How to Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration of the Mathematics of Mathematics

The Innovation Delusion
Lee Vinsel / Andrew L. Russell Crown Publishing Group 2020 - 9
“Innovation” is the hottest buzzword in business. But what if our obsession with finding the next big thing has distracted us from the work that matters most?
It’s hard to avoid innovation these days. Nearly every product gets marketed as being disruptive, whether it’s genuinely a new invention or just a new toothbrush. But in this manifesto on thestate of American work, historians of technology Lee Vinsel and Andrew L. Russell argue that our way of thinking about and pursuing innovation has made us poorer, less safe, and—ironically—less innovative.
Drawing on years of original research and reporting, The Innovation Delusion shows how the ideology of change for its own sake has proved a disaster. Corporations have spent millions hiring chief innovation officers while their core businesses tank. Computer science programs have drilled their students on programming and design, even though theoverwhelming majority of jobs are in IT and maintenance. In countless cities, suburban sprawl has left local governments with loads of deferred repairs that they can’t afford to fix. And sometimes innovation even kills—like in 2018 when a Miami bridge hailed for its innovative design collapsed onto a highway and killed six people.
In this provocative, deeply researched book, Vinsel and Russell tell the story of how we devalued the work that underpins modern life—and, in doing so, wrecked our economy and public infrastructure while lining the pockets of consultants who combine the ego of Silicon Valley with the worst of Wall Street’s greed. The authors offer a compelling plan for how we can shift our focus away from the pursuit of growth at all costs, and back toward neglected activities like maintenance, care, and upkeep.
For anyone concerned by the crumbling state of our roads and bridges or the direction our economy is headed, The Innovation Delusion is a deeply necessary reevaluation of a trend we can still disrupt.

The Art of Logic: How to Make Sense in a World that Doesn’t

Ancient Philosophy
Julia Annas Oxford Paperbacks 2000 - 10
The tradition of ancient philosophy is a long, rich and varied one, in which a constant note is that of discussion and argument. This book introduces readers to some ancient debates to engage with the ancient developments of some themes. Getting away from the presentation of ancient philosophy as a succession of Great Thinkers, the book gives readers a sense of the freshness and liveliness of ancient philosophy, and of its wide variety of themes and styles.
The Obstacle Is the Way 豆瓣
Ryan Holiday Portfolio Hardcover 2014 - 5
We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn’t be this way. There is a formula for success that’s been followed by the icons of hist ory—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.
These men and women were not exceptionally brilliant, lucky, or gifted. Their success came from timeless philosophical principles laid down by a Roman emperor who struggled to articulate a method for excellence in any and all situations.
This book reveals that formula for the first time—and shows us how we can turn our own adversity into advantage.
Goodreads
The Second Mountain:The Quest for a Moral Life
CITIC Press Corporation 2020 - 10

A series of spiritual exercises filled with wisdom, practical guidance, and profound understanding of human behavior, Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical reflection ever written. In Gregory Hays’s new translation—the first in a generation—Marcus’s thoughts speak with a new immediacy: never before have they been so directly and powerfully presented.
How To Raise A Boy
Michael C. Reichert Penguin Publishing Group 2019 - 4
At a time when many boys are in crisis, a much-needed roadmap for helping boys grow into strong and compassionate menIn this groundbreaking book, a leading psychologist and researcher of the journey from boyhood to manhood reveals how narrow conceptions of what it means to be a "real boy" or "real man" are hurting boys and the vital role parents and educators can play in creating safety nets for boys. Over the past two decades there has been an explosion of new studies that have expanded our knowledge of how boys think and feel. Recently, the #MeToo movement has cast a spotlight on the question of how we can best raise boys to be respectful of women. In this book, Michael Reichert draws on his decades of research to challenge age-old conventions about how boys become men. Parents are increasingly anxious that their boys -- in an effort to be stoic and "man like" -- are shutting down. In this book Reichert explains how old paradigms about manhood may be impacting our boys and how parents, educators, and mentors can help boys develop socially and emotionally. How to Raise a Boy provides those who care for young boys and teenagers the latest insights from psychology and neuroscience to give us the tools we need to help build more self-aware, caring and compassionate men.

