Karen莫文蔚25年的音乐惊奇之旅
25年,这世界早已改变成我们无法想像的模样;25年,这个音乐环境也早已被大量分分秒都在更新的数位娱乐习惯更改,而流行天后Karen莫文蔚今年来到她出道的第25年,从华语乐坛全盛时期的尾声,到之后独立创作歌手的兴起、小清新一跃成为歌坛主流、到如今网红当道的分众混杂时代,何以无论市场怎么剧烈的变,我们对她每次出辑还是如此期待?
时间回到1997年,一个来自香港的女生,手上拿着热狗,嘴巴笑得很开,在当时主流观点称不上什么绝世美女,但这非典型的自然率真倒也是歌坛前所未有的模样。然后一首「他不爱我」唱碎了许多人擅长防备的心,完全不拐弯抹角的声线一声声唱着「我知道他不爱我……尽管如此,他还是赢走了我的心」,如刀般锋利的一道道划破我们习惯在感情里不肯承认的结果与软弱,也惊天动地的划开了属于莫文蔚的新时代。
敢大声承认他不爱我,才能真正〔to be做自己〕不是吗?莫文蔚一连在滚石的四张专辑〔to be做自己〕、〔I Say我要说〕、〔You Can你可以〕、〔就是莫文蔚〕,确立了一个新时代独立自主女性的标杆。〔to be做自己〕的销售当年打败众多天王天后,为歌坛投下震撼弹,〔I Say我要说〕持续热卖,传唱的歌持续快速累积,莫文蔚以两张专辑,不到一年时间,就奠定华语乐坛新天后地位。
看莫文蔚的专辑名称,都是充满正面能量。正面能量对莫文蔚来说,绝对不是嘴上谈谈的口号而已,从她怎么面对人生的低潮,怎么将命运扭转奇迹就知道她才是真正正面能量的行动实践者。2007年,莫文蔚与唱片公司合约即将到期,确定不再续约,莫文蔚在非常有限的资源下,非但没有选择草草了事,还卸下天后光环亲力亲为,找了黄金搭档作词人李焯雄和制作人Terry Chan,自己并担任整张专辑谱曲和制作,三个人完成了〔L!VE is...Karen Mok〕(拉活…莫文蔚)专辑,隔年莫文蔚就凭此张专辑获得第十九届金曲奖最佳国语专辑奖,她是香港第一位获得该奖项的女歌手。
那一年,莫文蔚还发生了一件大事。她到台湾进行〔L!VE is...Karen Mok〕专辑宣传时,突然在新歌演唱会的台上宣布,她跟交往多年男友已经分手。媒体一阵兵慌马乱,急着寻找答案,能说的,她在台上说了,至于过程和原因,就留给当事人吧!然后莫文蔚说,那一两年,失去了感情,同时也和公司结束合作,感觉所有的失去同时袭来,她不用低潮来解释,她用「离谱」来形容那段时间的生活,但她有被击垮吗?没有。她能在离谱中翻转自己,那一座金曲奖证明了自己,特别有意义。这才是行动派的正面能量吧?
