An Engine, Not a Camera
Donald MacKenzie The MIT Press 2006 - 5
In An Engine, Not a Camera, Donald MacKenzie argues that the emergence of modern economic theories of finance affected financial markets in fundamental ways. These new, Nobel Prize-winning theories, based on elegant mathematical models of markets, were not simply external analyses but intrinsic parts of economic processes.

Paraphrasing Milton Friedman, MacKenzie says that economic models are an engine of inquiry rather than a camera to reproduce empirical facts. More than that, the emergence of an authoritative theory of financial markets altered those markets fundamentally. For example, in 1970, there was almost no trading in financial derivatives such as "futures." By June of 2004, derivatives contracts totaling $273 trillion were outstanding worldwide. MacKenzie suggests that this growth could never have happened without the development of theories that gave derivatives legitimacy and explained their complexities.

MacKenzie examines the role played by finance theory in the two most serious crises to hit the world’s financial markets in recent years: the stock market crash of 1987 and the market turmoil that engulfed the hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management in 1998. He also looks at finance theory that is somewhat beyond the mainstream--chaos theorist Benoit Mandelbrot’s model of “wild” randomness. MacKenzie’s pioneering work in the social studies of finance will interest anyone who wants to understand how America’s financial markets have grown into their current form.
Serve the People 豆瓣
Karen Ishizuka Verso 2016 - 3
A narrative history of the movement that turned “Orientals” into Asian Americans
Until the political ferment of the Long Sixties, there were no Asian Americans. There were only isolated communities of mostly Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos lumped together as “Orientals.” Serve the People tells the story of the social and cultural movement that knit these disparate communities into a political identity, the history of how—and why—the double consciousness of Asian America came to be.
At the same time, Karen Ishizuka’s vivid narrative reveals the personal epiphanies and intimate stories of insurgent movers and shakers and ground-level activists alike. Drawing on more than 120 interviews and illustrated with striking images from guerrilla movement publications, the book evokes the feeling of growing up alien in a society rendered in black and white, and recalls the intricate memories and meanings of the Asian American movement. Serve the People paints a panoramic landscape of a radical time, and is destined to become the definitive history of the making of Asian America.
Imperial Citizens
Nadia Kim Stanford University Press 2008 - 6
Asians and Latinos comprise the vast majority of contemporary immigrants to the United States, and their growing presence has complicated America's prevailing White-Black race hierarchy. "Imperial Citizens" uses a global framework to investigate how Asians from U.S.-dominated homelands learn and understand their place along U.S. color lines. With interviews and ethnographic observations of Koreans, the book does what others rarely do: venture to the immigrants' home country and analyze racism there in relation to racial hierarchies in the United States. Attentive to history, the book considers the origins, nature, and extent of racial ideas about Koreans/Asians in relation to White and Black Americans, investigating how immigrants engage these ideas before they depart for the United States, as well as after they arrive. The author shows that contemporary globalization involves not just the flow of capital, but also culture. Ideas about American color lines and citizenship lines have crossed oceans alongside U.S. commodities.

From Duty to Desire
Collier, Jane Fishburne 1997 - 11
In the 1980's, Jane Collier revisited a village in Andalusia, where she and others had conducted fieldwork twenty years earlier, to investigate changes in family relationships and to explore the larger question of the development of a 'modern subjectivity' among the people. Whereas the villagers she met in the sixties stressed the importance of meeting social obligations, the people she interviewed more recently emphasized the need to think for oneself: status concerns in choosing a spouse had apparently been replaced by romantic love, patriarchal authority by partnership marriages, parental demands for obedience by hopes of earning children's affection, mourners' respect for the dead by personal expressions of grief. In each of these areas, the author detected a modern concern for 'producing oneself', which emerged with changes in how villagers experienced social inequality. Collier notes that when inheritance appeared to determine social status, villagers protected family reputations and properties by demonstrating concern for 'what others might say'. Once villagers began participating in the national job market, where individual achievement appeared to determine a worker's income, they focused on realizing their inner abilities and productive capacities. Sensitivity to one's feelings, thoughts, and aptitudes, along with 'rational' assessments of the costs and benefits entailed in 'choosing' how to use them, testified to a person's unceasing efforts to realize inner potentials. The author also traces shifts in the meaning of 'tradition', suggesting that although 'modern' people cannot 'be' traditional, they must have traditions in order to produce themselves.

Economists and Societies
Marion Fourcade Princeton University Press 2009 - 3
"Economists and Societies" is the first book to systematically compare the profession of economics in the United States, Britain, and France, and to explain why economics, far from being a uniform science, differs in important ways among these three countries. Drawing on in-depth interviews with economists, institutional analysis, and a wealth of scholarly evidence, Marion Fourcade traces the history of economics in each country from the late nineteenth century to the present, demonstrating how each political, cultural, and institutional context gave rise to a distinct professional and disciplinary configuration. She argues that because the substance of political life varied from country to country, people's experience and understanding of the economy, and their political and intellectual battles over it, crystallized in different ways - through scientific and mercantile professionalism in the United States, public-minded elitism in Britain, and statist divisions in France. Fourcade moves past old debates about the relationship between culture and institutions in the production of expert knowledge to show that scientific and practical claims over the economy in these three societies arose from different elites with different intellectual orientations, institutional entanglements, and social purposes. Much more than a history of the economics profession, "Economists and Societies" is a revealing exploration of American, French, and British society and culture as seen through the lens of their respective economic institutions and the distinctive character of their economic experts.

