袭人回家探亲。宝玉赴宁府看戏，茗烟陪宝玉偷偷去袭人家探望。李嬷嬷大闹宝玉房。袭人哄骗宝玉，称其母兄定欲将其赎身，宝玉信以为真。袭人趁机提出“留府条件”，劝诫宝玉不可再任性恣情，不喜务正。
袭人觉出宝玉与黛玉湘云太过亲密，不合规矩，便冷落他，来劝宝玉。
元妃省亲后，欲不辜负姐妹们大好青春，着她们入大观园居住，宝玉一同入园读书。宝玉与众姐妹入住大观园，恣意玩乐，快乐非常。茗烟搜来禁书给宝玉解闷，宝玉、黛玉共读西厢、黛玉听《会真记》（即《牡丹亭》），得到爱情启蒙。贾芸到荣府谋事，贿赂凤姐。小红见到贾芸，春心微动。
贾芸探宝玉，与小红换帕传情；黛玉发幽情，被宝玉窥破，二人口角；薛蟠假传贾政之命，骗宝玉吃酒；黛玉担忧宝玉，深夜探望，被拒门外，感时伤情。
芒种节，众姐妹在园中送花神，独缺黛玉。宝钗在滴翠亭听到小红私情，使计脱身，小红疑到黛玉身上。宝玉听到葬花吟，感时伤怀，哭倒在地。小红为凤姐取荷包，得到凤姐赏识。宝玉道冯紫英家喝酒，结识琪官（即蒋玉函）。娘娘颁布赏赐，独宝钗、宝玉相同，黛玉不快，更看见宝玉望着宝钗发呆，黛玉心酸。
贾府全部出动前往清虚观打醮，张道士给宝玉提亲，宝玉不快，回家和黛玉吵架，惊动了老太太。宝玉去找黛玉和好，在贾母处，宝黛钗三人暗语相加，气氛紧张，宝玉到王夫人处，因为他的事，金钏被王夫人赶出去。
宝玉借晴雯跌扇子与之口角，后为讨晴雯欢心，宝玉故意让她撕扇。湘云偶然拾到宝玉丢失的麒麟，二人讨论仕途经济时，黛玉在窗外意外偷听到宝玉对自己的赞扬，感慨果然没有认错知己。宝玉误将袭人当作黛玉，错诉肺腑，引发袭人的担心。金钏儿因被撵而羞愤投井。
长史官来找琪官，加之贾环诽谤宝玉，贾政棒打宝玉。惊动了贾府众人。

宝钗去看宝玉，宝玉梦见黛玉来看他，晚上送帕给黛玉试探，黛玉在帕上题诗。袭人道王夫人出诉说对宝玉的担忧，王夫人很赞赏，给了她妾的许诺。薛姨妈，宝钗错怪了薛蟠，薛蟠说出宝钗金玉良缘的打算来气宝钗，宝钗委屈。
螃蟹宴后，刘姥姥再进贾府，受到贾母款待。贾母带着刘姥姥游大观园，并要求惜春给刘姥姥画大观园图。鸳鸯和凤姐撺掇刘姥姥出丑给贾母作乐，众人其乐融融。一行人来到藕香榭喝酒行令，黛玉无意中失口说出《牡丹亭》中的词句。
刘姥姥在藕香榭宴席上暴饮套杯美酒、莫辩茄菜何料，笑得众人前仰后合。妙玉登场，超凡出尘，竟胜宝黛，令宝玉出离神往。刘姥姥吃坏了肚子，醉眠怡红院。当夜，宝钗借黛玉行白天酒令之事，深情劝诫“女子不可看杂书”，黛玉深深感激。
贾母为凤姐大办生日，学小家子凑份子，举府眷仆，纷纷迎合，尤氏总理。凤姐实仍暗中操控。小小“份儿钱”，暗藏大家族各路玄机。庆生当日，亦是金钏儿忌日，宝玉却全身缟素，茗烟快马奔至水仙庵，深情泪祭，唯黛玉心知肚明。
贾琏与鲍二家的在房内白日偷欢，凤姐闻之撒泼大闹，更加罪于平儿。平儿委屈不尽，以死相向。贾琏恼羞成怒，拔剑威胁。凤姐向贾母求救。宝玉深情无限，抚慰平儿，平儿受宠若惊。在贾母微笑监督之下，贾琏、凤姐、平儿重修旧好。三人回房，惊闻鲍二家的上吊自尽。
新年将至，庄头乌进孝来宁府交租，因旱涝之故，上缴的租子银两并未达到贾珍预算。租子的一年不如一年引发贾珍不满。管理家庙的贾芹去贾珍处领年货，反遭贾珍一顿数落。除夕夜，贾母带领众多儿孙去宁国府宗祠祭祖，履行两府每年的传统。元宵晚宴上，黛玉不顾体统，众目睽睽之下让宝玉代其喝酒。因女先儿的一出《凤求凰》，贾母掰谎，批才子佳人。凤姐连说两个“散了”的笑话，预示着盛宴必散的结局。

