列传式的民族志有新意,调查也很有意思,但是第三部分"生活哲学""天人之际""古今之变"的一些分析有些牵强,作者意欲经济、政治、宗教全方面分析方面,材料自然会显得单薄(所以用了大量的文献综述来弥补)。本书"悖论"一词多次出现,这也许就是双面人的本意。悖论的产生自然是因为乡村的转型。既然可以转型,自然农民在悖论中作出了选择,即使"端起碗来吃肉,放下筷子骂娘",对于过去那个时代的态度也是"不想!谁还会想回到那个时代呢?!"在公平和自由之间作出了抉择,然而毕竟只是一种无可奈何。到了新一代的农民,已经"被抉择",所以自然变得颓废犬儒。

《欲望的眩晕:通过电影理解欲望》不是简单的电影批评。正如副标题所示,本书旨在“理解欲望”。为了达到这个目的,作者一方面带我们回顾了几部著名的影片,同时在每一章中各援引一名著名哲学家,比如萨特将为我们阐释《轻蔑》里碧姬•芭铎的臀部,黑格尔为我们分析帕西诺和德尼罗在《盗火线》里的殊死斗争,吉拉尔将为我们讲解《玩具总动员》里的模仿欲,德勒兹为我们展现莎朗•斯通在《赌城风云》中的性感,柏拉图为我们描绘《柏林苍穹下》中的爱之眩晕。

《文化、权力与国家》是以乡村的文化网络为基本结构并考察其功能,这一点和作者第二本书《从国族中拯救历史》(中译本即出)的结构形态似乎相差不少,但他所关注的主题却在继续延伸:现代国家如何构造新的文化,以及民间团体如何“抵抗”从上面来的“攻击”,是第二本书所讨论的一个主要问题。
最重要的一点是,作者在他的著述里贯穿了一种方法论:在考虑话语—主体—制度这三者对历史的建构时应该加入许多外来事物和偶然因素,因为参与主体和主体性构成的不仅有话语,还有外来事物;而由主体构建的制度还应包括制度本身的逻辑和偶然性。因此,所谓“拯救历史”其实是一个方法的问题,而不是一个带有实体的目的。作者认为当民族国家成为现代性之下的历史主体时,其它历史就没有了,因为写历史的不同方法带有不同的目的性——以民族国家为对象的历史自然会排除掉其他可能的历史。所以,他从民族国家中要拯救的不是某种实体,而是一种方法,这种方法表明,我们本来就应该有许多种历史,它们是交织在一起的。对杜赞奇这样的研究者来讲,他最关注的就是在民族国家之外的历史是如何被压下去的,乡村仍然是他的立场。
