The story of Lebanon is one of ongoing tragedy. A march of follies orchestrated by heads of state, sects, and militias. Caught up in the chaos were the Lebanese themselves - made up of different sects, religions, and ethnicities - writing their own history in a string of political assassinations, massacres, and betrayals.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Jerusalem was rich with urban texts inscribed in marble, gold, and cloth, investing holy sites with divine meaning. Ottoman modernization and British colonial rule transformed the city; new texts became a key means to organize society and subjectivity. Stone inscriptions, pilgrims' graffiti, and sacred banners gave way to street markers, shop signs, identity papers, and visiting cards that each sought to define and categorize urban space and people.
A City in Fragments tells the modern history of a city overwhelmed by its religious and symbolic significance. Yair Wallach walked the streets of Jerusalem to consider the graffiti, logos, inscriptions, official signs, and ephemera that transformed the city over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As these urban texts became a tool in the service of capitalism, nationalism, and colonialism, the affinities of Arabic and Hebrew were forgotten and these sister-languages found themselves locked in a bitter war. Looking at the writing of—and literally on—Jerusalem, Wallach offers a creative and expansive history of the city, a fresh take on modern urban texts, and a new reading of the Israel/Palestine conflict through its material culture.

Kibbutz volunteering began in an eclipse. The idealistic and rebellious 1960s generation was charmed by the old communist ideology as it came to life in the Israeli Kibbutz. The 1967 Six-Day War attracted a wave of support for Israel that the Kibbutz Movement saw as a miracle. This documentary examines the 1948 episode of the Altalena, a ship whose fate nearly incited civil war in the newly-established State of Israel. Immediately after Israel attained statehood, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion established a national army into which several independent Jewish defense forces, small armies with their own political philosophies, were supposed to unite. However, on June 20, 1948, the Altalena arrived off Israel carrying 930 World War II refugees and a stockpile of ammunition amassed by the Irgun (one of the independent defense forces) in direct violation of Ben Gurion's new military chain-of-command. In the midst of the ship's landing and a cease-fire in the War of Independence, Ben Gurion gave the order to shell the ship, forcing Jews to fire on Jews and almost sparking a civil war. The late Yitzhak Rabin was one of the participants in this event and is interviewed here along with many other eye witnesses. The controversy surrounding the Altalena affair continues to reverberate in current Israeli politics.

In November ’77, after years of war, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat landed in Israel with a message of peace and a promise to take back the occupied Sinai soil. Nelson, who feared losing his holiday village on the Sinai border, went to war to preserve his bohemian holiday village. He harnessed his comrades at the top of the government to protect the small country he had built. The affair, which lasted nearly a decade, is a web of political intrigue that forced Israel into an entanglement that endangered peace with Egypt. Nelson’s Last Battle is an absurd look at the conflict in the Middle East through a square kilometer of passion.

A true story about the only ever execution of an Israeli officer by the Israeli military.
In 1948, six weeks after the state of Israel was established and in the midst of the War of Independence, Captain Meyer Tuvianski was accused of treason. He was brought to a court martial, tried, sentenced, and executed within 4 hours. One year later he was exonerated by Ben Gurion and received a full military burial.

In 1975 a demolition crew was at work in central Israel, clearing away the remains of an old kibbutz at the top of Kibbutz Hill. When several members of the demo team wrestled aside a large rusted clothes washer, they revealed a small entryway that seemed to lead below ground. Bulldozers shut down their engines, cranes froze in place as members of the team looked down into the hole. What they saw, what they discovered had been kept secret, hidden for three decades.

A proud yet scarred leader, haunted by the Holocaust and decades of war, former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin struggled to balance history with heroism to make peace with his greatest enemy and cement a legacy long misunderstood.
