For my English speaking friends: I picked up this book when I am about to move to Amsterdam. The author tells the story of a person fleeing from the Yugoslav wars and found herself as language professor in Amsterdam. Before reading it I was expecting it to be a light read, something along the lines of observations of Dutch culture. From the very beginning I realized it is way more than that. I was surprised by how deep this book touched me. The complicated relationships and experience of home, trauma from home, language, languages, life in a foreign land, and the pain, from the homeland, within our own people, and within ourselves.

Shevek, a brilliant physicist, decides to take action. He will seek answers, question the unquestionable, and attempt to tear down the walls of hatred that have isolated his planet of anarchists from the rest of the civilized universe. To do this dangerous task will mean giving up his family and possibly his life—Shevek must make the unprecedented journey to the utopian mother planet, Urras, to challenge the complex structures of life and living, and ignite the fires of change.

In the heart of China's Sichuan province, amid the terraced hills of the Yangtze River valley, lies the remote town of Fuling. Like many other small cities in this ever-evolving country, Fuling is heading down a new path of change and growth, which came into remarkably sharp focus when Peter Hessler arrived as a Peace Corps volunteer, marking the first time in more than half a century that the city had an American resident. Hessler taught English and American literature at the local college, but it was his students who taught him about the complex processes of understanding that take place when one is immersed in a radically different society.
Poignant, thoughtful, funny, and enormously compelling, River Town is an unforgettable portrait of a city that is seeking to understand both what it was and what it someday will be.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a genius, the most brilliant musician the world will ever see. But the court of eighteenth-century Vienna doesn’t recognize his talents - only Antonio Salieri, the Court Composer, does, and he is tortured by what he hears. Seething with rage at the genius of this flippant buffoon and suddenly aware of his own mediocrity, Salieri declares war and sets out to destroy the man he sees as God’s instrument on earth. Peter Shaffer’s award-winning play is a rich, exuberant portrayal of a God-like man among mortals, and lives destroyed by envy.

In 1791, they say , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died accusing a rival composer, Antonio Salieri, of having poisoned him.

In 1823, they say , Salieri confessed to that murder.

AMADEUS represents the substance of that confession, made by a desperate Salieri on the last night of his life. He tells it to the audience, who are taken back to the gilded court of Joseph II in rococo Vienna, a place of constant gossip and intrigue, and introduced to a brilliant young musical genius - or, as Salieri puts it, to a "spiteful, sniggering, conceited infantine Mozart!"

This is so beautifully written. I saw the China that I had somewhat forgotten and left behind, with all its beauty, roughness, and dirtiness. I was also surprised by the details of parts of the Chinese history hessler described that I was not aware of.
While I was reading, I kept thinking about my waiguoren friends from DKU and how they might’ve experienced China like Peter hessler. I pictured my American ex-boyfriend as hessler many instances when reading. I came to appreciate and admire their openness and curiosity even more now that I am living abroad. Although of course, being Chinese in Europe is so different from being white American in China.

All About Love 豆瓣 Goodreads
6.6 (10 个评分) 作者: bell hooks Harper Paperbacks 2001 - 1 其它标题: All About Love: New Visions
"The word "love" is most often defined as a noun, yet...we would all love to better if we used it as a verb," writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love . Here, at her most provacative and intensely personel, the renowned scholar, cultural critic, and feminist skewers our view of love as romance. In its place she offers a proactive new ethic for a people and a society bereft with lovelessness. As bell hooks uses her incisive mind and razor-sharp pen to explode th question "What is love?" her answers strike at both the mind and heart. In thirteen concise chapters, hooks examines her own search for emotional connection and society's failure to provide a model for learning to love. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for the individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the "100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life." All About Love is a powerful affirmation of just how profoundly she can.

I find the definition of love referenced throughout the book to be very helpful. Since love is almost seldom mentioned in my family (or the broader society, in a personal context) growing up, I found myself understanding love in its idealized version. Subsequently, I never see the presence of love in my life. Here, Instead of thinking of love as a mysterious feeling or emotion, bell hooks defines love as an action. The devotion to the spiritual growth of oneself and the person one loves. With this definition, I came to realize that I am not without love.
However, during our book club meeting, I found out that like my friend who brought it up, I don’t understand completely what the “spiritual growth” here refers to. I already find the people that I love to be as perfect as they came to be. I see the struggles that they face in their lives, and I hope I can support them to overcome these struggles.
I really liked the honesty in bell hooks’ writing, how she described her family, her relationships, and her friendships. Her discussions on lies, abusive relationships, grief, and death are very interesting.
However, before halfway over the book, I found myself getting tired of her strong statements that sometimes read more like rhetoric than an actual meaningful message.

Empress Dowager Cixi 豆瓣 Goodreads
作者: Jung Chang Knopf 2013 - 10
Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) is the most important woman in Chinese history. She ruled China for decades and brought a medieval empire into the modern age.
At the age of sixteen, in a nationwide selection for royal consorts, Cixi was chosen as one of the emperor’s numerous concubines. When he died in 1861, their five-year-old son succeeded to the throne. Cixi at once launched a palace coup against the regents appointed by her husband and made herself the real ruler of China—behind the throne, literally, with a silk screen separating her from her officials who were all male.
In this groundbreaking biography, Jung Chang vividly describes how Cixi fought against monumental obstacles to change China. Under her the ancient country attained virtually all the attributes of a modern state: industries, railways, electricity, the telegraph and an army and navy with up-to-date weaponry. It was she who abolished gruesome punishments like “death by a thousand cuts” and put an end to foot-binding. She inaugurated women’s liberation and embarked on the path to introduce parliamentary elections to China. Chang comprehensively overturns the conventional view of Cixi as a diehard conservative and cruel despot.
Cixi reigned during extraordinary times and had to deal with a host of major national crises: the Taiping and Boxer rebellions, wars with France and Japan—and an invasion by eight allied powers including Britain, Germany, Russia and the United States. Jung Chang not only records the Empress Dowager’s conduct of domestic and foreign affairs, but also takes the reader into the depths of her splendid Summer Palace and the harem of Beijing’s Forbidden City, where she lived surrounded by eunuchs—one of whom she fell in love, with tragic consequences. The world Chang describes here, in fascinating detail, seems almost unbelievable in its extraordinary mixture of the very old and the very new.
Based on newly available, mostly Chinese, historical documents such as court records, official and private correspondence, diaries and eyewitness accounts, this biography will revolutionize historical thinking about a crucial period in China’s—and the world’s—history. Packed with drama, fast paced and gripping, it is both a panoramic depiction of the birth of modern China and an intimate portrait of a woman: as the concubine to a monarch, as the absolute ruler of a third of the world’s population, and as a unique stateswoman.