莫文蔚其实对于媒体来说,算是一个平时很难从她嘴巴挖出什么太个人私事细节的艺人。但话不用多,却总在出其不意的时候,说出一句就足以惊天动地。她可以在新歌发表会的舞台突然宣布恋情告终,也可以在几年后,以〔宝贝〕专辑二度拿下金曲歌后时,在舞台上宣布自己可以结婚了,不仅不是开玩笑的,对象竟然还是17岁时的初恋男友。哇!全场惊声尖叫,这是电影还是童话故事?莫文蔚的舞台人生,人生如戏,甚至是电影都写不出的戏剧张力。分手和结婚,失去和幸福,都在舞台上,都是我们参与过莫文蔚人生的足迹。
说到金曲奖,不得不提莫文蔚创下的纪录。莫文蔚出道至今入围国语女歌手高达7次。2002年凭专辑〔i〕首次夺得金曲歌后,和〔L!VE is...Karen Mok〕专辑获得最佳国语专辑,一样都为香港女歌手第一人。而莫文蔚入围过金曲奖最佳国语专辑奖至今高达6次,是专辑提名次数最多的华语女歌手。截至2015年,莫文蔚以9张专辑入围金曲奖共35项,获奖9项,两者均为目前华语女歌手之最。
许多歌手出片死拼活拼都想和金曲奖沾上一点边,多半却都苦无机运,而莫文蔚却能创下如此傲人的纪录,为何?我想她对于音乐的敏锐、敢于创新的开放心态、和总能和不同创作人擦出令人意想不到的火花等等这些因素都是缺一不可的。莫文蔚回忆有天在台湾中南部跑完签唱会回到台北,下飞机时就收到一首demo,她在机场一听,天啊,激动不已,她知道这首歌一定会中,后来被李焯雄填了词,成为后来的「爱」,而这首歌让作词人李焯雄、作曲人陈晓娟和演唱人莫文蔚,横扫金曲奖,莫文蔚对音乐够敏锐吧?
李宗盛打造许多都会女歌手非常成功,却在莫文蔚身上,让他们遇见另一个自己。「阴天」是两人合作的开端,独属李宗盛念唱式的表达,女歌手里,莫文蔚演技发挥的淋漓尽致,驾驭得最游刃有余,到了﹝十二楼的莫文蔚﹞专辑,李宗盛担纲整张专辑制作,这时莫文蔚才发现,自己从天真活泼的小女生蜕变成可以有点性感的小女人。这张专辑也为李宗盛拿下隔年金曲奖最佳制作人大奖。因为和莫文蔚合作得到奖项的机率,实在高的吓人。
尽管莫文蔚和李宗盛创造出永世流传的经典,莫文蔚却分享一个可能连李宗盛都忘记的小小秘辛。有次滚石香港的高层约了李宗盛到香港,要介绍一位「新人」给他认识,那位新人就是莫文蔚,三人约在香港某家饭店,莫文蔚当天穿着超短裤和靴子,一身英国女生打扮赴约,李宗盛现身,却戴了一个棒球帽,帽沿几乎压低到他的鼻子。这场约,李宗盛从头到尾和莫文蔚零交流,到中场,李宗盛还说自己有事先离开了。莫文蔚当下想,他应该对自己毫无兴趣吧!没想到,才过几天,香港滚石主管就说,大哥说OK了,他们会把合约发过来。莫文蔚高兴之余,也惊讶大哥一眼都没看她就说OK,开玩笑的说,会不会从头到尾都在看我的腿?
一个歌手,即便已是天后,能够屹立在歌坛25年,绝对不会只是一场演唱会无法承载她累积经典歌曲的数量而已。里面需要集结天份、努力和一定程度的幸运。莫文蔚对音乐、戏剧敏锐的天份和细胞,已不必详述。莫文蔚的努力,从她演唱会上不需要提词机就略知一二,她总是这样要求自己,把演唱会内容都熟记到内化到和自己融为一体,才能专注在舞台饱满的表演上。所以看莫文蔚演唱会,总是目不转睛,她一下趴在钢琴上撩人的唱着「阴天」,一下又弹着古筝,和伍佰或李荣浩的电吉他互飙「坚强的理由」,精采啊,有时看得都忘了呼吸,怎么会有时间滑手机?
