The Historical Development of Quantum Theory (Historical Development of Quantum Theory Series, Vol 1, Part 1)
Springer 2000
Quantum Theory, together with the principles of special and general relativity, constitute a scientific revolution that has profoundly influenced the way in which we think about the universe and the fundamental forces that govern it. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is a definitive historical study of that scientific work and the human struggles that accompanied it from the beginning. Drawing upon such materials as the resources of the Archives for the History of Quantum Physics, the Niels Bohr Archives, and the archives and scientific correspondence of the principal quantum physicists, as well as Jagdish Mehra's personal discussions over many years with most of the architects of quantum theory, the authors have written a rigorous scientific history of quantum theory in a deeply human context. This multivolume work presents a rich account of an intellectual triumph: a unique analysis of the creative scientific process. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is science, history, and biography, all wrapped in the story of a great human enterprise. Its lessons will be an aid to those working in the sciences and humanities alike.

The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein
Einstein, Albert; Janssen, Michel; Schulmann, Robert 2002 - 5
In the spring of 1919, two British solar eclipse expeditions confirmed the correctness of general relativity theory and propelled Albert Einstein to instant celebrity. Before this major turning point, the majority of Einstein's writings published in this volume dealt with the clarification of general relativistic problems, such as the status of the metric field, the character of gravitational waves, the problem of energy-momentum conservation, and questions of cosmology, such as the nature and size of the universe and the distribution of matter within it. After his rise to international fame, Einstein's publications changed markedly. He faced an increasing demand for popular articles and lectures on relativity, its development and meaning. He also felt compelled to respond to a host of commentators, ranging from skeptical physicists to philosophers trying to reconcile his revolutionary theory with their views. For the first time, he also responded in print to outspoken anti-relativists, some of them fueled by cultural conservatism and, frequently, anti-Semitism. Einstein used his newly won fame to lend prestige to political causes, especially to the reconciliation among European nations and to Zionism. In the early years of Weimar Germany, Einstein spoke out vigorously for the young republic, emphasizing the rights of the individual. He agonized over the misery of the Central Europeans in the grip of starvation and economic collapse, praised the support of individuals and groups such as the Quakers, and championed the cause of Eastern European Jews. His rejection of assimilation, combined with a fierce defense of the right of Jews to higher education, led Einstein to campaign for the establishment of a university in Palestine, the land which he conceived of as a cultural center for all Jews.

Niels Bohr - Collected Works
作者: Aaserud, Finn 编 2008 - 6
With a natural emphasis on his scientific contributions, this limited edition set documents all aspects of Bohr's life and work. Each of the twelve volumes is introduced and edited by a physicist or scholar with particular knowledge of the subject in question and as a bonus a supplementary index volume has now been prepared for the whole set. All volumes are illustrated with rare photos, and Bohr's publications are supplemented with carefully selected manuscripts and correspondence documenting the background for his work and his milieu. "The Niels Bohr Collected Works" constitute a unique resource for collectors and anyone interested in the history of science, and adds up to a fascinating story of the political dedication and social responsibility of one of the major scientists of the twentieth century. It provides the only comprehensive reference on Niels Bohr's life and work including previously unpublished personal documents. It is a special limited edition, and has individually numbered sets for collectors and scientists. It presents an opportunity to purchase and/or access the content of all of the volumes with a newly added cumulative subject index volume. It is published in agreement with and supported by the official Niels Bohr Archive in Denmark.
