Some artists spend most of their careers to find their musical home while others get there early. Sophie Zelmani had already found her home when she released her first album and so far she hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to run away from that home. On the eighth of September, Sophie Zelmani releases her eighth album, The Ocean and Me. And this time she and her long time associate, Lasse Halapi, decided to try out something new. Instead of recording the songs one by one they choose to record them in a given order several nights in a row, thereby letting the songs influence each other and grow forth in a spontaneous flow. It all started when Sophie, born in a suburb to Stockholm, was 14. Herstepfather taught her some chords and so she found out she could write songs. “I wrote a song and it felt amazing. I didn’t really think that much about what I was doing, really.” Says Sophie with typically modest.
She recorded a few songs at a local studio and decided to send the demos to three record companies, with no special expectations. Soon
Sony Sweden gave her a phone-call and offered her a record deal. By then she never had played in front of an audience. Sophie started to record
her debut album in 1995. The album is produced and arranged by Lars Halapi, who also plays the guitar on all of the songs. Sophie’s music has
been compared with such great artist as Neil Young, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. The shimmering acoustic guitar in “Always You” bares the spirit of Neil Young and Van Morrison-like sax riffs underlines the song “A Thousand Times”. “I’ll See You (In Another World)” radiates the feeling of
Springsteen; the song is about her stated beliefs in destiny, wisdom of life, goodness, dreams, close relationships and love. Sophie’s music also
has a lot in common with singer/songwriters as Joni Mitchell and Jewel Kilcher.
It all adds up to something unique in the history of Swedish music and Sophie’s music is liked in many of the world’s different parts. Even many

Swedish critics agree on that Sophie’s album is something special. She was awarded a Grammy at the Swedish Grammy awards as best newcomer in 1995, she was also nominated for Best female pop singer. After promoting her album in the US, she finally started to work on her new album in the autumn of 1997. The second album entitled “Precious Burden” came out in 1998 and showed a new side of Sophie Zelmani - her songs were still as simple and convincing but pain colored the music in deep black shades. Top photographer Anton Corbijn shot the cover photos of the album and his dramatic pictures capture the black beauty that had by then become something of a Sophie Zelmani trademark. Since the turbulence of the first album release Sophie Zelmani has started saying
no to interviews she doesn’t feel like giving and she’ll only go on tour for short periods of time. It just weren’t her thing. She wanted to stay home in Stockholm and she wanted to play music, not talk about her songs or spend her time on the road.
If the third album “Time To Kill” was the last, painful phase of a drawn-out farewell, “Sing And Dance” is perhaps the musical memory of a -

Sophie Zelmani is back with a brand new album called “Everywhere”.
2014 is a prolific year for the artist who had already released “Going Home” in March 2014. It consisted of new recordings of songs from earlier records.
“Everywhere” is composed of 12 new songs recorded on her own label – Oh Dear Recording.
Sophie Zelmani has gone back to her roots with a bright new album.
Less sober than her previous album “Soul”, ”Everywhere” puts the emphasis on guitar-vocal songs, folk melodies, delicate harmonies, strings & beautiful backing vocals.
It’s probably one of her best album in many years.
“Everywhere” was released on the 26th of September 2014.

After 18 years, 10 albums, lots of fun and fruitful cooperation with Sony Music I have decided to release my music on my own label – Oh Dear Recordings.
The first release will be Going Home, on March 19th. The album consists of new recordings of songs from earlier records. Songs that have followed me through many years and tours. The brand new song Aftermath is also included.
The reason for re-recording these songs is mainly to reach an audience in countries where my music has not been released. But for those who have my albums there are many favourites in new costumes.

With no musical background and without ever having performed in public, Zelmani rose to the top of the charts with her debut album. In spite of being known as very shy, she soon reached an audience all over Europe and Asia with her tender singer/songwriter country. Zelmani got her first guitar at the age of 14 and was taught some chords by her father. She learned to write songs, and almost ten years later, sent a few tapes to various record companies. Sony replied first and brought her together with producer and guitarist Lars Halapi, known for having worked with Ulf Lundell and Bo Kaspers Orkester. But the very close collaboration with Zelmani, where Halapi had total control over the arrangements, was perhaps his most successful. He gave her self-titled debut a flavor of early Van Morrison, but it was Zelmani who had written all the songs and whose clear and fragile voice gave them an air of honesty. The album entered the charts at number four in the winter of 1995 and soon it had gone gold in Sweden and Japan. Zelmani made a big promotional tour throughout Europe and then went to promote the album in the U.S., where similar female singer/songwriters, like Jewel, were successful. Precious Burden was released in 1998, and if it wasn't the same immediate success as the debut, it got very good reviews. Trying to keep the touring at a minimum, the shy star was not able to avoid fame totally and learned to cope with it more and more. The previous two albums had very much been studio products with Halapi producing and playing many of the instruments, but for the next album, Zelmani formed a real band. Halapi still produced and arranged, and also wrote one track for 1999's Time to Kill LP.

Sophie Zelmani, later raised with the surname Edkvist, is a Swedish singer-songwriter who released her first single in 1995, called "Always You".