聊聊莫文蔚的「幸运」吧!莫文蔚觉得自己在音乐路上真的是很有福气的人。25年来,包含新专辑〔我们在中场相遇〕,莫文蔚总共推出过十三张国语专辑,三张粤语专辑,一张英文专辑。十三张国语专辑目前是香港女歌手中之最,且张张都在华语乐坛史上留名。滚石时代和李宗盛、伍佰、张洪量、张震岳、姚谦、林暐哲、周耀辉等才子相遇,创造第一波全盛高潮;后来在Sony Music,有陈晓娟、王力宏、陶喆、李偲菘、林夕、周杰伦、蔡健雅、柯有伦、左安安等新血加入,莫文蔚在这时期获得多次金曲奖肯定;而在自己出品的〔回蔚〕中认识了张亚东,两人进而在之后环球音乐推出的〔宝贝〕中合作,再度为莫文蔚拿下第二座金曲歌后,〔不散,不见〕里则有吴青峰和常石磊创作的加入,还有近年来,在音乐上,给予莫文蔚无限支持的制作人荒井十一,更不能不提,从第一张国语专辑就陪伴莫文蔚至今的金曲作词人李焯雄。
莫文蔚是喜欢新鲜感和创新的双子座,但二十几年来,无论和再多各路大师级创作人合作,李焯雄却始终在她身边不离不弃。莫文蔚当年加盟香港滚石,推出广东专辑〔全身莫文蔚〕,那时李焯雄是滚石的企宣主管;后来李焯雄转到台湾唱片公司任职,莫文蔚也推出首张国语专辑,李焯雄则在她的第一张国语专辑中写了「午夜前的十分钟」这首歌词,这一年也是李焯雄开始写国语词的开始。所以两人的起跑线相同,一路上一起成长,彼此过招。莫文蔚笑说:「他一定是对我偏心的」,李焯雄多年来用文字纪录了莫文蔚生活、情感一切细微的变化,在莫文蔚身上锻练出如今大师级的功力,两人培养出是工作伙伴也是好友的多层次关系。
莫文蔚想起这一路上合作的音乐工作伙伴,有时还是会感性的忍不住哽咽,因为要和那么多那么多有才华的人相遇,是如此不容易的事,更何况,这每一位音乐人与她的结合,总能创造出更令人惊喜的火花,而莫文蔚的演绎也从没让他们失望。

"The Blue Notebooks was originally composed in the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Richter has described it as "a protest album about Iraq, a mediation on violence – both the violence that I had personally experienced around me as a child and the violence of war, at the utter futility of so much armed conflict." The album was recorded about a week after mass protests against the war. It features readings from Franz Kafka's The Blue Octavo Notebooks and Czesław Miłosz's Hymn of the Pearl and Unattainable Earth. Both readings are by the British actress Tilda Swinton."

"Max Richter's 'The Blue Notebooks' is the 4th release on FatCat's 130701 imprint, an outlet for more orchestrated, instrumental material. 'The Blue Notebooks' is Max Richter's second solo album, a distinctive and adventurous work that is beautifully recorded and cinematic in scope. Opening with a text from Franz Kafka over a sparse piano melody, the album moves through gorgeous, heart-wrenching string swells of 'On The Nature Of Daylight' through to sparse but lyrical piano pieces; hazy, swirling atmospherics, avalanche pulse-beats and partially occluded melodies that recall Aphex Twin's SAWII; and to reverberant organ / choir recordings.
Utilising piano, cello, violin and viola, alongside electronic beats (made using a variety of antique electronics and Reaktor), spoken word passages and the occasional field recording, other sounds were generated via old guitar pedals and vocoders. Life affirming music."

Bookended by the airy, flute-laced 'Body Language', produced by Thundercat, and the immaculately orchestrated soul of 'Killer', recorded with The Dap-Kings in New York, it turns through R&B, on the stuttering beats and skanking guitar of 'Miami', punctuated by a spot from BIA, by way of popping funk on 'Just A Stranger', made with her previous collaborator, Steve Lacy. There's the metronomic electro-pop tick of 'In My Dreams', recorded with Damon Albarn, reciprocating the two appearances Uchis made on their recent record and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker lines 'Tomorrow' with a disco strut and melancholic synths. The mainstay influences of golden-era soul remain strong as well, here recalibrated to bemoan infidelity on 'Fool' and rail against corporate vampires on 'Teeth In My Neck'. 7 is our 7th full-length record. At its release, we will have been a band for over 13 years. We have now written and released a total of 77 songs together.