James Mark / Bogdan C. Iacob Cambridge University Press 2019
The collapse of the Berlin Wall has come to represent the entry of an
isolated region onto the global stage. On the contrary, this study argues
that Communist states had in fact long been shapers of an interconnecting
world, with 1989 instead marking a choice by local elites about the form
that globalisation should take. Published to coincide with the thirtieth
anniversary of the 1989 revolutions, this work draws on material from local
archives to international institutions to explore the place of Eastern Europe
in the emergence, since the 1970s, of a new world order that combined
neoliberal economics and liberal democracy with increasingly bordered
civilizational, racial, and religious identities. An original and wide-ranging
history, it explores the importance of the region’s links to the West, East
Asia, Africa, and Latin America in this global transformation, reclaiming
the era’s other visions such as socialist democracy and authoritarian modernization
that had been lost in triumphalist histories of market liberalism.
The Modern Girl Around the World 豆瓣 Goodreads
作者: Alys Eve Weinbaum / Lynn M. Thomas Duke University Press Books 2008 - 12 其它标题: The Modern Girl Around the World: Consumption, Modernity, and Globalization
During the 1920s and 1930s, in cities from Beijing to Bombay, Tokyo to Berlin, Johannesburg to New York, the Modern Girl made her sometimes flashy, always fashionable appearance in city streets and cafes, in films, advertisements, and illustrated magazines. Modern Girls smoked cigarettes; they wore high heels and sexy clothes. They applied lipstick and face creams and other cosmetics. Adorned in provocative attire, in hot pursuit of romantic love, Modern Girls appeared on the surface to disregard prescribed roles of dutiful daughter, wife, and mother. Contemporaries debated whether the Modern Girl was looking for sexual, economic, or political emancipation, or whether she was little more than an image, a hollow product of the emerging global commodity culture. The contributors to this collection track the Modern Girl as she emerged as a global phenomenon during the 1920s and 1930s.Scholars of history, women's studies, English, cultural studies, and area studies follow the Modern Girl around the world, analyzing her manifestations in Germany, Australia, China, Japan, France, India, the United States, Russia, and South Africa. Along the way, they demonstrate how the economic structures and cultural flows that shaped a particular form of modern femininity crossed national and imperial boundaries. At the same time, they highlight the gendered dynamics of interwar processes of racial formation, showing how images of the Modern Girl were used to shore up or critique racial formations. This volume concludes with commentaries by Kathy Peiss, Miriam Silverberg, and Timothy Burke. It's contributors include: Davarian L. Baldwin; Tani E. Barlow; Timothy Burke; Liz Conor; Madeleine Y. Dong; Anne E. Gorsuch; Ruri Ito; Kathy Peiss; Uta G. Poiger; Priti Ramamurthy; Mary Louise Roberts; Barbara Sato; Miriam Silverberg; Lynn M. Thomas; and, Alys Eve Weinbaum.

Sociologists in Action
White, Shelley K.; White, Jonathan M.; Korgen, Kathleen O. Sage Publications (CA) 2013 - 3
Sociologists in Action will provide vivid examples of how sociologists are using sociological tools to make a positive impact on our society. In each chapter, four or five public sociologists will describe, in vivid detail, how they have used sociology to understand and influence the world around them. The chapters will cover the key topics in sociology courses and the pieces will bring the subject matter of sociology to life for students, giving them clear examples of the power and usefulness of sociology as they learn the course content. The discussion questions and suggested additional readings and resources at the end of every chapter will provide students the opportunity to delve further into the topics covered and help create full and nuanced discussions, grounded in the oreal worldo work of public sociologists.Sociologists in Action, will include original, brief, highly readable articles from a wide array of Public Sociologists in Action, describing some of their work that has impacted society. The authors carefully choose sociologists who are using their skills and research on a wide range of issues, and through a wide variety of sociological methods and venues. Each chapter will contain four or five, 3-5 page PSIA pieces that will correspond closely to each of the first 11 chapters in The Engaged Sociologist, discluding the chapters on theory and methods. The majority of the PSIA sections will be written by the PSIAs themselves and carefully edited by Korgen and White. The SIA pieces in The Engaged Sociologist: Public Sociologists in Action will be significantly longer than the one-page SIA boxes in The Engaged Sociologist. This will allow for a deeper exploration of the specific sociological tools being applied as well as the methods and processes leading to critical social change. At the end of each chapter, the authors will include discussion questions that relate the SIA pieces to the topics in the corresponding chapters in The Engaged Sociologist, and provide additional readings and resources on the various topics. The result will be a public sociology reader that can be used in any course, but that will have a particularly strong synergy as a supplement to The Engaged Sociologist. 10% of the proceeds from this book will be donated to Free the Children.

Civic Gifts
Elisabeth S. Clemens University of Chicago Press 2019
In Civic Gifts, Elisabeth S. Clemens takes a singular approach to probing the puzzle that is the United States. How, she asks, did a powerful state develop within an anti-statist political culture? How did a sense of shared nationhood develop despite the linguistic, religious, and ethnic differences among settlers and, eventually, citizens? Clemens reveals that an important piece of the answer to these questions can be found in the unexpected political uses of benevolence and philanthropy, practices of gift-giving and reciprocity that co-existed uneasily with the self-sufficient independence expected of liberal citizens Civic Gifts focuses on the power of gifts not only to mobilize communities throughout US history, but also to create new forms of solidarity among strangers. Clemens makes clear how, from the early Republic through the Second World War, reciprocity was an important tool for eliciting both the commitments and the capacities needed to face natural disasters, economic crises, and unprecedented national challenges. Encompassing a range of endeavors from the mobilized voluntarism of the Civil War, through Community Chests and the Red Cross to the FDR-driven rise of the March of Dimes, Clemens shows how voluntary efforts were repeatedly articulated with government projects. The legacy of these efforts is a state co-constituted with, as much as constrained by, civil society.
