The fourth album from HTRK, the duo of Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang, arrives five years on from 2014's Psychic 9-5 Club. While some much-loved HTRK hallmarks remain—the combination of space and intimacy, the unmistakable interplay between Yang's guitars and Standish's vocals—Venus in Leo differs markedly in its energy, returning to HTRK’s underground rock past with the stylistic playfulness and variety of a modern mixtape.
Over the soft strums of acoustic guitar, the album’s introduction, “Into the Drama,” posits a theory that “what was once considered self-sabotage could be revisited as being under the influence of Venus in Leo,” Standish explains. Fingerpicked guitar loops rise slowly and fall over a cold, brittle beat. Previously released lovesong “Mentions” finds Standish exploring the lack of physical intimacy in the social media age. Elsewhere, there are emotional highs, like on the kaleidoscopic single “You Know How to Make Me Happy,” which details a suspended state of ecstasy, Standish commending her partner’s conscious efforts to prop her up with compliments. “New Year’s Day” traces a flimsy resolution to get healthier, instantly busted by an evening of debauchery, recalling “the worst possible start to the year with bad friends and bad behavior.” The silver lining is the sunrise: “pink, red, orange, white, peach” Standish repeats as the track laps with a velvety, hypnotic refrain.
Archetypal themes emerge as the band explore the makings of personality. Standish revisits her childhood home in a recurring dream (“Dream Symbol”), a doomed first kiss (“New Year’s Eve”) and high drama (“Venus in Leo”). Recorded more or less live in HTRK’s home studio in the Dandenong Ranges outside of Melbourne, the album’s simple production reveals gorgeous, toned-back arrangements and an evolving, idiosyncratic songcraft.
It's been ten years since HTRK released their breakthrough first album, Marry Me Tonight. The band has undergone profound changes, with the first two albums released amid the deaths of close friend and collaborator Rowland S. Howard and HTRK co-founder Sean Stewart. Psychic 9-5 Club set them on a path of self-discovery, and Venus in Leo marks a spirited new chapter by one of the most distinctive bands of the past decade.

Triumph & Disaster is a post-apocalyptic view on the collapse of the world told like a children’s story and illustrated through the eyes of a mother and her son as they spend one last day on Earth. The music is the narrative for the destruction and tragedy. The words tell the story of love, loss and letting go.
It is a sad love letter about the collapse of the planet as told through a lens of intricate guitars and striking colour. The album deliberates themes and events such as the climate crisis, over consumption, isolation and the loss of love and trust. It is a lament for the planet, all the people on it and the beauty that will be left behind.

On October 22nd 2019 Courtney Barnett performed a unique and special show at the invitation of MTV in her hometown of Melbourne. The “Unplugged” performance features Barnett as you’ve never heard her before, warm, vulnerable and emotional, performing a stirring set of eight songs to an intimate audience including “Depreston”, “Avant Gardener” and “Sunday Roast”. Joined by her usual band Dave Mudie and Bones Sloane, she also enlisted cellist Lucy Waldron.
Barnett made the night even more iconic by inviting some of her favourite musicians to collaborate including legendary songwriter Paul Kelly, angelically-voiced New Zealander Marlon Williams and Milk! Records label-mate Evelyn Ida Morris.
The performances include covers of Leonard Cohen, Archie Roach and Seeker Lover Keeper as well as a never-before-heard original track from Courtney herself titled "Play It On Repeat".

Dusky electro-acoustic minimalists Hessien christen the roster in their first album release since 2010’s ‘Home Is Where The Ghost Is’. The diverse collection of tracks find the duo of Tim Martin (Maps and Diagrams, Black Elk, Atlantis) and Charles Sage (y0t0, The Rothko Chapel) pushing their trademark sound even further out, incorporating wall-of-sound dalliances in electronic textures, repeated motifs and cavernous off-kilter rhythms. Completists will be also happy to note that some rare compilation and unreleased tracks have been included in a single cohesive dialogue for the first time. Editions Mego is proud to release the new album by Australian producer Jasmine Guffond. Developed over a two year period, Microphone Permission is an unsettling musical journey utilising contemporary tools of communication to display Guffond’s ongoing research into online surveillance and sound as a method of investigation.
Source material on Microphone Permission are from various projects Guffond has been working on; a commission to sonify the data of the city of Melbourne, a dance performance about the future sounds of an extinct forest, an installation that sonifies Twitter meta data in real time, a job as a composer for a theatre work about music and feminism by five young female identifying performers in Western Sydney and a site specific installation at the Linachtalsperre dam that employed the harmonic frequencies of electric currents.
The results are a stark, brooding, disorientating journey into a paranoid musical field that sits somewhere between ambient club music and a dystopian soundtrack. Elements of techno, classical music and sound art form a dark intriguing masterwork that questions the nature of invasive, algorithmic and computational listening practices.
For example Microphone Permission refers to the consent we routinely give when installing various apps. onto our smart devices. Inspired by a 2018 scandal in which fans of Spain’s most popular soccer team were effectively turned into unwitting spies by granting the La Liga application microphone permission. No matter which make or model, all smart devices are built with a microphone that is by default, forever listening. Listening in these situations often takes on an algorithmic form that enables tech developers to bypass public response to what is intuitively considered invasive practice, that is, traditional modes of eavesdropping such as using the microphone to listen and record audio.
Guffond’s investigative measures invites the public to experience her new album whilst considering the implications of computational listening.

Rowland S Howard is a legend of Australian rock, a musician whose distinctive style and sound has resonated across the underground-rock landscapes for three decades. His bands have included the Boys Next Door, the Birthday Party, These Immortal Souls, Crime And The City Solution, Honeymoon In Red and his collaborations have involved such dissidents as Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Nick Cave and the late Nikki Sudden.
So it's finally happened I went into the recording studio to record the first song of the new album, a duet with Jonnine from HTRK called "I Know A Girl Called Johnny". I's been so long since I was in the studio to do anything of my own that I was quite disturbed, also everything that could go wrong did. BUT...it turned out really well, Jonnine was just fantastic, I was still writing the music as I taught it to her. So there we are it will happen. I've just got a bit more writing to do and then we are back in. So wish me luck, this record will be great with all the girls and cats and poison you have grown to know and love.

"Cheap Thrills" is a song by Australian singer and songwriter Sia Furler, taken from her seventh studio album This Is Acting (2016). It was written by Sia and Greg Kurstin, and produced by Kurstin. The remix of the track featuring vocals from Sean Paul was released on 11 February 2016 as the second single from This Is Acting. "Cheap Thrills" is a pop song with elements of electropop. The remix of the song featuring Sean Paul contains influences of Jamaican reggae. The song was originally meant for Rihanna's Anti, however after she turned it down Sia decided to keep it and use it for her seventh studio album.
