Masaya Kato & Valotihkuu 类型: 电子
发布日期 2021年2月5日 出版发行: Shimmering Moods Records
This is the first collaborative album by Japanese composer Masaya Kato and Russian composer Denis Davydov (Valotihkuu). Denis made soundscapes with nature sounds and a variety of acoustic and electroacoustic instruments, tape loops. After that Masaya composed and played Fender Rhodes and added little bits of vinyl and tape noises.
The track titles are named after ingredients of dyestuffs, pigments for blue colors.
We hope you enjoy this magical collaboration!

It’s called Home, and for a myriad of reasons… from my attempts to examine and re-examine what ‘home’ means, living 7,000 miles from my own, in a place that goes out of its way to remind you every time you leave the house that where you are is not your home… to really what ‘home’ means philosophically I guess, how much of it derives its meaning intrinsically, how much of it is manufactured, and really what it means to ‘be home’… to the fact that my return to Echospace is really a return home for so many reasons I could never even attempt to outline here.
This issue of what home means, and what it means to be home, is one I’ve grappled with for years upon years of self-imposed exile in China, isolated from everyone and everything that I would associate with what at least would best encroach on a standard definition of ‘home’… it’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself, like most things, I guess.
The album is a bit hard to describe… while it obviously has many qualities that my work always contains, there’s just something about it that is nothing like anything else I’ve made… I really don’t know how to describe it… from the way it sounds, to the way it feels, there is just something about it that’s unlike anything else I’ve made. It’s by far my most hypnotic work, and really possibly my most powerful, but in a quieter way than I think most would expect when I use a word like that, as I’m generally known for being pretty overboard.
It’s pretty massive… a double CD, all of my own work, with one CD containing (some) beats, and one beatless, but it’s dramatically different from White Clouds Drift On and On, much darker, much more hypnotic, and more somber in some ways, while in some ways going to new heights of emotion that even White Clouds couldn’t reach, or really anything I’ve made before.
I really am honestly perplexed with this fascination in recent years with seeing what artists look like. Who cares?
As with anything, I don’t really know how or why it came out the way it did, I just listened to my heart and went with what it said… but (just like White Clouds) it was made from beginning to end completely from scratch purely for Echospace, and more importantly, was the first time I sat down to try to face this issue of ‘home’ head-on… a lot of my music touches on it, as it’s such a massive part of my daily life, but this is the only time I’ve ever really tried to face it head-on, in all its beautiful, horrible, exhilarating, terrifying glory. Though it couldn’t really be much more different from my last Echospace album, it shares a similarity, in that it could have only been made for Echospace. No one else in the world could bring out what it brought out in me. As always, I just hope someone can feel what I feel.

Love In The Void 豆瓣
Hammock 类型: 摇滚
发布日期 2023年1月27日 出版发行: Hammock Music
Breaking from the strange monotony and abnormal norms that took hold during two years of pandemic life, Hammock returns with "Love in the Void", an album that looks to the future, seizes the present, and unabashedly relishes the experiences and bonds that bring meaning to our days. Known for crafting orchestral works of stirring cinematic ambience, on "Love in the Void" the Nashville-based duo of Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson bring guitar-forward, heart-pounding urgency to songs that shout through and shatter the static of complacency.
Since forming as Hammock in 2003, Byrd and Thompson have released 11 critically-acclaimed albums, and are renowned for their unique talent for bringing inexpressible emotion to life. The Covid-19 pandemic followed closely after one of Hammock’s career-defining works, the Mysterium, Universalis, and Silencia trilogy that chronicled the incomprehensible loss of Byrd’s 20-year-old nephew. At their homes and apart, Byrd and Thompson then recorded Elsewhere, an album of shimmering ambience that channeled alienated longing and displacement into avenues that gave way to worlds and possibilities yet realized.
Shaken awake and needing to break free of frustrations and longings, "Love in the Void" pulses with an unbridled spirit for action and experience and a burning desire for connection. Across songs that hammer home the keenly felt emotions of life’s highs and lows, Byrd and Thompson crest soaring crescendos awash in reverb and delve to keenly felt moments of quiet introspection, with unflinching lyrics on tracks like “Undoing” and “Denial of Endings'' that weigh choices made and circumstances that can’t be changed. Lush and dramatic string orchestration from Matt Kidd (Slow Meadow) and emphatic drumming from Jake Finch heighten the stakes in play, and Christine Byrd’s (Lumenette) ethereal vocals leave mysteries lingering in the haze.
"Love in the Void" is Hammock’s loudest album to date, embracing daring and vulnerability with palpable vitality at its core. Wide-eyed and looking forward, "Love in the Void" moves into an unknown future without fear. -Wyatt Marshall

WISEFAKE is the project by Victor Zuo (sound) & Alice He (arts) based in Toronto, running since 2016. Zuo is member of Chinese synthpop duo Wanderlust which is formed in 2009. Compared with Wanderlust, wisefake is more likely an experiment in the mindset of electronic sound producing and equipment exploring.
After released 2 synthpop albums in a row, Zuo started wearying 'Melody'. He reconsidered the relations between 'sound' and 'music', eventually come to the conclusion that 'sound is music', and produced two full-length albums based on it, <strati> is the first one. All of the recording, effects and mixing are done by hardware, only uses DAW for editing, overlaying and exporting, almost abandoning software, aiming to maximize the 'sound' element and blur the boundary between manual performance and generated music.

