The Devil in the White City
Erik Larson Vintage 2004 - 2
Erik Larson's gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America's rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his "World's Fair Hotel" just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium. Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake.
The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. In this book the smoke, romance, and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive as never before.
The Alienist 豆瓣 Goodreads
Caleb Carr Random House Trade Paperbacks 2006 - 10
The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

The newly appointed police commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, in a highly unorthodox move, enlists the two men in the murder investigation, counting on the reserved Kreizler's intellect and Moore's knowledge of New York's vast criminal underworld. They are joined by Sara Howard, a brave and determined woman who works as a secretary in the police department. Laboring in secret (for alienists, and the emerging discipline of psychology, are viewed by the public with skepticism at best), the unlikely team embarks on what is a revolutionary effort in criminology-- amassing a psychological profile of the man they're looking for based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who has killed before--and will kill again before the hunt is over.

Fast-paced and gripping, infused with a historian's exactitude, The Alienist conjures up the Gilded Age and its untarnished underside: verminous tenements and opulent mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. Here is a New York during an age when questioning society's belief that all killers are born, not made, could have unexpected and mortal consequences.

Luanne Rice Bantam 2001 - 1
SOMETIMES WE FIND THE FAMILY WE WERE ALWAYS MEANT TO HAVEAcclaimed novelist Luanne Rice "touches the deepest, most tender corners of the heart". Her stories remind us how precious and fragile life can be -- and that we must risk our hearts every day to know happiness.Abandoned by her husband, Tim McIntosh, before their daughter was born, Dianne Robbins has spent eleven years caring for her exceptional child's every need -- almost alone. It was Tim's brother, Alan, the town pediatrician, who stood by Dianne and her daughter, Julia. Throughout years of waiting, watching, and caring, Alan hid his love for his brother's wife. But Dianne has closed her heart toward men -- especially men named McIntosh. It will take a very special twelve-year-old to remind them that love comes in many forms, and can be received with as much grace as it is given. As lyrical and moving as the poetry of nature, Follow the Stars Home is a miracle of storytelling that will take your breath away.
The Moth
Catherine Cookson
When Robert Bradley gave up his job in the Jarrow shipyards to work at his uncle's old-established carpenter's shop in a small village, he found that life with domineering Uncle John did not always prove easy. As a diversion, he began exploring the Durham countryside and it was there that he had his first strange encounter with Millie, the ethereal girl-child whose odd ways and nocturnal wanderings had led to her being known locally as 'Thorman's Moth'.
The time came when a dramatic turn in Robert's affairs brought him into a close involvement with the Thormans of Foreshaw and especially with the eldest daughter, Agnes, who alone of the family loved and protected the frail, unworldy Millie. But this was 1913, and anything beyond the most formal relationship had to face the barriers and injustices of a rigid social hierarchy that was soon to perish in the flames of war.

Me and Kaminski
Daniel Kehlmann Pantheon 2008 - 11
From the internationally best-selling author Daniel Kehlmann, a provocative and wickedly funny novel about two unpredictable men–one an artist and the other a journalist, who together embark on an unexpected adventure with uproarious results.
Sebastian Zollner’s failure as a journalist is matched only by his personal failures: his girlfriend is moving in a new lover before Sebastian even knows he’s been dumped. Searching for the break that will redeem him in the eyes of his peers, he heads off on a wild goose chase into the mountains to interview the eccentric, legendary painter Manuel Kaminski, with the hope of writing his biography.
Kaminski is going blind and is living in seclusion with his daughter. He could be working on his next masterpiece or easing into his final days, and his inconsistent career raises the question of whether he has been a fraud or a genius. His artistic reputation hinges on any number of factors but most prominently on a definitive biography. Enter Zollner–who has no intention of writing a puff piece. He’s out to dig dirt and to force Kaminski to confront the legacy of his work. But the secrets he uncovers will lead Kaminski, and Zollner himself, to places neither of them ever expected to go.
With edgy wit and intelligence, Daniel Kehlmann dives into the problems of what is “truth” in our celebrity-crazed times and embraces the energy and humanity that lie beneath the pretensions of the art and journalistic worlds. A firecracker of a novel.

Every Man Dies Alone
Hofmann, Michael Melville House 2009 - 1
This never-before-translated masterpiece--by a heroic best-selling writer who saw his life crumble when he wouldn't join the Nazi Party--is based on a true story. It presents a richly detailed portrait of life in Berlin under the Nazis and tells the sweeping saga of one working-class couple who decides to take a stand when their only son is killed at the front. With nothing but their grief and each other against the awesome power of the Reich, they launch a simple, clandestine resistance campaign that soon has an enraged Gestapo on their trail, and a world of terrified neighbors and cynical snitches ready to turn them in. In the end, it's more than an edge-of-your-seat thriller, more than a moving romance, even more than literature of the highest order--it's a deeply stirring story of two people standing up for what's right, and for each other.

The Zookeeper's Wife
Diane Ackerman W. W. Norton & Company 2007 - 10
A true storyas powerful as Schindler's List in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from Nazi hands.
When Germany invaded Poland, Stuka bombers devastated Warsawand the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts. Jan, active in the Polish resistance, kept ammunition buried in the elephant enclosure and stashed explosives in the animal hospital. Meanwhile, Antonina kept her unusual household afloat, caring for both its human and its animal inhabitantsotters, a badger, hyena pups, lynxes.
With her exuberant prose and exquisite sensitivity to the natural world, Diane Ackerman engages us viscerally in the lives of the zoo animals, their keepers, and their hidden visitors. She shows us how Antonina refused to give in to the penetrating fear of discovery, keeping alive an atmosphere of play and innocence even as Europe crumbled around her. 8 pages of illustrations.

Dave Eggers McSweeney's 2012 - 6
In a rising Saudi Arabian city, far from weary, recession-scarred America, a struggling businessman pursues a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter's college tuition, and finally do something great. In "A Hologram for the King," Dave Eggers takes us around the world to show how one man fights to hold himself and his splintering family together in the face of the global economy's gale-force winds. This taut, richly layered, and elegiac novel is a powerful evocation of our contemporary moment -- and a moving story of how we got here.

Krabat
Preussler, Otfried 2010 - 9
An eagerly awaited reissue of a classic children's book. Otfried Preussler is a giant of German children's literature. Imagine Roald Dahl, JK Rowling and xxx rolled in to one. His books have been translated into 26 languages, sold millions of copies worldwide and been turned into movies but they have been sadly unavailable in English for many years. Krabat was originally published in the early 70s under the misleading title The Satanic Mill. It is Preussler's most successful book and was showered with awards at the time. It was also featured in Cornelia Funke's bestselling novel Inkheart. It tells the story of a 14-year-old beggar boy called Krabat. He becomes an apprentice to the master of a watermill where he joins the eleven other journeymen who work there. Much to his surprise he soon discovers that the mill is actually a school of black magic and he is expected to rather more than a normal miller's trade. Krabat studies hard and becomes the master's star pupil, but when he falls for a local village girl the depth of the master's evil and the darker secrets of the mill begin to reveal themselves. Can Krabat use all the of the magic skills he has learned to secure his escape? Published for the first time in the UK under its original title, Krabat is a wonderfully dark adventure that has thrilled and scared generations of children worldwide and looks set to weave its spell over a whole new audience of young readers.
