Spirits is the debut album from French For Rabbits. Drawing influence from the wet, windblown landscapes of coastal New Zealand, French for Rabbits - vocalist Brooke Singer and guitarist John Fitzgerald - hail from the remote setting of Waikuku Beach, in NZ’s South Island. While their warm instrumentation lends itself to pleasant comparisons with the Paisley West Coast dream pop of bands like Mazzy Star, French for Rabbits are infused with a cold, brooding gaze evident through carefully decaying beats and glacial guitars akin to Laura Marling or Daughter on opiates.

One of Flying Nun's most critically-praised and well-loved bands of the first ten years. LBGP made their beginnings in 1983 in a Dunedin practice room under a motorcycle shop, using borrowed instruments they didn't really know how to play. But it didn't take these five women long to weave a bit of magic with the pieces of musical puzzle they were starting out with. They layered vocal harmonies, keyboards and even a touch of flute over their trademark Dunedin guitar strum and backbeat to create a distinctive sound of their own. Guitarist Denise Roughan went on to play bass in The 3D's and Ghost Club. This CD features their 3 Flying Nun eps compiled for your listening pleasure (Bewitched, LBGPEP2 and This is This).

Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, a collection of tracks from early and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. The influence of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd is stronger on these early tracks than it would be on subsequent releases, both on the easygoing sing along numbers and the more experimental outings. The highlight (of both the album and the Chills' career) is their New Zealand hit single, the haunting 'Pink Frost'.

Collection of tracks from the influential New Zealand label Flying Nun Records. Taking off from the blank slate of punk's year zero, adding-in a massive dose of disrespect for authority born out of the contemporary and very urgent struggle for social justice, and looking forward to a new New Zealand that was not going to be all about white bread and white men playing rugby, the new music dug deep into its own independent and international tradition, and got very widely, very weirdly, and very seriously psychedelic. This move towards the Psych sound was spearheaded by Hamish Kilgour and his band The Clean. Along the way, he was accompanied by members of several other key groups active in the Christchurch scene, such as The Gordons, The Builders, The Pin Group, Playthings and Victor Dimisich Band, as well as that transplanted southerner Chris Knox. All these people were of an age and disposition to make use of the best of the '60s in the brave new world of independent labels, social upheaval, stronger pot and general post-punk license.