Last year, we released an album of b-sides and rarities. It felt like a good step for us. It helped us clean the creative closet, put the past to bed, and start anew.
Throughout the process of recording 7, our goal was rebirth and rejuvenation. We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically, we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the album’s feel.
In the past, the economics of recording have dictated that we write for a year, go to the studio, and record the entire record as quickly as possible. We have always hated this because by the time the recording happens, a certain excitement about older songs has often been lost. This time, we built a "home" studio, and began all of the songs there. Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about, we would go to a “proper” recording studio and finish recording them there. This way, the amount of time between the original idea and the finished song was pretty short (of the album’s 11 songs, 8 were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles).
7 didn’t have a producer in the traditional sense. We much preferred this, as it felt like the ideas drove the creativity, not any one person’s process. James Barone, who became our live drummer in 2016, played on the entire record. His tastes and the trust we have in him really helped us keep rhythm at the center of a lot of these songs. We also worked with Sonic Boom (Peter Kember). Peter became a great force on this record, in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection.
The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it must be for most artists these days. Looking back, there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and perfect moments, was an endless source (see “L’Inconnue,” “Drunk in LA,” “Woo,” “Girl Of The Year,” “Last Ride”).
In a more general sense, we are interested by the human mind's (and nature’s) tendency to create forces equal and opposite to those present. Thematically, this record often deals with the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny (see “Dark Spring,” “Pay No Mind,” “Lemon Glow,” “Dive,” “Black Car,” “Lose Your Smile”).
The title, 7, itself is simply a number that represents our seventh record. We hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album.
The number 7 does represent some interesting connections in numerology. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look, so 7 feels like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or “semi-first.” Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest level of spirituality, as in "Seventh Heaven.” At our best creative moments, we felt we were channeling some kind of heavy truth, and we sincerely hope the listeners will feel that.

Deafheaven was formed in 2010 by vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. They released of their debut studio album Roads To Judah in 2011 and followed it with scrappy, rabid live shows. It maybe wasn’t obvious in those days, but Deafheaven have always had a knack for desolate and literate romanticism.
This became clear with the release of Sunbather in 2013. "Dream House," the majestic opener from the San Francisco group’s Jack Shirley-produced breakthrough album, focused on growing up poor and wanting more. The album, which found the group a larger listenership, was the sound of two friends finding the right collaborator (in drummer Daniel Tracy) and realizing their potential by creating music that somehow embodied the transitory magic of sunspots drifting across a hardwood floor. Featuring gorgeous pink cover art by Touché Amoré ’s Nick Steinhardt, Sunbather was also the first time Deafheaven knew how to control all aspects of their project. Following the recording of the record, they added guitarist Shiv Mehra and bassist Stephen Clark—each subsequent live set felt like a religious experience for the bigger (and bigger) shows that followed.
A year later, in 2014, the band released From the Kettle Onto the Coil, the precursor to their forthcoming third album, and first for ANTI-, 2015’s New Bermuda. Produced again by Jack Shirley and featuring that expanded lineup of Mehra and Clark, New Bermuda was again art directed by Nick Steinhardt, but instead of pink, the band used a dark oil painting by Allison Shulnik for its cover that depicted what looked like a melting face. The image matched the band’s further deconstructing of metal, which offered a bleaker but no-less-triumphant tapestry. New Bermuda was heavier, sturdier, and more grounded in the dirt than Sunbather. McCoy mentioned the death metal of Dissection, Morbid Angel, and Behemoth, along with Cliff Burton-era Metallica as influences, but as a testament to his and Mehra’s brilliant playing, you can still hear remnants of “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” in the songs. New Bermuda is a kinetic, cathartic collection that mixes beauty and depression, shining lights and suicide. For many, it was the group’s most fully realized offering to date.
Deafheaven’s new fourth album, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, is another revelation. Working with old friends again, the Shirley-produced and Steinhardt-art directed collection gets its title from Graham Greene’s novel The End of the Affair, referencing a moment when someone is looking for love, in all of its imperfection and simple beauty. This sentiment is carried throughout the hazy, yearning romanticism of the record with song titles and words as sumptuous as the sounds around them. It’s a feeling of a loved one growing distant, medicating yourself with empty sex with strangers, and tears in a place faraway from home.