为了试探宝玉的心意，紫鹃撒谎说黛玉要回苏州，宝玉大哭大闹，紫鹃虽探得宝玉心意，又悲不知谁来为宝玉做主。宝玉发下毒誓。
老太妃死了，主子们走后，李纨、探春，宝钗共同料理家事。赵姨娘的兄弟赵国基死，探春因按例驳了赵姨娘的面子，惹起赵姨娘一场大闹。探春不但弹压了赵姨娘，更震吓了府里上下的管家媳妇婆子们。探春管事后，打破陈规，对大观园里的私弊进行了整顿。其间平儿始终扶侍着探春，令宝钗也不得不叹服。
宁府老爷贾敬服丹药升天，尤氏在男主子不在家的情况下，独自一人料理丧事。在守灵过程中，贾琏看上美貌的尤二姐，在贾蓉的设计和撺掇下，贾琏于国孝家孝中作着偷娶二房的准备。
贾琏偷娶了尤二姐，将二尤安置在外宅中。尤三姐与贾珍有旧，却不愿给贾珍做小，自言有心上人，是柳湘莲。贾琏巧遇柳湘莲，说成了婚事，柳湘莲送给尤三姐鸳鸯剑作为证物。柳湘莲误说尤三姐与贾府有染，上门要悔婚，尤三姐还剑自刎。柳湘莲后悔不及，断发出家。
凤姐听说了尤二姐之事，在家审问兴儿来旺。贾琏走后，凤姐亲自把尤二姐带回大观园来，一面做尽好人，一面暗中唆使张华告官。得了这个由头，凤姐大闹宁国府，狠狠羞辱了尤氏和贾蓉。
凤姐带尤二姐去见贾母，买好人。一面唆使张华来领尤二姐，失败之后，要来旺斩草除根。利用秋桐暗害尤二姐。尤二姐怀胎之后，被庸医所误，堕下一胎，心灰意冷，吞金自杀。尤二姐死后，凤姐又借贾母的嘴，草葬了尤二姐。

晴雯病重，身体非常的孱弱。一天，贾宝玉不小心将贾母送给他的一件非常珍贵的孔雀裘斗篷给少了个洞，不顾病痛的身体，晴雯在深夜里就这微弱的烛火帮贾宝玉缝补斗篷，导致身体更加的虚弱。一天，邢夫人捡到了一个非常低级的香囊，她将香囊交给了王夫人，看到这淫秽不堪的东西，王夫人勃然大怒，她下令家丁们将园子翻了个底朝天，每一个丫鬟的住所都遭到了粗暴的彻查，晴雯的自然也不例外，晴雯受惊又受辱。
王家人早就看晴雯不顺眼了，趁着这件事情，他们怂恿王夫人将晴雯从大观园里赶了出去，毫无还手之力的晴雯，等待着她的只有死亡这一悲惨的命运。

Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland is a masterpiece.
There have been several films that attempted to bring the viewer into the dream of Lewis Carroll's Alice.. but none have succeeded like Jonathan Miller's 1966 BBC Alice in Wonderland. A legendary cast.. without costumes.. improvises Lewis Carroll's work with an unsettling brilliance. The result is a film that casts a new light.. or shadow.. on a story beloved by millions. A dark environment both in aesthetics and passion.. Jonathan Miller recreates Alice's dream into a nightmare. One that doesn't allow the viewer to get comfortable unless they can accept the evil undercurrent that moves the story forward.. or backwards. The film is cast with many legends of the screen and stage.. all of whom provide performances worthy of the legend accolade. The character of Alice is represented differently than in traditional adaptations. She seems almost removed from the "reality" taking place before her.. even at times when she is involved in the "reality" as much as the characters of her dream-world. Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland for BBC television is a must-see for anyone who enjoyed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass or anyone who enjoys low budget films that are improvised into timeless masterpieces.
