Theoretical neuroscience provides a quantitative basis for describing what nervous systems do, determining how they function, and uncovering the general principles by which they operate. Neither sentimental nor sensationalistic in its portrayal of courtesans and their male patrons, Han's work inquires into the moral and psychological consequences of desire. Han, himself a frequent habitue of Shanghai brothels, reveals a world populated by lonely souls who seek consolation amid the pleasures and decadence of Shanghai's demimonde. He describes the romantic games played by sing-song girls to lure men, as well as the tragic consequences faced by those who unexpectedly fall in love with their customers. Han also tells the stories of male patrons who find themselves emotionally trapped between desire and their sense of propriety. First published in 1892, and made into a film by Hou Hsiao-hsien in 1998, The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai is recognized as a pioneering work of Chinese fiction in its use of psychological realism and its infusion of modernist sensibilities into the traditional genre of courtesan fiction. The novel's stature has grown with the recent discovery of Eileen Chang's previously unknown translation, which was unearthed among her papers at the University of Southern California. Chang, who lived in Shanghai until 1956 when she moved to California and began to write in English, is one of the most acclaimed Chinese writers of the twentieth century.

The music of the medieval, Renaissance, and baroque periods have been repeatedly discarded and rediscovered ever since they were new. An interest in music of the past has been characteristic of a part of the musical world since the early 19th century. The revival of Gregorian chant in the early 19th century; the "Cecilian movement" in later 19th-century Germany seeking to immortalize Palestrina's music as a sound-ideal; Mendelssohn's revival of Bach: these are some of the efforts made in the past to restore still earlier music. In recent years this interest has taken on particular meaning, representing two specific trends: first, a rediscovery of little-known underappreciated repertories, and second, an effort to recover lost performing styles, with the conviction that such music will come to life anew with the right performance. Much has been gained in the 20th century from the study and revival of instruments, playing techniques, and repertories. In this VSI, Thomas Forrest Kelly frames chapters on the forms, techniques, and repertories practices of the medieval, Renaissance, and baroque periods with discussion of why old music has been and should be revived, as well as a short history of early music revivals.

《中国家族法原理》介绍：1．《中国家族法原理》的翻译底本是日文原著《中国家族法原理》昭和51年（公元1976年）8月15日出版的第二版，但个别地方与第二版有所不同。在着手翻译前，滋贺先生对原书个别内容做了进一步修订，因此《中国家族法原理》是根据修订后的内容翻译而成。译书对这些地方不再——注明，凡与原书不同的地方，目前以本译书内容为准。
2．书中有个别日文在翻译时比较难于处理，后决定保持原文不泽。如“持分”、“持分权”、“得分”、“得分权”。“持分”的词义可以译为“份额”；“持分权”可译为“按份共有权”；“得分”可译为“应得的份额”；“得分权”可译为“应得的份额权”。但如果这样译出，则原文表达的涵义和形式会出现问题。“持分”所要表示的含义不仅是“份额”，还指相关的人“每个人都享有的份额”、“相关各方都有份儿”。四个词多少都是基于这一含义而形成的。所以，译为中文后将使原文所要表达的含义受损。同时，原文都是名词，如果翻译时照顾到含义的完备，则译出来的中文大都不成名词的形式而变成了短语或简直像个句子，它们之间的相关性也很难看出来。此外，如日汉辞典通常释“换价”为“估价”，但《中国家族法原理》中出现的“换价处分”一词，含义却是表示卖出财产（如不动产中的土地、房屋）得到钱财，甚至似乎可以扩展到抵押、出典等对财产的处分行为，因此没有合适的中文专用名词对译。考虑到这些情况，我们决定在这里说明这些词的含义，而在书中仍用原文。现代中文里本来有许多名词来源于日语，我
们希望，假如没有其他中文论著使用更合适的对应词，既然都是汉字，那么不妨把这些词直接引进为我们所用，《中国家族法原理》很高兴成为引进这些名词的先行者。
3．原文喜欢用缩略方式引 用一些书籍的书名如《清明集》，为了保持原书风格，使读者能够了解外国学者的注释规范，我们仍保留这样的使用方法，因为所弓！这些书是唯一的，对熟悉这一学术领域的人来说，不会出现误读。不熟悉的，请从书的前面开始读起，也不会有问题。
4．书中引用的日文资料《中国农村惯行调查》，内容是问答式的，问和答的中间用等号“＝”划分开，即等号前是调查人的提问，等号后是被调查人的回答。初次见到这种形式的读者可能会不明所以，故此说明。
5．译书的反边码即页边所加的阿拉伯数字，是原书的页码。原作者在书中注明见某某页的地方，我们本来打算保留作者在这时使用的原汉字页码数字（如一二三）不变，以易于和译书的页码相区别，但这样有违出版局设立的数字使用规范，因此只好用阿拉伯数字。也就是说，原作
者行文中提到见某某页时，读者请到页边码所在的负中去寻找。
6. 原书在章下分节（个别不分为节而直接分一、二、三），注释都在节后，本译书最初考虑为了方便读者，将注释一律变成页下注，而注释的编号不变。但这样处理后，从校样来看，有的注释因内容太多，排版上将出现一些页面空白，不够美观，因此按出版社方面的意见又改为节后注。对这样处理带来的阅读不便谨深表歉意。
7．另一个涉及页边码的，是原书引用中文古籍案例资料时，同时附有对该案例的日文译文或说明，经征求作者意见，确定不再将B文回译成中文，而保留说明部分。但由于没有翻译这些案例的日语译文，相关的页码就没有了或页边码显示两页之间距离很近，这并非译书标页码出现错误，而是无法避免的技术原因。
8．译书中后面所附的滋贺先生的年谱和著述目录，不是原书内容而是译书新加进去的。著述截止到1999年，近三年的没有收录在内。考虑到这是滋贺先生自订的，作为译者对这几年滋贺先生的著述不便加以取舍，好在近年的资料比较容易查到，如日本每年出版的《法制史研究》等书中有论著索引。
