Mitski Miyawaki has always been wary of being turned a symbol, knowing we’re quick to put women on pedestals and even quicker to knock them down. Nonetheless, after the breakout success of 2016’s 'Puberty 2', she was hailed as the new vanguard of indie rock, the one who would save the genre from the white dudes who’ve historically dominated it. Her carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, 'Be The Cowboy', Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased but never so fully present until now—a woman in control. “It’s not like it just pours out,” she says about her songwriting, “it’s not like I’m a vessel. For this new record, I experimented in narrative and fiction.” Though she hesitates to go so far as to say she created full-on characters, she reveals she had in mind “a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel. Because women have so little power and showing emotion is seen as weakness, this ‘character’ clings to any amount of control she can get. Still, there is something very primordial in her that is trying to find a way to get out.”
Since 'Puberty 2' was released to widespread acclaim, ultimately being named one of the best albums of 2016 by Rolling Stone, TIME, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Entertainment Weekly, New York Times, NPR, and SPIN, Mitski has been touring nonstop. She’s circled the globe as the headliner, as well as opening for The Pixies, and most recently, Lorde. The less glamorous, often overlooked aspect of being a rising star is the sheer amount of work that goes into it. “I had been on the road for a long time, which is so isolating, and had to run my own business at the same time,” Mitski explains, “a lot of this record was me not having any feelings, being completely spent but then trying to rally myself and wake up and get back to Mitski. I was feeling really nihilistic and trying to make pop songs.”
We want our artists to be strong but we also expect them to be vulnerable. Rather than avoiding this dilemma, Mitski addresses directly the power that comes from appearing impenetrable and loneliness that follows. In 'Be The Cowboy', Mitski delves into the loneliness of being a symbol and the loneliness of being someone, and how it can feel so much like being no one. The opening song, “Geyser,” introduces us to a woman who can no longer hold it in. She’s about to burst, unleashing a torrent of desire and passion that has been building up inside.
While recording the album with her long-time producer Patrick Hyland - “little by little in multiple studios between tours” - the pair kept returning to “the image of someone alone on a stage, singing solo with a single spotlight trained on them in an otherwise dark room. For most of the tracks, we didn’t layer the vocals with doubles or harmonies, to achieve that campy ‘person singing alone on stage’ atmosphere. We also made the music swell louder than the main vocals and left in vocal errors like when my voice breaks in “Nobody,” right when the band goes quiet, all for a similar effect.” Not a departure so much as an evolution forward from previous albums, Mitski was careful this time to not include much distorted guitar because “that became something people recognized me for, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t repeat myself or unintentionally create a signature sound.”
The title of the album “is a kind of joke,” Mitski says. “There was this artist I really loved who used to have such a cowboy swagger. They were so electric live. With a lot of the romantic infatuations I’ve had, when I look back, I wonder, Did I want them or did I want to be them? Did I love them or did I want to absorb whatever power they had? I decided I could just be my own cowboy.” There is plenty of buoyant swagger to the album, but just as much interrogation into self-mythology. The music swerves from the cheerful to the plaintive. Mournful piano ballads lead into deceptively up-tempo songs like “Nobody” where our cowboy admits, “I know no one will save me/ I just need someone to kiss”.
The self-abasement of desire is strewn across these 14 songs as our heroine seeks out old lovers for secret trysts that end in disappointment, and cannot help but indulge in the masochistic pleasure of blowing up the stability of long-term partnership. In “A Pearl” Mitski sings of how intoxicating it is to hold onto pain. “I wrote so many songs about being in love and being hurt by love. You think your life is horrible when you’re heartbroken, but when you no longer have love or heartbreak in your life, you think, wasn’t it nice when things still hurt? There’s a nostalgia for blind love, a wonderful heady kind of love.”
Infused with a pink glow and mysterious blue light, the performer in Be The Cowboy makes a pact with her audience that the show must go on, but as we draw nearer to the end, a charming ditty recedes into ghostly, faded melancholia, as an angelic voice breaks through to make direct communication. “Two Slow Dancers” closes out the album in a school gymnasium, though we’re no longer in the territory of adolescence. Instead, we’re projected into the future where a pair of old lovers reunite. “They used have something together that is no longer there and they’re trying to relive it in a dance, knowing that they’ll have to go home and go back to their lives.” It’s funny how only the very old and the very young are permitted to indulge openly in dreams, encouraged to reflect and dwell in poetry. In making an record that is about growing old while Mitski herself is still young, a soft truth emerges: sometimes we feel oldest when we are still young and sometimes who we were when we were young never goes away, leaving behind a glowing pearl that we roll around endlessly in the dark.

