a joyous and historic occasion with all its inspiring symbolism of beginning and renewal. My second goal was to write a kind of "toccata" or test-piece for the new Circle Theatre. Like an eighteenth-century organ toccata, Celebration for orchestra offers a wide variety of sounds, in this case from very soft to very loud (and many shades in between), and from very low to very high, and from legato to staccato. Finally I wanted to celebrate the orchestra itself, which is, after all, the centerpiece of the occasion."

Alexia Bloch argues that the mobility of women is marked not only by risks but also by personal and social transformation as migration fundamentally reshapes women's emotional worlds and aspirations.
Bloch documents how, as women have crossed borders between the former Soviet Union and Turkey since the early 1990s, they have forged new forms of intimacy in their households in Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, but also in Istanbul, where they often work for years on end. Sex, Love, and Migration takes as its subject the lives of post-Soviet migrant women employed in three distinct spheres—sex work, the garment trade, and domestic work. Bloch challenges us to decouple images of women on the move from simple assumptions about danger, victimization, and trafficking. She redirects our attention to the aspirations and lives of women who, despite myriad impediments, move between global capitalist centers and their home communities.

《现代汉语虚词研究方法论》:我自1960年于北京大学中文系汉语专业毕业留校任教以来,一直从事现代汉语的教学研究工作。“文革”后曾进行过一段汉语双音节词的研究,撰写发表了《先秦复音词初探》(《北京大学学报》1980年第5期、1981年第1期连载)。从1981年开始,我承担中文系汉语专业本科生高年级的“现代汉语虚词研究”专题课,同时给外国留学生也开设了“现代汉语虚词”专题课,从此我的主要精力转入了现代汉语虚词的教学研究工作,直至现在。虚词在语言中的作用,特别是在汉语中的作用,前人已经谈得很多。虚词类似人体的经络,在语言中,特别是在汉语中有着极为重要的地位,这几乎已成为汉语语法学界的共识。语言实践告诉我们,无论是外国人还是中国人,虚词运用不当是常见的语言毛病。怎么让同学们准确了解和掌握汉语虚词的意义和用法?怎么让同学们自己去发现和纠正在虚词使用上的毛病?怎么让同学们上了这门课之后,不只了解我们讲过的某些虚词的意义和用法,而且能从中具体感悟到分析汉语虚词的思路和方法,当自己面对虚词使用的具体语言事实时,能分析、总结、描写某个虚词的语法意义和使用规则?这些都是我承担现代汉语虚词研究教学任务以来一直在思考的问题。我得设法给学生一把怎么准确了解虚词、切实掌握虚词、正确运用虚词的“钥匙”。为了能给学生这把“钥匙”,我自己先尝试对现代汉语虚词进行分析和研究,同时要求学生做大量思考性的练习(每学期7—8次),目的是要促使学生自己去找资料,动脑筋思考问题,从而培养学生面对具体的语言事实发现问题、分析问题、解决问题的研究能力。就这样,二十多年来,我一边教学,一边研究,研究所得就及时补充到教学内容中去,而在教学过程中同学提出的问题、同学在作业中发表的看法和出现的错误,又反过来促使我去进一步思考、研究。在这样的师生互动中,研究不断推进,对怎么研究现代汉语虚词的认识不断深化和积累,我的讲稿也换了一本又一本。二十多年的课上下来,每一届学生,无论是中国学生还是外国留学生,都觉得上这个课有用,有收获,学到了知识,更学到了方法;而这让我感到安慰。把研究所得写成书,这我得感谢商务印书馆的张万起先生。早在十多年前,他得知我在讲授“现代汉语虚词研究”,就约我写一本有关现代汉语虚词的书。张万起年岁比我略大一些,但他是我的学弟(我是1955级语言班的,他是1957级语言班的),并曾经在“大跃进”的年代一起集体编写过《现代汉语虚词例释》,所以不好推辞。但我迟迟没有如约交稿,好在他不催,一直说“你什么时候写好,就什么时候交给我”,这使我没有压力,可以慢慢想,慢慢动笔。想什么呢?主要在想到底要写成一本什么样的书。最后决定,还是把交给学生的那把“钥匙”变成文字,以求教于同仁,并希望能对我们的现代汉语虚词研究有所裨益。

《杜亚泉文存》主要内容:杜亚泉,1873年(同治十二年)生于浙江绍兴府山阴县伧塘乡(今上虞市长塘)。原名炜孙,字秋帆,又署伧父。少时刻苦自修,精于历算,通日语,长于理化、矿物及动植诸科。他的治学道路颇曲折,青少年时,即觉帖括非所学,改治训诂,甲午后,又觉训诂无裨实用,再改学历算。1898年应蔡元培之聘,任绍兴中西学堂算学教员。越二年,为提倡科学,培养人才,创办亚泉学馆(后改为普通学书室),同时出版《亚泉杂志》。