Recordings from the Åland Islands 豆瓣
Jeremiah Chiu / Marta Sofia Honer 类型: 电子
发布日期 2022年3月11日 出版发行: International Anthem
In 2017 Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer traveled together to the Åland Islands (an archipelago that is host to around 6,500 islands) in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland. They headed to the islands with the intention of helping two friends (mother/daughter duo Jannika/Sage Reed) barn raise a small inn named Hotel Svala in Kumlinge (a municipality consisting of a small group of islands and a population of about 320). The idea was that, once completed, Svala would host artist residencies and workshop programs, creating a direct link between the islands and the USA.
The concept of recording music there came about as Honer & Chiu learned more and more about the islands. They were taken by the serene and strange quality of the place. The sun doesn’t set in the summer (and barely rises in the winter). The network of miniature islands is traversed by ferry which, according to Chiu, “casts a surreal horizontal movement through space and time, with islands shifting into and out of periphery, totally still and calm, yet always in motion.”
In 2019 they were awarded a grant from the Department of Culture to return and perform a concert at the Kumlinge Kyrka, a 14th century medieval church adorned with incredible frescos. The concert was recorded and became source material – along with... improvisations on viola and electronics, pipe organ, pump organ, piano, synthesizers, field recordings and voice memos, all captured across both their trips at various locations on the archipelago – from which they meticulously crafted a post-script in the form of 'Recordings from the Åland Islands'.
Easing listeners into the feeling of the place, the album’s opening track “In Åland Air” is a dream-like haze that slows time, invoking the feeling of descending by plane onto the archipelago, a place Chiu recalls as “lush with a gentle, brackish breeze...” On “Snåcko,” a track named for the island next to Kumlinge, the music becomes a transportive portrait, painting in sound “the romantic and gentle atmosphere of the forests in Åland — a place where your eyes slowly adjust to the rainbow-colored moss covering granite boulders. Walking around, you find the forest floor blossoming with blueberries, currants, and flowers...”
The longest and darkest movement in the collection, “Archipelago,” encapsulates “the experience of being surrounded in the vast network of islands” with a dense cloud of slowly modulating string layers, improvised by Honer in an empty swimming pool at Svala. “The heaviness of the track,” says Honer, “is a reference to the deep darkness experienced during the Nordic winter days.” But the plaintive atmosphere of that penultimate piece is succeeded with the triumphant final movement of the album, “Under the Midnight Sun,” which bellows forth like a vibrant chorus of melodious sighs, echoing classic sounds from Jon Hassell’s 'Vernal Equinox', or Franco Battiato’s 'Clic', or Brian Eno’s 'Another Green World'.
Just as two eyes, two ears, and two halves of a brain work together to create a memory, on their duo debut, Honer and Chiu’s collective pallet produces a vivid three-dimensional hyperreality of painterly tones and textures – bright and kaleidoscopic, but with a deeply warm, earthen resonance. The music evokes a powerful sense of place, transporting and immersing listeners in the other-world of the Åland Islands. And though they achieve this in beautifully natural, organic manner, Chiu & Honer agree this album is quite unlike anything they’ve made before, and likely unlike anything they’ll make in the future.
...about Chiu & Honer...
The combination of modular synthesizer and viola is an uncommon one, but Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer manage to create a distinctive dyad that comes together with grace and truth. They’ve accomplished this by bringing much more than their respective axes to the table. Years of collaboration, cohabitation, shared experience, and separate but equally inspired commitments to utilitarian cultural work bind their disparate timbres together into a singular aesthetic reality.
The two artists met, appropriately, as members of a large ensemble performing Terry Riley’s “In C,” for an annual concert organized by Bitchin Bajas at Chicago modern music hub Constellation. Honer & Chiu had been living and working in Chicago for a long time, both active members of the notoriously interconnected improvisational and experimental music scenes, but they were somehow previously unintroduced. Chiu’s musical CV to that point included work with bands like Icy Demons and Chandeliers, but he was mostly known for his visual and graphic design work as Some All None. Honer had primarily worked as an instructor in Chicago, as well as a member of the ensemble Quartet Datura. In 2014, a year after their first collaboration, together, they decided to migrate to Los Angeles to continue developing their respective careers and crafts in sunnier climes.
Relocation to Los Angeles has proven to be fruitful for both artists. Honer has since become a first-call session player for the likes of Adrian Younge and Beyoncé. She’s also played on recordings by Chloe x Halle, Angel Olsen, Fleet Foxes, and Stanley Clarke, among others, including five recordings with Grammy nominations. Along with her session work, Honer is on the music faculty at California State University. Chiu has expanded his visual work in numerous capacities, in addition to becoming an active intersectional community organizer, and refocusing his musical practice to electronic music composition and sound art. He’s also become an Assistant Professor at Otis College of Art & Design; has exhibited/performed at The Getty Center, LACMA, and other distinguished locales; has become a resident programmer for Dublab; and has generated a strong unit of regular musical collaborators that includes Celia Hollander, Booker Stardrum, Ben Babbitt, Dustin Wong, Takako Minekawa, and Sam Prekop.