在《鲸鱼马戏团》于2014年10月推出后,相隔五个月李星宇即带来第二部曲“Whisper”,而从酝酿到完成,这个85后“老男孩”筹备已久。四年前一次欧洲旅行中,他随身带了一个录音机,听到有意思的声音就录下来,在回到工作室反复听那些录音时,脑海里闪过很多画面和片段,开始回想当时的心境并为这些片段创作音乐。后来,去的地方越来越远,甚至深入人烟罕至的丛林,高原,只是想要去听一听“散落在地球各个角落的被人们所忽视的声音”。2015年初,在以“第一个入选柏林电影节天才训练营的中国作曲家”身份结束在德国的学习,转道前往巴黎的途上,李星宇意识到了一种奇妙的重叠。“这张专辑的起点是4年前的巴黎,此时似乎是命运注定,在即将完成唱片的时候,我又再次回到了巴黎。这仿佛是一部声音纪录片,音乐就像手持摄影机的导演,在一个个缓慢而安静长镜头下,将这些年所经历的过往一幕一幕呈现给自己。”

做一个独立音乐人多困难,从来不是我们想要表达的重点,但做一个独立音乐人有多快乐,是我们可以分享的体验。比如,去年第一张专辑《鲸鱼马戏团》首发两周后实体“足足”卖出了200张,最终让李星宇收回印刷成本,就是让他感到无比骄傲与幸福的大事!环境如此恶劣,行业如此混乱,可是好的音乐人还在坚持,也收获到乐迷们身体力行的支持,无论花钱购买唱片,还是透过音乐网站和社交平台评论,对于李星宇来说都是莫大鼓舞。
而“寻光计划”的出现,让李星宇感受到更多暖意。作为虾米音乐人对平台音乐人的全面扶植计划,“寻光计划”用实实在在资金投入为音乐人提供帮助,从企划制作宣传发行各个渠道为唱片进行投入,李星宇凭借第一张专辑《鲸鱼马戏团》取得的热烈反响入选其中,以宽松的条件和虾米合作推出了第二张专辑《鲸鱼马戏团Vol.2 Whisper》,并在内地和台湾同步发片,让自己的作品传播到了更广领域。“国内确实没有第二家这样支持音乐人的公司,至少拿到这些钱,我可以安心创作这张专辑而不是要随时跑去挣钱维持生计了。”
是的,一路走来,这个为梁晓雪、张萱、范世琪、周子琰许多个性歌手担任过制作人,曾加入“嘿乐队”发行两张唱片,获得过诸多奖项的85后生人,而立之年还是无法依靠纯粹热爱的东西养活自己,还是要为广告、动画、游戏、影视剧做各种配乐来维持生计,虽然两条路线并没有高低之分,但第一张专辑通过坚持取得的小小成绩,终于因为用心与才华,得到寻梦之途上更多的帮助。

已经很久没有见过雪了,在这个逐渐令人陌生的城市。记忆里,冬日清晨拉开窗帘的那一刻,时间仿佛静止,定格在可以称为美好回忆的相册里。小时候楼下的院子里有一个废弃的钢架,我一直当它是一艘飞船,想象着有一天它会带我去到那个世界上最远的角落。

在万隆的时候,我住在当地人的家里。那个建筑很特别,每一个房间和客厅都可以通向一个露天的庭院。有一个雨天的夜晚,我坐在客厅的屋檐下看着雨落在庭院的石板地上,忽然觉得清净自在。我关掉原本在播放的音乐,只是安安静静听着落雨的声音。