Game Changers
Dave Asprey Harper Wave 2018
The bestselling author of Head Strong and The Bulletproof Diet answers the question "How do I kick more ass?"—providing proven techniques for becoming happier, healthier, and smarter, culled from the wisdom and insight of world-class thought leaders and mavericks of science and business.
When Dave Asprey started his Bulletproof Radio podcast more than five years ago, he sought out thought leaders and influencers in an array of disciplines, from biochemists to business titans to mediation masters. These folks were some of the top performing humans in the world, people who had changed their areas of study or even pioneered entirely new fields. Dave wanted to know: What did they have in common? What mattered most to them? What makes them so successful at what they do—and what makes them happiest? And so, at the end of each interview, Dave began asking the same question: "What are your top three recommendations for people who want to kick more ass?"
Combing through the recordings, looking for patterns and common threads, he found that the wisdom gleaned from these highly successful people can be distilled into three main categories: body, mind, and spirit. Game Changers is the culmination of Dave’s years-long statistical analysis of these conversations, offering thirty-six science-backed, high performance "laws" that are a virtual playbook for how to become not only more successful, but also happier and healthier.
Each chapter of Game Changers is structured around one of these laws. Dave combines anecdotes from game changers like Daniel Amen, David Perlmutter, Arianna Huffington, Dan Harris, and Tim Ferris with his own research and practical advice that readers can put into action immediately. From practicing gratitude and mindfulness to prioritizing social connections and sex, taming fear and anxiety to optimizing nutrition and movement, Dave brings together the wisdom of today’s game-changers to help everyone optimize their lives.
The Pocket Stoic
University of Chicago Press 2020 - 9
To counter the daily anxieties, stress, and emotional swings caused by the barrage of stimuli that plagues modern life, many people have been finding unexpected solace in a philosophy from a very different and distant time: Stoicism. Today, more than 100,000 people are members of online communities for modern Stoics, and there are annual conferences, meet-ups, and workshops for those aspiring to walk the Stoic path. But what is Stoicism, and what makes it resonate so powerfully today?
As John Sellars shows in The Pocket Stoic, the popular image of the isolated and unfeeling Stoic hardly does justice to the rich vein of thought that we find in the work of Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, the three great Roman Stoics. Their works are recognized classics, and for good reason—they speak to some of the perennial issues that face anyone trying to navigate their way through life. These writings, fundamentally, are about how to live—how to understand your place in the world, how to cope when things don’t go well, how to manage your emotions, how to behave toward others, and finally, how to live a good life. To be a Stoic is to recognize that much of the suffering in your life is due to the way you think about things, and that you have the ability to train your mind to look at the world in a new way—to recognize what you can and cannot control and to turn adversity into opportunity.
Concise and accessible, The Pocket Stoic provides a welcome introduction to the lives and thought of the key Stoics. It is also a perfect guide to help you start incorporating the practice of Stoicism into your everyday approach to life.

How to Grow Old 豆瓣 Goodreads
作者: Marcus Tullius Cicero / Philip Freeman 译者: Philip Freeman Princeton University Press 2016 - 3 其它标题: How to Grow Old: Ancient Wisdom for the Second Half of Life
Worried that old age will inevitably mean losing your libido, your health, and possibly your marbles too? Well, Cicero has some good news for you. In How to Grow Old , the great Roman orator and statesman eloquently describes how you can make the second half of life the best part of all--and why you might discover that reading and gardening are actually far more pleasurable than sex ever was.

Filled with timeless wisdom and practical guidance, Cicero's brief, charming classic—written in 44 BC and originally titled On Old Age —has delighted and inspired readers, from Saint Augustine to Thomas Jefferson, for more than two thousand years. Presented here in a lively new translation with an informative new introduction and the original Latin on facing pages, the book directly addresses the greatest fears of growing older and persuasively argues why these worries are greatly exaggerated--or altogether mistaken.

Montaigne said Cicero's book "gives one an appetite for growing old." The American founding father John Adams read it repeatedly in his later years. And today its lessons are more relevant than ever in a world obsessed with the futile pursuit of youth.
