“Free-thinking Nova Scotia composer, musician and visual artist Jay Crocker (aka JOYFULTALK) channels Minimalism, Japanese environmental music, Maghrebian rhythmic modes and other numinous folkways to create his most focused, vibrant work to date. Based on a monumental, kaleidoscopic graphic score, A Separation Of Being is translated from two-dimensional page to trans-dimensional aural life using an array of homemade instruments, crowned with a majestic string arrangement written by Crocker and performed by Polaris and Juno winner Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq, Destroyer).
Visual scores often provoke ideas of openness, interpretation, improv and fluidity. JOYFULTALK’s third album, and second for Constellation, is an altogether different beast. This three-part suite is airtight; interlocking arcs of polyrhythmic deep groove and new minimalism roll out in spellbinding propulsion, the music gathering its warmth from the strings and its peculiarities from Crocker’s bespoke instrumentation and analog clockworks. The separation of being here is not division or rupture, but buoyant freedom through conduction of circulatory energies, marked by flowing melodic rondos of gyrating strings and sonic pointillism. 2010 release, the fifth full length release by Scott Morgan under the Loscil moniker. The album begins and ends with the sound of rain recorded by Scott in his back yard, precipitation being a constant presence in his home city of Vancouver. Many of the other sounds on the album are derived from these same recordings, processed and combined with other harmonic sounds to create the textures and drones. Something completely new to this release would be vocals, of a sort, a first for any Loscil composition, contributed by Daniel Bejar on the final track. Jason Zumpano is the only returning performer from past collaborations, he is responsible for the piano parts. Kim Koch and Robert Sparks make appearances on violin and bass recorder. The cover photos for the album were taken from the backseat of the family car by Scott's newest collaborator, his four year old daughter Sadie.

The Weeknd is the alias of alternative Canadian R&B enigma-turned-pop star A bel Tesfaye, whose aching accounts of emotionally and physically toxic indulgences have translated into mass recognition. The singer and songwriter made his early-2010s breakthrough with morose ballads that seemed to have no designs on mainstream appeal. Within a few years, however, he was at the top of the charts and the rest is history.

Sackville released two albums on Montreal label Mag Wheel through the mid-90s, and then brought these five songs to Constellation as the group was winding down. Sackville made wonderfully damaged roots music, charting a path through country and pop traditions while distilling a wider range of folk, rock and avant influences. The Principles of Science is their most cohesive, accomplished and modern work, driven by Gabe Levine’s vocals and finger-picked acoustic guitar. Violin by band co-founder Genevieve Heistek (Pest 5000) is rich in drones and understated melodic accents. Bassist Harris Newman (Howard North) and guitarist/pianist Ian Ilavsky (Sofa) add to certain tracks, and drummer Pat Conan (Tinker) joins the band on two songs, highlighted by his sparse, expressive playing on “Four-Alarm Fire”. A guest vocal appearance by Jessica Moss on “If His Shadow Moves on the Water” rounds out the cast of Montreal musicians involved in these sessions, which took place at Mom and Pop Sounds and at the Constellation Room in 1998.