Set in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, the story centers on one man's love of music and his pursuit of unattainable women as a country comes unglued. In 2006, after eight years of fronting the critically acclaimed Colorado-based band, Newcomers Home, and releasing her first solo record, Watch Them Fall, as a side project—singer/songwriter Katie Herzig retreated to the solitude of her bedroom studio. There, she single-handedly recorded and produced Weightless, a tour-de-force of innovative sonics and songwriting whose tracks have been prominently featured on NPR, KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, E.R., Smallville, and, most recently, on two episodes of television’s highest-rated drama, Grey’s Anatomy.
Following the release of Weightless, Herzig left Colorado for Nashville and immediately started to catch the attention of other artists. Her song “Heaven’s My Home” received a 2007 Grammy nomination for best country performance by The Duhks. She was also invited to open shows for The Fray and join PASTE Magazine and American Songwriter Magazine sponsored tours.
Performing Songwriter Magazine wrote, “Katie Herzig possesses gravity-defying powers on her latest release, balancing heavy and mournful lyrics with light pop melodies that bounce and float into the stratosphere.” PASTE Magazine’s Jason Killingsworth said, “Katie Herzig has a whimsical side that I love. Her music doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the lyrics always [have] a sharp emotional edge to them. I’m a huge fan.”
And now, on May 13, 2008, Katie Herzig’s fans can expect her most adventurous and satisfying album yet: Apple Tree.
While Apple Tree is every bit as melodic and emotionally incisive as Herzig’s previous records, it is nonetheless a bold and assertive step forward. According to Herzig, “Weightless was very much a do-it-yourself, homemade project, but the recording of Apple Tree became very collaborative and pushed me to places, performance and production- wise, that I might not have gone on my own.”
Working as her own producer, Herzig teamed up with Nashville multi-instrumentalist and producer Cason Cooley (The Normals, Derek Webb) for five tracks—as well as with two members of The Fray team, producer Aaron Johnson and guitarist David Welsh on the track ‘Hologram.’ Herzig: “The song ‘Hologram’ was actually written partly in response to a conversation I’d had with Aaron, who said he missed how I used to belt when I sang with the band. So it felt appropriate to record that song with him.”
Though Herzig is the sole author of most of Apple Tree, two of the songs (‘I Will Follow’ and ‘I Want To Belong To You’) were co-written with well-known songwriter Kim Richey. “I’ve learned so much writing with Kim,” Herzig says. “Especially about patience. Allowing the songs to take the time they need to develop, rather than rushing to finish them and ultimately settling.”
Patience is also a trademark of producer Cason Cooley’s contribution to Apple Tree. “I’m always in such a hurry to get my ideas recorded,” Herzig admits, “but Cason helped slow me down. He is an explorer with an incredible ear for melodies. He also helped hand-pick many of the musicians we asked to play on the record.” Nashville recording artists Sandra McCracken and Ruby Amanfu also lent their voices to a few songs on the project.
As on Weightless, Herzig again worked side-by-side with Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, John Prine), who mixed the album, helping to massage two years’ worth of songs and the work of three producers into a cohesive artistic statement.
The result is Apple Tree: a spellbinding, uniquely immersive listening experience that deftly manages to be at once playful and impassioned—challenging and comfortable—intimate and epic.
Which is exactly what listeners have come to expect from Katie Herzig.

Honeymoon is the upcoming fourth studio album by American singer Lana Del Rey. It is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2015, by UMG Recordings. The album was announced during a Billboard magazine interview that was published on January 6, 2015. Del Rey began planning the album just two months after releasing her third studio album Ultraviolence (2014). Del Rey produced the album herself with assistance from Rick Nowels and Kieron Menzies. "High by the Beach" was released as the lead single from Honeymoon on August 10, 2015; while "Terrence Loves You" became available for purchase as the first promotional single on August 21, 2015. "Honeymoon" and "Music to Watch Boys To" later followed on September 7 and September 11 as the second and third promotional singles, respectively.