Taking more literary cues, the lyrics to the expansive “Honeycomb” reference seminal Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar, author of the elaborately structured stream-of-conscious novel Hopscotch while another song, "Canary Yellow," includes the line “I have wondered about the language of flowers.” Theres an abundance on Ordinary Corrupt Human Love—layered psychedelic vocals, classic rock riffs, jazzy percussion, a song reminiscent of Slowdive—and it all makes sense within the Deafheaven universe. Piano, always an element of the band’s sound, has a more prominent place here. It drives “You Without End,” which opens with the forlorn spoken word of Nadia Kury, who reads a moment from a short story by Oakland author Tom McElravey depicting the poetry of small, basic moments: you light a joint, look at a mural, burn yourself, and gaze at a surprise flock of geese flying overhead. In addition, Chelsea Wolfe and her regular collaborator Ben Chisolm add vocals and production to the dusky piano piece, “Night People.” Still, it’s all clearly Deafheaven. These songs have forward momentum and upward lift, Clarke’s pained howls and snarls and growls.
Defeat has inspired some of our best art. If you survive something terrible, you surface on the other side, walk toward the light, and come back to life. Everybody deals with hurt, everybody’s been the cause of their own implosions, and everybody has the capacity to overcome and love again. With Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, Deafheaven have found a way to externalize all of this, and in making their most complete record to date, they turn it into a balm, a warm blanket, and a cathartic exorcism.

In 2018, Low will turn twenty-five. Since 1993, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker—the married couple whose heaven-and-earth harmonies have always held the band’s center—have pioneered a subgenre, shrugged off its strictures, recorded a Christmas classic, become a magnetic onstage force, and emerged as one of music’s most steadfast and vital vehicles for pulling light from our darkest emotional recesses. But Low will not commemorate its first quarter-century with mawkish nostalgia or safe runs through songbook favorites. Instead, in faithfully defiant fashion, Low will release its most brazen, abrasive (and, paradoxically, most empowering) album ever: Double Negative, an unflinching eleven-song quest through snarling static and shattering beats that somehow culminates in the brightest pop song of Low’s career.
To make Double Negative, Low reenlisted B.J. Burton, the quietly energetic and adventurous producer who has made records with James Blake, Sylvan Esso, and The Tallest Man on Earth in recent years while working as one of the go-to figures at Bon Iver’s home studio, April Base. Burton recorded Low’s last album, 2015’s Ones and Sixes, at April Base, adding might to many of its beats and squelch and frisson beneath many of its melodies.
This time, though, Sparhawk, Parker, and bassist Steve Garrington knew they wanted to go further with Burton and his palette of sounds, to see what someone who is, as Sparhawk puts it, “a hip-hop guy” could truly do to their music. Rather than obsessively write and rehearse at home in Duluth, Minnesota, they would often head southeast to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, arriving with sketches and ideas that they would work on for days with Burton. Band and producer became collaborative cowriters, building the pieces up and breaking them down and building them again until their purpose and force felt clear. As the world outside seemed to slide deeper into instability, Low repeated this process for the better part of two years, pondering the results during tours and breaks at home. They considered not only how the fragments fit together but also how, in the United States of 2018, they functioned as statements and salves.
Double Negative is, indeed, a record perfectly and painfully suited for our time. Loud and contentious and commanding, Low fights for the world by fighting against it. It begins in pure bedlam, with a beat built from a loop of ruptured noise waging war against the paired voices of Sparhawk and Parker the moment they begin to sing during the massive “Quorum.” For forty minutes, they indulge the battle, trying to be heard amid the noisy grain, sometimes winning and sometimes being tossed toward oblivion. In spite of the mounting noise, Sparhawk and Parker still sing. Or maybe they sing because of the noise. For Low, has there ever really been a difference?
